Former Eastbourne Eagles promoter Bob Brimson is giving his old club a five-figure cash injection.

But the successful media entrepreneur insists he will not be getting involved again in speedway management.

Brimson made no secret that he lost a major six-figure sum during his one season as Eagles boss in 2007.

He left the club at the end of that campaign, though he made a low-profile cash contribution to the team last term.

Now he has offered Eagles supremo Bob Dugard cash support, the sum of at least £10,000 to be split between a sponsorship deal for the club and individual backing to Davey Watt, Lewis Bridger and Cameron Woodward.

Brimson hopes other companies will follow suit and back the new-look Eagles, who are being skippered by Watt in next season’s Elite League.

He said: “I don’t ever want to be a speedway promoter again but I take my hat off to Bob Dugard and what he is trying to do.

“It is going to be a very difficult climate next year to run a business.

“He is going that extra mile to keep the speedway club going.

“Now is the time for people to step up and support him and the club.

“I’m in the fortunate position financially of being able to do that.

“I am based in London and I’m about 70 minutes away from the track but hopefully what I am doing spurs a few more on.

“If they want the club they love to survive now is the time to act.”

Watt, Bridger and Woodward are the only riders who were with Eagles under Brimson’s guidance in 2007 and will still be there next season.

All seven team members will wear the logo of Brimson’s company Propeller Media.

Although Dugard has put together a cut-price team for next season, he makes no secret of the fact he is still looking for sponsorship and investment.

He has revised the club’s break even attendance figure from 1,350 to about 1,000.

Brimson’s contribution has come as a timely boost though clearly there is room for more financial help.

The club lost about £30,000 last season, despite tracking several popular British riders and winning the Knockout Cup Brimson was very much his own man during his time in charge, with Dugard remaining in the background.

Now, more than a year on, Brimson admits that might have been a mistake.

He said: “Bob Dugard is an extraordinary businessman.

“My one regret is I didn’t start listening to him a lot sooner than I did.

“He knows what he is doing and he will cut his cloth accordingly for next season.”

Brimson has now recovered financially from the losses he incurred at Arlington and watched several meetings as a fan last season.

He said: “I don’t think you will ever see me in a promoter’s role at Eastbourne again but the good thing is I can earn money faster in my business than I could lose it running a speedway team.

“I’m more than back straight again now.”

Members of Eagles’ revamped supporters club are currently putting in the legwork, armed with a professionally produced promotional DVD, trying to bring in extra sponsorship for next season.
