James Fraser makes his Lewes debut tomorrow and will give manager Kevin Keehan a headache in the process.

The younger brother of Albion midfielder Tommy makes his bow for the Rooks in their final pre-season friendly at home to Havant and Waterlooville.

He will line-up alongside former Queens Park Rangers striker Shabazz Baidoo who has joined the club on trial.

Fraser’s arrival on loan from Bristol Rovers means Keehan will have to make some tough decisions ahead of the Blue Square premier opener at Kidderminster next weekend.

Although he can also play in attack, the teenager’s best position is in midfield and he will find himself competing with the likes of Michael Standing, Matt Geard, Joe Keehan, Ollie Rowland and Danny Davis for one of three midfield berths at the Dripping Pan.

Fraser’s capture on a month’s loan from the Pirates was announced in June and Keehan is delighted to finally have the youngster at his disposal.

Keehan said: “He is another intelligent footballer, which is what I like. Players like that can see a pass and see it early which is important to me.

“James has gone from strength to strength since going to Bristol Rovers. They recently took 18 players on tour to Sweden and James was among them.

“He will be an asset for us and his arrival will give everyone another boost, apart from the person whose place he takes!

“We have a few players to choose from in midfield and I will have to work that one out but it is a nice problem to have.”

Fraser started out at Albion’s Centre of Excellence but was not taken on as a trainee. He subsequently played for Worthing in Ryman premier, helping them to the Sussex Senior Cup final in 2007 before being snapped up on an initial short-term deal by Bristol Rovers.

That was extended until the end of the season and Fraser, who captained England Schools under-18s during his time at Worthing, has now signed a new one-year deal.

Baidoo will also make his debut against Havant. The 21-year-old striker was on Arsenal’s books as a youngster and made his debut for QPR at the age of 16. He went on to make 28 League appearances for QPR, scoring three times, before being released in January.

He immediately joined Dagenham and Redbridge but is now looking for a fresh start.

Keehan will make a decision on all of his remaining trialists in the next few days. Former Dover and Horsham YMCA goalkeeper Dean Ruddy will get another opportunity to impress against Havant although striker Tom Lyons will not play tomorrow after picking up a knock in a midweek training match.

Josh Apps, 18, is expected to be taken on after a couple of appearances in pre-season. The 18-year-old from Hastings joined Aston Villa when he left school but was plagued by injury.

Keehan said: “Josh did well when he came on against Albion and has done well since. I have quite a few decent youngsters who I wouldn’t be worried about putting in individually.

“We will be getting Josh to sign on. The good thing with our youngsters is they can play in our Pontin’s League side, which is an attraction to them. Once they do well in that they can step up.”

Keehan is close to knowing what his team will be for the opener at Kidderminster.

He said: “The whole point about friendlies is to learn about players and to make sure we get the balance right.

“I have at least eight of my team sorted out and three positions I am still thinking over.”

Lewes have announced their squad numbers for the season ahead and they give no indication as to who will play at right-wingback as Craig Richards has the No. 14 shirt and Steve Elliott No. 15.
