Lewes boss Steve Ibbitson had no complaints after his side lost 2-1 at home to Maidenhead United.

A Rooks side packed with teenagers are still looking for their first win of the season in Blue Square south after a hugely disappointing second-half display.

They led at half-time through David Wheeler, having also missed a penalty early on and had another strong penalty appeal turned down.

Ibbitson said: “We played really well in the first half and they were struggling to cope with us but in the second half we were very poor.

“We started banging it long which made it easy for their 6ft 5in centre back.

“We just weren’t brave enough. I don’t mean brave enough about crashing into tackles but being brave wanting the ball in certain areas.”

Scott Chamberlain missed from the penalty spot after Ryan Storrie was flattened but David Wheeler put Lewes ahead on 27 minutes.

Wheeler was then denied what looked a clear penalty and Lewes faded in the second half when goals from former Rooks loanee Kieron St Aimie and Sam Collins gave the visitors victory.

Lewes gave a second-half debut to 19-year-old striker Ryan Hirooka, who has signed from Portuguese second division football having previously been with Eastbourne Borough and Brentford. Teenage Grant Hall did not play as he was having another run-out for Albion’s under-18s.

Lewes: Banks; Barness, Pearson (sub Peauroux), Breach, Sutton; Royce, Keehan, Wheeler, Chamberlain (sub Hirooka), Storrie; Foreman (sub Pople). Subs not used: Manning, Hopkinson.
