David Wiese would love to see Derbyshire chasing 300 to win at Hove tomorrow.

But the South African all-rounder believes 50 fewer could put Sussex on course to boost their promotion hopes with a win.

Sussex took three wickets in the final ten overs of what felt like a long second day of their Specsavers County Championship tussle at Hove against Derbyshire, for whom Billy Godleman made 122.

When Danny Briggs bowled night-watchman Hardus Viljoen with in the final over, it left Derbyshire 125 behind with five wickets remaining Sussex have the option of the new ball from the fourth over of day three.

By the close of today, they will look to be on track for a lead of at least 250 if Wiese, who scored 93 and bowled 11 overs for the hosts, has it right.

He told The Argus: “I always think more than 300 on the last day is difficult, regardless of the wicket.

“If we get our field right and our plans right and our bowling spot-on, like we can, I definitely think 250 is going to be challenging.

“There have been a couple of signs of cracks opening up a little bit and one or two stayed low when they were bowling to us.

“We have seen the ball turn once or twice.

“With foot marks there and the left-handers they have, it might play nicely into our hands.”
