Crawley boss Steve Evans believes he is on to a Shaw thing with his new recruit.

Striker Jon Shaw has joined Reds until the end of the season from League Two outfit Rochdale and should make his debut in Saturday’s FA Trophy tie against Cambridge United.

Evans has long been a fan of the 25-year-old who swells the contingent of former Halifax players at the club to five.

Evans said: “I have admired Jon for some time. He’s a clinical finisher, has exceptional pace, good movement and a goalscoring record at this level.

“As soon as I spoke to Jon he wanted to come to us and he already has a number of good mates in our squad which was a factor in his decision.

“We’re fortunate to get him because a number of clubs were chasing his signature. I’m delighted to sign him and I know our fans will love him.”

Shaw hit 21 goals for the Shaymen last season – including three against Crawley – to earn his move to Spotland but hamstring and ankle injuries this season have restricted him to just five starts although he did figure in three of Dale’s last four games.

Shaw, who has played for the England non-league team, began his career with Sheffield Wednesday before spells with York City and Burton, for whom he scored two goals against Reds in 2005.

Meanwhile Woking chairman David Taylor has slammed Evans for making public details of Reds’ failed bid to land midfielder Matt Pattinson.

Evans had a £5,000 offer rejected on Monday – a bid Taylor described as “insulting”.

He said: “I wouldn’t even consider it an offer quite frankly, it’s an insult.

“If Crawley think that Matt Pattison is worth £5,000 then we need look at their assessment of players’ values.

“Steve Evans spoke to our manager (Phil Gilchrist) and it was agreed that the conversation would stay private but Steve Evans chose to make that public.”

Evans described Woking’s asking price for the 24-year-old as “ludicrous”.

He added: “They are entitled to value him at what they say fit but we thought we made a good offer considering he is out of contract in the summer.”

Crawley’s Setanta Shield quarter-final against Chelmsford last night was postponed because of a frozen pitch.
