Luke Wright has revealed he feared his season had been wrecked by a back injury.

But the relieved Sussex batsman might have to sit out his club's return to Championship cricket.

Wright is being assessed today but admits there is “every chance” he will miss Derbyshire’s visit to Hove which starts tomorrow (11am).

He was absent from Vitality Blast wins over Glamorgan and Gloucestershire after hurting his back during a training session.

But he was passed fit to face Middlesex last night and scored 74 in the win which secured a last-eight place.

Wright told The Argus: “I thought I had done my disc, which I did a year-and-a-half ago.

“I thought it could be almost the season done because I couldn’t stand up.

“Luckily it was just my facet joint or something so I had an injection in it.

“To be fair to the physios, to get me back in three days considering I could barely walk up the stairs when I did it was an outstanding effort.”

Wright’s return countered the disappointment of losing Rashid Khan one game early.

But he admitted he took a calculated gamble.

He said: “It was 50-50 whether I’d play. If I’m honest, I took a punt to try and play.

“If it had been another group game and we were okay then I probably wouldn’t have played.

“But you give it a crack and you get your rewards.”

Wright’s likely absence could give Tom Haines another chance to shine.

He said: “I think there is every chance I probably won’t play but that is where we have been great all year.

“Hainsey came in and got a hundred not long ago.

“Dizzy (coach Jason Gillespie) backs people. We have got a good squad for a reason.

“I’ll be assessed (today) – if I can get out of bed!

“We’ll see where we are but there are plenty of people to step in for four-day cricket.”

Wright revaled the setback came minutes from the end of a session.

He said: “It was the last fielding drill of training.

“I went to throw it at the stumps but I crossed myself and felt the old knife down the back so I thought I was done.”
