Striker Jon Shaw is convinced he can fire Crawley’s bid for honours after breaking his duck for the club.

Shaw, who is on loan from League Two Rochdale until the end of the season, grabbed a precious injury-time equaliser as Reds fought back from 4-2 down to draw 4-4 at Ebbsfleet on Tuesday.

And he is in line to make his first start tomorrow when Reds go to Havant and Waterlooville looking for a place in the last eight of the FA Trophy.

Shaw is likely to replace the cup-tied Robbie Matthews and is desperate to show what he can offer after a frustrating start to his Crawley career.

The 25-year-old joined Reds on January 6 but suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury on his first day of training.

He missed three games before making his first appearance as a second-half substitute against Oxford last Saturday.

Shaw was thrown on just five minutes into the second half against Ebbsfleet and set up Reds’ third goal for Jon-Paul Pittman before showing great alertness in the six-yard box to rescue a point.

Shaw said: “I came down and got injured straight away which was very frustrating and it’s been a long battle to get fit.

“I’d had a stop-start season and didn’t achieve what I wanted to at Rochdale after a great start so I wanted to score a lot of goals for Crawley and show Rochdale I was worthy of a future up there.

“I have done a lot of work on my fitness and I feel fine now and I’m looking to start as many games as I can. The reason I came here is to do well in the cups and help get Crawley in the play-offs. I didn’t come here for a mid-table battle.”

Shaw is one of five former Halifax players in the squad, although the day when they get their wish to play in the same side is some way off.

Lewis Killeen and Danny Forrest are struggling with injury while Jake Wright – whose cross led to Shaw’s goal – is facing a suspension after collecting his fifth yellow card on Tuesday.

“By the end of the season it would be great for all the Halifax boys to play together,” said Shaw. “It would be good for us and as a team because when everyone is fit here I think we will be a hard side to play against.”

Shaw’s Conference goalscoring record of 46 in 114 appearances for Burton and Halifax is the reason Steve Evans brought him to the club and he will need to maintain that sort of form just to win a private battle among his former Shay team-mates to be top scorer.

Defender Adam Quinn’s strike against Ebbsfleet was his ninth of the campaign while Killeen (four) has made a contribution despite being restricted to 14 starts because of injury.

Shaw said: “I joked with Quinny when I got here that I’d soon catch him up but then he told me he had eight goals already and he got another on Tuesday!

“I’ve known Quinny for years and I’ve always said he should score more because he is a real handful in both boxes and this year he’s finally proving me right.

“Let’s hope he can get 15 and I can get close to him because if that happens we will be in the play-offs and, who knows, looking at going to Wembley.”

Tomorrow’s clash will be the third cup meeting between the sides and although Reds knocked Havant out of the Setanta Shield it was not much consolation after they had been dumped out of the FA Cup a fortnight earlier, losing 3-0 at Broadfield Stadium.

Assistant manager Paul Rayner says his players have not forgotten Havant’s exuberant celebrations that day and believes they will need little motivation at Westleigh Park.

“We will be going into the lion’s den at Havant,” said Rayner. “But the boys will be fired up for that game although we will need to be a lot better defensively to make sure there are no problems.”

Reds’ selection problems continue with Matthews cup-tied and Chris Giles, Thomas Pinault and Isaiah Rankin all out but Jamie Cook and Killeen are close to a return and could be on the bench.
