Crawley are considering adding former Arsenal striker Isaiah Rankin to their summer signing spree.

Trialist Rankin came on in the second half as Reds kicked-off their pre-season programme with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The 30-year-old free agent started his career with the Gunners and had spells at Bradford, Birmingham, Brentford and, more recently, Stevenage.

Goalkeeper Nick Morgan, a former Southend trainee, was also given a chance to impress in the second half.

Assistant boss Paul Raynor said: "We knew Isaiah was available. He played for Ebbsfleet at the weekend so we asked him to come down.

"We are just having a look at him at the moment and we will see how he does. We have not set a timescale on any of the trialists we are looking at because we want to make sure we get the right people.

"We don't have the finances to sign just anyone, they all have to be bang on."

Six of Crawley's eight summer signings were involved in the game with only Steve Fletcher and Simon Weatherstone missing after picking up minor knocks during pre-season training.

The returning Chris Giles, who was handed the captain's armband in his first game since leaving the club two years ago, and former Albion left-back Sam Rents began in the back four in front of new goalkeeper Simon Rayner.

Ex-Halifax pair Lewis Killeen and Danny Forrest started on either flank while defender Jake Wright came on early in the second half.

Palace started with an almost full-strength side including Ben Watson, Shaun Derry, Dougie Freedman and Paul Ifill.

Brighton-born Ifill gave the Championship side the lead ten minutes before half time with a neat finish after beating full-back Glenn Wilson for pace down the inside-right channel.

Watson had earlier gone close with a free kick which hit the inside of the post but the visitors did not have it all their own way in the first half.

Reds matched their illustrious opponents for most of it with some neat passing football and threatened through two shots from Jon-Paul Pittman.

Rankin came on early in the second half for last season's top scorer Jamie Cook and had a chance to make an instant impact on the hour. He muscled past young defender Billy Bingham and fired a low angled shot straight at the diving Darryl Flahaven.

Palace brought on a number of young players throughout the second half and Reds enjoyed more possession as a result.

The equaliser came on 65 minutes when Thomas Pinault slammed home from the penalty spot after Wright was fouled by substitute Keiran Djaly.

The lively Pittman almost won it for Crawley 20 minutes from time when he used his pace to beat Jose Fonte and forced a low save from Flahaven.

Raynor added: "It was a fantastic performance from the lads, we are really pleased with them. They have been working hard in training and I think it showed. To put in a performance like we did against a side like Palace is brilliant."
