Billy Godleman’s first Championship ton of the season made life tough for Sussex today.

Godleman made 122 as visitors Derbyshire reached 315-5 in response to Sussex’s 440 all out.

But a couple of late wickets sent Sussex back in with a spring in their step - and a lead of 125.

It was a testing day for the hosts, who are searching for a win to further boost their bid for promotion from Specsavers County Championship division two.

David Wiese was one of three morning wickets to fall for Sussex, adding four to his overnight 89 before being bowled by Lockie Ferguson.

Sussex’s bowlers then found Derbyshire hard work.

Ollie Robinson had Billy Slater caught at third slip by Phil Salt for 24 as he drove outside off stump.

Wayne Madsen made 72 and shared a second-wicket stand of 130 before cutting a wide one from Chris Jordan to Danny Briggs at point straight after tea.

Godleman survived a bad drop by Michael Burgess at point on 92 to go past three figures before he was bowled through the gate by a beauty from Luke Wells in the spinner’s first over.

Wells was the seventh bowler employed by Sussex in what seemed like a very long afternoon.

Robinson gave the hosts another lift late on with a brilliant bit of work from mid-on to run out Sean Ervine.

And, with the final ball of the day, Briggs bowled nightwatchman Hardus Viljoen, who had just lofted him for two sixes.

Alex Hughes remains 60 not out overnight.
