Albion sack Slade

Albion have sacked manager Russell Slade after just eight months in charge.

The Albion manager was relieved of his duties today, following the 3-3 draw with Hartlepool United at Withdean yesterday. Assistant manager Dean White and first-team coach Bob Booker are also leaving the club.

Martin Hinshelwood will takeover as caretaker manager, assisted by Steve Brown and Charlie Oatway.

Chairman Tony Bloom said: "It is not a decision we have taken lightly and one taken with a heavy heart.

"Russell is a good man - which made it an even harder decision to take - but it is one which has been made in the club's best interests.

"Like all Albion fans, I am extremely grateful for Russell's achievements at the end of last season, as he kept us in League One against the odds." Slade was appointed in March on a contract until the end of the season and was rewarded with a two-year deal after ensuring the club avoided relegation. However, Albion are hovering just one place above the drop zone.

Slade added, "I am extremely sad that things have not worked out - but we have parted on good terms.

"I felt we were progressing through a much-needed and vital rebuilding process; that was never going to be easy with the large turnover of players during the close season.

"Whoever the club appoints will inherit a squad with enormous potential and an extremely supportive fan base. The supporters have been first class throughout my time here - and I would like to place on record my thanks to them.

"I'd also like to thank those staff and players, who worked so hard for me during the past eight months, and of course Dick Knight for giving me the opportunity to manage the club in the first place."

Bloom added, "Dean and Bob have both played a huge part in the club's history, not least in the three most-recent promotion successes. I would like to thanks them for their commitment over the past nine years."

That’s a real shame. He was a good manager and definitely the person for the job. He made the team better and was desperately unlucky with injuries to key players. Other players were not performing and this has reflected poorly on him. Good luck Russell.

i agree johnboy. but sadly the case for the defence was lacking... nicky forster excepted, the rest of the players should be ashamed they have got a good manager the sack. may i suggest to any new coach he waits until the games against soton, leeds and norwich are out of the way before agreeing to take over?

"Good manager"? He could not decide on a centre-back pairing, goal-keeper or midfield. Failed to condemn ill discipline. Any club action taken against those sent off? He may be a good man, but way out of his depth. TB is to be congratulated for trying to retain the respect of the club which has been going into decline.

I think it’s a sad day for Brighton. When will these plums in charge realise we are not a world beating team and a small fish in a massive pond. We have no home (well yet anyway) only a silly little athletics track and have won very little over the last few years.

What players would want to come to us as we are? We need to settle down and allow a manager to build for when the ground is done without worrying if he loses his job.
The players we did manage to get have no heart in the club. Most are away from there families and want to train, play the games and get back home where ever that may be to see them. Most spend their time travelling back and fourth.

As for saying the players are lacking confidence etc. Pay me there wages and ill show you what ever you want. Its about time these pretty boys took a long hard look at themselves. They aint players they are along for a ride. There are players out there who would give their right arm to play and give more and play for free given the chance. I would loose every week but show some heart doing it.
The players are to blame not just the manager. Gutless bunch, most of them, should be ashamed of themselves today. Think of those that have been sacked and their families at home whom bread winner is out of a job now. Well done boys. Big boy Charlie’s comes to mind.

I am ashamed to be a fan.

Nice guy he may be but his wins per games played record before he came to the Albion was, I believe, 37% and with the Albion only 29%. Not good enough to be considered a success. If Tony Bloom wants to move the Club forward he has to start by appointing a Manager with successful record. I just hope that it won't be a case of going for second best again.

Well about time , nice guy he may be but TB is obviously looking like the rest of us to the league table. We have played 15 games a total of a possible 45 points , and we have 14 , less than a third. So how could RS be a good manager judged on these stats he is so fond of using. He did well last season , but a lot of that was down to LLOYD OSWUSU and his goals. Without Owusu we are finding it hard to score if NF fails to. Could RS not see the success we had a couple of seasons back when Elphick won player award was when he was being coached by Butters as they played. We need an experienced centre half to take charge of the tossers we have playing at present.

Not disappointed to see the departure of Russell Slade. With the imminent departure of Phil Brown at Hull City I would personally like to see the return of his assistant Brian Horton to The Withdean. "Nobby" never really had much of a chance managing through the Priestfield period.

Very sad day. I know things have been bad on the pitch. I sat through the Oldham game. Had Russell been able to use his own coaching staff from the off i am sure things would have been different.
I also think that the players should be ashamed of themselves. The buck stops with the boss, we all know that, but i was shocked last week by the lack of effort from some of the players. There was no heart there.
So sorry Russell. True fans know that you did your best and good luck in the future.

Another thought, I hope the players are ashamed of themselves tonight, with a few exceptions, such as Bennet, Dicker and Forster they have been very poor. Slade certainly didn't tell them to defend the way they have been, even White and Booker wouldn't have.

It will be P45's all round next summer if they don't knuckle down, think how lucky they are being paid to play football and start repaying their chairman and the fans with some skill and passion.

When the new coaches arrive they had better listen to them and apply themselves properly.

Quote of the century

Don't you just love it?

Brighton & Hove Albion:
Played 15 - won 3
Goals For 18 - Goals against 23
Position 5th from bottom - (which would have been 4th from bottom if Southampton hadn't started on minus 10 points)

and what does the parting manager say?

"I felt we were progressing through a much-needed and vital rebuilding process"

That's worth repeating

"I felt we were progressing through a much-needed and vital rebuilding process"

Jolly Good, Russell - Jolly Good!

Mixed emotions - Russell is a top bloke but just not up to the job defensively. However, he's been extremely unlucky with injuries to the full backs. He worked overtime all summer to try and build the Albion a decent squad while getting rid of most of our dead wood. Good luck Russell.
Micky Adams has proved that you shouldn't go back therefore that should rule out Coppell and Taylor. How about Garath Southgate who's got a house in Crawley and has showed great loyalty to Middlesborough? I'm sure TB will make the correct 'punt' as gambling is his forte!

Would it be third time lucky. Mullery failed, Adams failed, would Coppell fail. I remember his parting words as he set off for Reading, "Not an easy decision, I feel very comfortable here" I think we all felt very comfortable with him as Manager as did the players and executive management. He is a good honest man and a tremendous coach, I for one would be delighted if he returned.

We can but hope, but equally we can but dread the possibility of Dennis Wise.

Expect an appointment very soon as this was not a spontaneous decision, the Chairman does not work that way. The decision was taken now to give the maximum possible time between league games to allow Slade's successor to hit the ground running. There is an unbelievable schedule of matches to come and immediate impact is imperative.

We need someone of proven ability who knows the lower leagues, able to bring in their own coaching team to get these players physically and mentally fir and able to work the system.

It is a shame for Slade, Booker and White but it was obvious that in spite of some, on paper, good signings they were completely unable to get them to perform. Don't blame the players for getting the Manager sacked, if they are allowed a cushy life they will take a cushy life. It is the nature of the beast, they are performers and all performers need directing.

One can only assume that RS was happy with Booker n White as he kept them which was a fatal error and has lost him a super job!! Might be lucky under Coppell (or Southgate) especially as the new ground is not that far away and Steve will be pleased to see that side of things but it still might be too early for him yet. Steve Cotterill was one of my suggestions before RS was appointed and I still think he would do a good job for the Albion but he must have a good experienced side-kick with him as must any new manager. Lets hope that TB has someone good in line as this has been coming for a few weeks.

can't say i'm surprised, but what about sacking the players who let the team down. i realise the manager makes the decisions on who plays, but those picked have to go out and give their best, something that many haven't done, apparently. don't want coppell back, or barnes. i don't think horton will return either, as we couldn't pay as much as hull. TB needs to appoint someone who he can trust to get things moving forward. we don't want or need another 8 month wonder. don't forget, both ferguson and wenger were given time, which any manager needs. the fans need to be patient, as arsenal and man utd fans were when things went wrong. i also beleive that any new manager should be given a transfer budget for january, as new blood is needed. under-performing players need to look at themselves very carefully, and decide to get on or get out.

Tony Bloom should be congratulated for protecting our club. RS is a very decent man and a good manager. DW and BB are decent men but very poor, underqualified coaches. RS should have got rid of the pair of them during the summer. Had he done so i think he would still be the manager. Whoever comes in will have a very decent squad to work with, as long as they bring in some qualified and talented coaches. There are many names who will be mentioned over the coming weeks, Southgate, Coppell, Sherwood, Forster, but for me the most important appointments will be the No.2 and the 1st team coach. This is good news for the club, keep the faith and watch us climb the table!!

Some one has said above we are a small fish in a big pond but TB obviously recognizes this & has the guts, insight & indeed money to address the issues. Saying a team of professional players take time to gel is twaddle. as steve claridge said in an interview, they are professionals. you get your head down and get on with it. they certainly dont need that long to gel.

Excellent post (though I afford perhaps more sympathy to RS who suffered terrible luck with availability of personnel esp FBs).

He seems a top fella and probably will succeed in the future....the very best of luck to him...a gentleman, who was honest, articulate and appeared to genuinely like our club.

It's a great shame it hadn't been working out so far and some may say he should've had longer til an experienced CB could be hired and other players return to fitness but the decision has been made and I for one implore TB to do everything in his power and then some, to recruit the only man I feel could be immune to the 'never-go-back curse', who has some unfinished business to finish with us (esp with our new Stadium Of Bright development a real factor) and who by happy chance is available this time around....it can only be......STEVE COPPELL.

Gannon would not be happy on the south coast- haven't we experienced that with another from the North this season? Steve Coppell actually had an affinity for Brighton, is intelligent, a proven coach and NOT WORKING! He could do the job and take the club forward. It is regressive to look for some one who 'knows the lower divisions' as we did with RS. Leeds, Huddersfield, Norwich and Southampton have all appointed managers with higher league experience, and enjoyed the benefits.

Several weeks ago an article was written about Wise being at a game and it was only because he was friends with Bloom. Absolute rubbish. Wise I am sure and almost could bet my house and everything on it will be the next Brighton Manager with Gus Poyet as number 2. Personally I am not keen on Wise, however the players who should be disgusted at themselves will get there backsides kicked as the style of Dennis Wise I would guess is not cuddles and arms around shoulders but using a boot up the backside!!

I agree with many posters that it is a sad day for the club with Slade but from what I heard there had been quite a few backroom debates and opinions flying round and all was not what it seemed as some players also were voicing concerns at the way the club was being managed.

Anyhow here we go again and my money will be going on Wise and Poyet! Cheers

Captain Haddock says...

And whatever we do, don't appoint Dennis Wise!

Coppell seems the overwhelmingly popular vote, Wise the overwhelmingly UNpopular one!

I'm sure whoever does get the gig will pick people they have worked with and are comfortable with as their backroom team, but if they're open to suggestions, perhaps the aforementioned Jim Gannon might be a good bet for the coaching role (that after all is what he's renowned for).

Very sad day indeed. Russ was a top guy, genuine and committed to the club. Some of those players are an absolute disgrace with the performances they have put in so far this season. Their lack-lustre efforts devoid of passion, are the reason that the team are where they are at present and it is them who have brought the manager down and he does not deserve it. His one fault is perhaps being a little too nice and non confrontational. I hope the new manager with his new coaching staff will have no hesitation in kicking some of those players arses and get them earning the money they take every week win or lose!! Well the inevitable has taken place, and common sense prevailed.
RS, the too nice a guy, the too nice being his ultimate downfall, will manage elsewhere, and probably be successful, wherever that is, I wish him well. The consequences of persisting with backroom staff who are of a very poor standard, has finally taken it's toll. Despite some comments to the contrary, Albion are a big club with huge intentions for the future. We are not a small fish in a big pond, those days are gone, the final dregs of the past left with DW and BB. However difficult it is for some to accept, the club have now removed the final hurdle standing in their way of progressing onwards and upwards.
The timing of today's action is perfect. There is a fortnight before the next league match, and in that time I am certain that the Chairman will have made the moves to install replacements for those departing at this time. There is no way that Tony Bloom would have moved now without having a definite idea of his next man.
Good Luck to him and the club, we should all be grateful he has acted when and how he did.

I think he's been kicked out too soon. I hate to see managers sacked so quickly. Chairmen seem to have seriously twitchy trigger fingers these days.

Oh well at least DW and BB have been dismissed. I would have been horrified if RS had gone and they had stayed.

On the new management team, I like many posters hope that they are qualified coaches. The last thing we want is jobs for the boys (in reference to TB's supposed link to Wise). I would doubt it though, as TB seems a bit smarter than that.

I am glad the chairman has got rid of Dean White and Bob Booker because we need a fresh start and we keep on with new managers but same backroom staff. On that note I think Hinshelwood should go too. After the report in the Argus on oct 22nd Les rodgers and martin Hinshelwood signed Jake Caskey without seeing him play ,beggers belief. Do you think Sir Alex would have that happen?. We need a fresh and more profesional approuch.

I would like to say this: Wake up and smell the coffee, Andy Naylor. Tell it like it is in your "journalism". Please, with the next manager, don't get so friendly with him. By being close and friendly with Russel Slade and Micky Adams you got some decent human interest stories but when it came to being objective and being critical (when necessary) you failed us supporters and Argus readers terribly. Stay close but not too close.
On RS, he was evidently a nice bloke but also evidently not up to it. So he had to go. And what is wrong with Dennis Wise as a replacement? He has a proven track record, played at the highest level, has good contacts and looking at his previous teams would provide much needed discipline. Yes, Wise is a complete and utter prat - but he is a good, proven manager.

Might be difficult considering Poyet has said he'll never work with Wise again. Wise-the man Bobby Robson 'could never forgiveWise for what he did to my club' (NUFC). Dennis Wise? No thanks-horrible little man that would make all Brighton taxi drivers very nervous.

Russell-thanks for the effort and sorry it didn't work out. You tried your best but your players let you down. I hope some of them are now looking at their performances that have got The Albion into yet another bottom of the table mess.

Whoever TB is planning on bringing in, please make it quick because many of us remember the last time Hinshlewood was manager. Nurse, where's my Valium?

I was sorry to see RS go in one way but as l said a week ago he is too much of a 'Mr. Nice Guy'. As far as White and Booker are concerned be interesting to see how quickly they get new jobs! I am not one who thinks bringing back a previous manager is a good thing so Lennie Lawrence would be a good choice perhaps with Gus Poyet but not Dennis Wise please. Whoever Mr. Bloom decides on it has to be someone who won't take fools lightly and will ruffle a few players feathers. On paper we have a decent team who have totally underperformed as a collective unit, yes we have injuries but so do other teams, yes we have had too many players sent off which doesn't help. It needs a manager and coach with a proven track record so Mr. Bloom please take your time and get BHA the right people.

Quote:
"He inherited a situation where Bob Booker and Dean White were in the wrong roles, and a chief scout (Barry Lloyd) he didn't trust" Why wasn't Slade given the opportunity to address this a few matches ago. It's been apparent all season, there is something wrong behind the scenes. Good luck Russel

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley as a character reference. Brighton Taxi drivers in fear of this thug getting their cab from a nightclub session. Albion end 2010/12 season at Falmer in administration....TB if this guy is a friend, please keep to the old adage. Never employ a friend in business.....It could be one of your biggest gambles ever.

Sorry about Slade, but so happy that the muppet show has left. Cannot for the life of me understand why TB has not got rid of Hinslewood as well. He (as DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL ha ha) has overseen so much undiluted rubbish during his tenure and was presumably, in his role, instrumental in the appointment of all those failed managers. OK there are exceptions, but any other business would have got rid ages ago. Time you make your mark Tony. Stick Charlie in charge until you can get a new manager who can bring his own people in, not those chosen for him. 'nuff said.

It goes without saying all Brighton fans are hugely thankful to Russell Slade for saving us from the wailing and gnashing darkness of League Two at the end of last season. Given the degree of euphoria surrounding that Great Escape back in May it would have taken uncanny, crystal- ball insight on the Boards part not to have offered him the job full-time.
Sad to say it clearly wasn't happening this season. The stats tell it all: three wins, relegation zone, six reds and getting on for thirty goals in the back of our net.
Still, all the very best to Big Rus. Seemed like a Top bloke.
So, new Bloom sweeps clean. . .
Not 100% sure about Coppell. (Never go back. Again?) and like many posters on here I wouldn't feel all that comfortable with the Poison Dwarf in charge.
Still, we fans can only speculate and put our trust in TB's decision.

Steve's postmatch interview immediately after the play-off semi defeat on BBC Berks in May had me concerned for his mental health! He really sounded like he'd had enough of the whole football thing. However, if he does come back into management I suspect he'll be back at RFC. Sir Mad didn't want him to go in the first place, neither did most of the fans. Given that it's reported that Rodgers has one game left to save his job, I suspect Sir JM has already got Steve lined up for a quick return, which I think I'd be happy with - despite the "never go back" warnings that some posters here are saying. Trouble with Coppell is he's great when everything's going well, but soon runs out of ideas when it starts going wrong (eg the 8 straight defeats in spring last year), and is too peristent with a losing side.

I can't see your new chairman appointing an unpopular choice (ie Wise) as he himself has something to prove, and he needs to avoid the likes of Dowie. I've seen Curbishley's name mentioned too, but he's only ever going to go to a Prem or top 6 Championship side. If you want experience, George Graham out of retirement maybe?

I think you'll probably get an up & coming manager, rather than the more experienced type: maybe the likes of Tisdale at Exeter (being spoken of very highly), or if the press are to be believed, how about Darren Ferguson - reportedly on his last chance at Peterborough? I hear Steve Cotterill's name being mentioned too - good choice if he gets it.

I now Christmas is around the corner, but some peoples wish lists are rather extravagant. Just to put the record straight. 3 people are saying get Jim Gannon. He is the manager now of SPL Motherwell. Someone mentioned Ian Holloway. He's the reason championship Blackpool are flying. Dean Wilkins is assitant manager at Soton, so why?. I love this club like everyone else, but let's be realistic, we may see the potential, but right now we play in a ramshackle athletics stadium and are 4th bottom of league one...... so forget Gareth Southgate. I would love to get a top manager, but we are not the most attractive propostion. Who mentioned Lennie Lawrence? should we get in Big Ron to coach? One Person I would have back is Liam Brady, tones of experience and connections and not a manager.

midsussexfred says...

We must remember that going back to places like stockport and yeovil to buy players is not moving our club forward, these players were playing for teams that were not much better off than us last term.
When we have a slightly bigger named manager in charge thats when we will attract the better players, players that have the ability to move the team forward.
slade was unlucky but, booker and white are not and have never been quailty coahing staff along with lloyd who is not a quailty scout.
