Hawkins aims to silence critics

Colin Hawkins is desperate to be given the nod for Albion’s return home after a double FA Cup nightmare.

The Seagulls come back to Withdean for what looks a very important League One clash with Huddersfield on Saturday after clocking up the miles to Carlisle and Hartlepool.

Hawkins has come a long way, too, since he last trod the athletics stadium turf.

The big Irish defender was booed by some South Stand fans when he was taken off on his most recent home outing, shortly after heading an own goal in the 3-3 FA Cup draw with Hartlepool.

He was left out of the next two games, then brought back for the Pools replay and was the unlucky victim of a debatable penalty verdict which sent the Seagulls spinning towards a Cup exit having led at half-time.

Hawkins has been around long enough to know that incident, unfortunate though it was, will not have won him any favours from fans who jeered him at his own home ground.

He is also honest enough to accept his performance was below par after that header past John Sullivan turned the original tie against Danny Wilson’s men on its head.

Those who were among the travelling 116 at Victoria Park will have seen a pretty solid first-half defensive display, right in front of their noses in the away end, and several blocks and headers as Hartlepool moved up through the gears after the break.

But it will take a big home performance for Hawkins, an impressive addition to the squad in the opening weeks of the season, to redeem him in the eyes of some who pay their ticket money.

And he accepts that.

The former Coventry stopper declared: “I'm desperate to play on Saturday, put in a good performance at home in front of the fans and shut them up maybe, if you like.”

He added: “On a personal note it was a nice game for me to come back in against Hartlepool. I was looking to bounce back.

“The manager left me out of the next two games and I’ve got no qualms about that.

“My performances hadn’t been good enough. I’ve been making mistakes.

“That’s why that penalty has killed me even more. Again it’s my name in the paper that’s given away the penalty and it looks a bit bad.

“But again I’m big enough to take it and I thought I did okay overall.

“I thought we looked solid, to be honest, especially in the first half.

“Things aren’t going for me at the moment but I've just got to take it on the chin, work harder in training and hopefully I’ve done enough to stay in the team.”

Hawkins insists he can shrug off the boos which greeted him as he returned to the dugout after being taken off in his last home game.

He said: “It’s not nice but I didn’t notice the fans to be honest.

“They are entitled to their opinions. I had a great first half against Hartlepool and then there was that own goal.

“I've scored two in my career and that one was ridiculous.

“I don’t know what happened. It will never happen again. It’s one of those bizarre goals.

“After the own goal I didn’t play that well so the fans are entitled to their opinion.

“I’m big enough to take that. I'm not going to hide, I'm going to work hard in training.

“I want to stay in the team, play as many games as possible and push Brighton up that table.”

headline Hawkins aims to silence his critics, do we take that at last he realises he will not make the grade at the Albion , will tear up his contract and sign for a team more to his ability namely a non league side

well at least we have him , and not a classy young defender like lynch! oh yes he is a albion player, but does not want to train with the seconds!! with "bob the pottage legend"

Hawkins got booed off by the South Stand, I have my season ticket in block E, and alot of people around me were jeering him from the start, so it seems that they are a decent judge of character afterall! Hawkins is a major let down, an horrific signing in the summer and a massive mistake to keep playing him. Elphick is obviously our best defender, but Lynch is right up there as being just as important, we need him back. Virgo looks a natural centre back to me, he's a rubbish striker and certainly not a right winger. But he tries and he cares, which is why he should be playing. But at centre back with Elphick, or right back with Lynch in the middle where he belongs.

I was disappointed in the summer when we signed Hawkins as we had in Lynch and Elphick two of the best young centre halves in the division!

The fact that with Elphick, Lynch, Virgo, El-Abd, Hinshelwood, Cook and Pearson also centre backs it is probably the most keenly fought position on the football pitch.

If Hawkins cannot make the grade then there are plenty of others at the club who can play there instead!

Hawkins isn't a right back!

I was dissapointed majorly, Elphick and Lynch are a brilliant partnership which would have been brilliant for us as a team, Hawkins is a complete mute on the pitch, Elphick needs someone to communicate with back there, which is why he played so well with Guy Butters. Lynch is a natural born, classy defender. He should be playing, but nevermind.

I was referring to Virgo at right back, not Hawkins by the way mate.

Virgs can play there too.

I agree about Lynch. I think Hawkins was signed because Adams felt we needed an experienced defender to replace Butters. However, we then signed Virgo too!

I get the feeling Hawkins and Thomson aren't the most popular Brighton players in the eyes of Brighton fans which is a shame as need to keep our best players.

The signing of Virgo seems to me to just have been because we could, not because we overly needed him. But because he was an option, and hey, everyone needs a utility bloke.

Hawkins and Thomson are the least favourite of those who actually play, I would say that's a deffinite fact. And why? Hawkins gives away a penalty every single game, and even when he doesn't it's because of a polite referee (He cut that Cheltenham player in half, why the ref saw it as a dive I just don't know, seriously. It was a shocking decision, we got so lucky!). As for Thomson, well. He doesn't tackle well, he doesn't pass well. He doesn't link play, he doesn't stop play. He can't shoot, yet to score a legitimate goal for us, and he's no good in terms of getting players in the game. He's just not very good, he played well against Man City and I thought he was effective alongside Savage at Peterborough, but all to often he's rubbish for us, and a liability. He's not the type of player we need in the midfield. I've seen 16 of our 22 matches this season, and I can honestly say that Thomson is not a very good player. I saw every home game last season, and a few away games last season too, which Thomson didn't play in actually, thinking about it. But I must have seen the guy play nearly 50 times for us, and it's safe to say, he's not good enough if we want to be competitive in this league, which we do.

strangely we all seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet regarding Hawkins and Thompson , and we cant all be wrong , neither are good enough and taking up the point someone raised about my praise of Hammond only scoring 5 goal last season yet not being there the whole season so i would have expected the 10 mark for him . Its only Johnson who has scored anything like a goalscoring midfielder should since Hammond left

Someone somewhere said that Hammond only scored from the penalty spot, not true. The header against Southend in that brilliant 3-2 win at the Withdean early last season, and then the waltzing run and finish against Swindon at the County Ground in December. He's scored a few for Colchester too, he was more important to us than people gave him credit for being.

We all know who I think is the natural replacement in terms of a goal scoring midfielder... And he's on a permanent contract too, not here for a few weeks.
