Chris Hughton expects a quiet January transfer window for Albion.

He hopes instead to see the Seagulls’ summer signings come more to the fore.

Around £50 million was spent on adding nine players to the squad, the majority from European clubs, during the close season.

They have made 31 Premier League appearances between them, factors including injuries, adjusting to English football and Hughton’s selection choices limiting their involvement.

Hughton said: “As soon as the summer window closes, we have a recruitment team that is already thinking about January and next season.

“But perhaps during that season sometimes circumstances change a little bit.

“If I look at our squad at the moment, we have players who have come in over the summer who haven’t played the part they would like.

“So certainly as regards any work in January, I don’t see a lot.

“But we have to work that way and identify potential areas we can strengthen and sometimes a late one comes in that you didn’t think was going to. That’s all ongoing.”

The Argus:

Only players on the outer fringes of the squad, such as Ezequiel Schelotto, pictured, and Markus Suttner, may leave.

Hughton said: “You never know, but the players we have brought in, all of their efforts are going into getting into the team as quick as they can, doing the right things, getting that opportunity whichever way it comes.

“So certainly there are no signs at this moment that we might lose somebody, apart from potential players that haven’t had perhaps the minutes that they would have liked.

“And they wouldn’t be players we have brought in in the summer.”

Albion lose reliable No.1 Mathew Ryan to international duty in January with Australia in the Asian Cup.

“We have in Jason Steele and David Button two very capable goalkeepers,” Hughton said. “We are aware that Maty is away. If we had a choice, we would prefer not, but it’s normal and we won’t be the only club who will lose players.

“When you lose players you have to adjust.

“David Button has been pushing since day one and so has Jason Steele as well and that will be their opportunity.”
