Former Seagull backs bid to sign striker

Albion's bid to buy towering striker Liam Dickinson has been backed by a former Seagull who watched him hit the target regularly last season.

Dickinson’s agent has revealed Albion are close to agreeing a fee with Championship side Derby and that the player is keen on a move south.

That will enhance the chances of Russell Slade’s side making an impact this season, according to Kieran O’Regan.

The ex-Albion midfielder is a BBC Radio Leeds pundit for Huddersfield, where the 6ft 4ins Dickinson bagged six goals in 13 games on loan last season before further temporary spells with Blackpool and Leeds.

O’Regan said: “I can’t knock him. He did really well for Huddersfield. He is not the most stylish of players, very ungainly, but his record speaks for itself.

“He is a very confident lad. He takes free-kicks and he works extremely hard, closing people down and chasing lost causes to put teams under pressure.

“Everywhere he has been, apart from Derby, he seems to score goals. He probably went there at a bad time, when Paul Jewell was under pressure and it was an unhappy club. I think League One is his level and I think he is decent at it.”

Dickinson joined Derby a year ago for £750,000 after 33 goals in 94 league appearances for Stockport.

He is yet to make his debut and is well down the pecking order at Pride Park now that Nigel Clough is in charge.

Dickinson’s agent, Phil Sproson, said: “There is a strong interest from Brighton in Liam and talks are ongoing.

“The two clubs are trying to agree a fee and I don’t think they are too far apart.

“Liam wants to be playing regular first team football and he knows his chances at Derby will be limited, so he is hoping a deal can be agreed with Brighton.”

Norwich have already failed with two bids for Dickinson and familiarity aids Albion’s cause, given that his former Stockport team-mates James Tunnicliffe, Gary Dicker and Jim McNulty have all switched to the Seagulls in recent months.

Yes Dickinson would be a good buy for the Albion, 82 league games played and 45 goals scored. Let's not count our chickens before there hatched though, he hasn't signed for us yet.

well another quality player coming in, any news of any non league clubs looking at elabd? i hear most of the " local" lads are heading to whitehawk and bognor, how on earth did the club stay in this division with so many poor players in the squad.. give adams 6 months and he will be sacked. with 5 more players to come in, will the club have one youth pruduct in the starting 11?

I fully expect one of Virgo, Elphick and Cox to be in the starting line-up. As for the others, why can't you let them go? They have left the club and moved on. So have the club and the majority of fans.
We should be focussing on what could be a very exciting future at the Albion and not the past.

Absolutely right Big Fan. Mark 62's info has generally been accurate but we have to look forward and let the past go. Would have been fantastic to watch a successful Albion side crammed with 'local product'but regretfully it hasn't happened for one reason or another .
RS seems to be quietly putting together a quality/experienced out-fit and I hope he has time to complete the side in time for it to gel in the League.
Trying hard not to let my hopes/ expectations for next season get to high but am increasingly hopeful of watching a side that is competitive in the top ten and a play off candidate.

absolutely agree 100% with you, but to be a championship side we will need the youth system producing players with the potential to play premiership football, however i under stand the best centre back partnership is tunni and lynch! if our left back starts the first game, be interesting line up, for once we will have lots of good players fighting for a start, thats the only way forward if we want out of this league, cant wait for season to start!!

So that would be tunni who you have probably never seen play and Lynch who doesn't want to play for us. Contrary little tinker aren't you.

He's going to be a good player, but whats the point? They already have Fozzy, Murry, Hart and Davis. Maby try and sell Davis, then buy Dickinson?

I have been known to throw in a couple of curve balls occasionally, but you will also remember i announced the signing of Graeme Smith on this blog before the club did!! As i have with other players over the past two years! As such you may want to listen to some of my bull spout, as there is usually some substance to it. By the way personal terms are not an issue with Dickinson, he is ready to sign, it's Derby holding things us trying to recoup their cash.
