Sussex coach Mark Robinson hopes the media will lay off England's new hero Luke Wright.

The 22-year-old all-rounder hit 50 off just 38 balls on his one-day international debut yesterday.

Wright, who is also in the squad for the Twenty20 World Championship later this month, smashed seven fours and a six in a stand of 106 with Owais Shah, a new sixth-wicket record in ODIs at the Oval.

But Robinson is mindful of how Matt Prior has been treated after he made a spectacular start to his Test career with a debut hundred in May.

He said: "It's great for Luke. What I'm really pleased is that he played with no fear which is what you wanted him to do. The only thing which worries me is that the media now over-hype him.

"He has a big future but I have seen how they have treated Matt Prior which has been a disgrace.

"They built him up, gave him all the coverage in the world and then knocked him to high heaven. It is imporant that they don't do that to Luke.

"People should just enjoy what he has achieved and recognise that he is still a young propsect with a lot to learn, but is someone with a great future who should be allowed to develop in his own time."

Wright was only called into the squad on Monday and Robinson said: "It definitely helped that he had so little time to prepare or think about it.

"Luke is an uncomplicated kid who has good people around him guiding him. He has a bright future but he is not the finished article."

In Wright's absence, Sussex made a good start to their key Championship tussle with Yorkshire, reaching 386-5 on day one.

The visitors wore black arm bands in memory of Jane Tomlinson, who raised £1.7 million for cancer charities before losing her battle against the disease on Monday at the age of 43.
