A dreadful mistake from Rikki Banks cost Lewes dear as they crashed out of the FA Trophy 4-3 in a second round replay away to Havant and Waterlooville.

Banks made a real mess of a routine clearance 12 minutes from time just after Lewes had clawed their way back on to level terms after trailing 3-1 at half-time.

Defeat meant Lewes missed out on a £6,000 prize fund for winning this tie as well as a money-spinning third round clash at home to Crawley Town.

Manager Kevin Keehan made two changes to the team that lost 3-0 away to York City on Saturday with Josh Klein-Davies absent and Seb Wallis-Tayler dropping to the bench.

David Wheeler returned to the line-up after passing a pre-match fitness test on the hamstring strain which ruled him out at York and fellow teenager Grant Hall came in at right-back.

Hall's only previous start for the first team was a Sussex Senior Cup tie at Selsey in November.

It took Havant only six minutes to go ahead, punishing the Lewes defence for some slack marking as Paul Booth crossed for Matt Gray to fire home a half-volley.

Lewes had failed to get a single shot on target in 90 minutes on Saturday. They managed one after 13 minutes here but Elliott Charles' low strike was a comfortable take for goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore.

Banks made a good save low down from Brett Poate on 17 minutes and 60 seconds later Craig Watkins was inches from connecting with a delightful through ball from Booth.

Fred Foreman responded with a terrific free-kick which was tipped over the bar by Ashmore at full stretch on 27 minutes and two minutes later the youngster fired over another chance after being played in by Wheeler.

Lewes were level on the half-hour mark in controversial circumstances as Kieron St Aimie appeared to push Ian Simpemba before running on to slot home.

Havant were incensed but two goals in quick succession put them in the driving seat. First Steven Walker beat Banks with a 25-yard strike in the 34th-minute, then Simpemba was given time to control the ball and fire home from inside the six-yard box two minutes later.

Lewes had a double let-off in the early stages of the second half as Rikki Banks escaped with a yellow card after bringing down Booth outside his area, then Booth's strike from the resulting free-kick was disallowed as a team-mate was in an offside position.

The Rooks looked out of it but they were given a lifeline in the 60th minute when Foreman calmly slotted home his first senior goal after being released by Joe Keehan's astute pass.

Keehan was desperately unlucky not to square things up on 66 minutes with a terrific 20-yard volley which was met by an equally impressive save from Ashmore at the expense of a corner.

The game was now opening up and Booth should have made it 4-2 when he shot wide after going round Banks.

The Rooks responded with St Aimie cracking a shot after the near post with Ashmore beaten and they were level 17 minutes from time when Chris Breach's shot was well saved by Ashmore only for a defender to hit the rebound into his own net.

However, Lewes pressed the self-destruct button in the 78th minute when Banks dallied over a clearance, then kicked it straight at Booth who was able to walk the ball into an empty net.

The Rooks' misery was complete four minutes from time when Andy Pearson was shown a straight red card for a foul on Walker which warranted a booking at most.
