Hunt to find Albion's new boss

Albion chairman Tony Bloom has drawn up a shortlist of candidates to become manager after sacking Russell Slade.

Dennis Wise and Gareth Southgate are thought to be among the favourites as the hunt begins for the Seagulls’ fifth boss in three years.

The new man may not be in place for Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Wycombe Wanderers, so former boss Martin Hinshelwood could take the team at Adams Park.

Who should be the next manager of Brighton and Hove Albion?

Gareth Southgate:

Steve Coppell:
Purple bar used for ballot results 54%

Iain Dowie:
Green bar used for ballot results 3%

Alan Curbishley:

Hinshelwood, now director of football, has been handed caretaker charge, with youth coach Steve Brown and ex-captain Charlie Oatway as his assistants, after Slade, his No. 2 Dean White and Bob Booker were all axed in the wake of Saturday’s 3-3 home draw against Hartlepool.

Bloom revealed: “We have got some people in mind, that is all at this stage. I am pretty open minded right now.

“It’s an absolutely critical decision and, although we want to do it as quickly as possible, by far the most important thing is to get the right person in.

“We are working hard to secure the right manager for the club. We cannot put a timescale on it. We may have a manager in by Saturday, we may not, we really do have no idea.

“Martin, with Steve and Charlie assisting him, is taking training on Monday and the first thing they are doing is preparing for the Wycombe game.

“They have got to work as if they are going to be there and if anything changes beforehand then so be it.”

Former Leeds chief and Newcastle director of football Wise has been linked with the post before.

He is a good friend of Albion’s managing director Ken Brown after they worked together at Millwall.

Southgate, brought up in Crawley, was sacked last month by Middlesbrough. He is also believed to be the type of manager wanted by the Albion Board to lead the club into their new Falmer stadium the season after next.

Other names likely to be discussed include ex-Albion manager Steve Coppell, the club’s former midfielder Alan Curbishley and Iain Dowie.

The decision to dismiss Slade was taken during an emergency Board meeting following Saturday’s result, which left Albion just outside the League One relegation zone.

Bloom said: “It was a very tough decision and a decision we haven’t made lightly. Russell worked really hard to make it work and try to turn things around.

“We are desperate to be in the Championship by the time we get to Falmer. We haven’t yet written off this season for that, although it is obviously looking very tough.

“We have got to think in our own minds, have we got the right people, the right set-up to do that? We are looking at the longer term future, who could get us there, who could keep us there and push us on, and we decided to change things.

It’s not on one game, it’s on everything; results, performances, certain aspects of everything, there is not one thing.”

Sacking the long-serving White and Booker as well is a departure from the policy of former chairman Dick Knight, who normally retained the backroom staff when appointing a new manager.

Bloom said: “This allows us a clean slate to find a manager who can then choose who he believes are the right people to assist him in reaching our goals”.

We decided that was the right thing to do, because it can sometimes be difficult for a new person to come in and not have that flexibility.”

Jake Wright resumes training today after ankle trouble and loan signings Gavin Hoyte and Matt Thornhill are both available for Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Wycombe Wanderers.

Albion are waiting for permission to play Thornhill’s Nottingham Forest team-mate Arron Davies.

Gareth Southgate stands out. He is young enough, has great integrity, has played the game at the highest level and knows what it takes to build and sustain performance. Above all he would be willing to settle in the area. He is THE long term choice to build the Albion. Dean Saunders is VERY welsh and perfectly happy in his job at Wrexham.

If the management position goes to either John Barnes, Southgate or Wise, we might as well sell the Falmer site to accomodate an even larger Matalan

Ex-premier league footballers don't generally make good lower league managers.

Who cares if the manager 'knows' the lower leagues!
Tony Bloom wants a manager to take us forward and gain promotion before we get to Falmer.
Russell Slade made some excellent signings who will be first team players when we get to the Championship. I'd like to see someone managing who is Capello like in his professionalism but who understands the English League structure and can find us some outstanding players who will take us forward.

It's got to be Southgate or Curbs. Coppell and Taylor have already shown their cards and left us - and we'll also get our fingers burnt again like Adams. I really hope Barnes and Wise are non-starters, however Dowie could be an outside bet.

Please - definitely NOT: Wise (only good for starting fights, usually when he's certain to win - taxi drivers, catering staff etc), Barnes (children's presenter in disguise) or Southgate (a Hove boy he may be, but a winner? I think not).

Dear Mr Bloom.

DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER APPOINTING DENNIS WISE. I, like a lot of Albion fans would find it hard to stomach and I for one would find it very hard to follow the Albion with him in charge. He is a vulgar little character who as a player gave and took some stick but as a manager he is a disgrace. A manager is representing a football club and I don’t want someone like him representing the Albion. Bobby Robsons only footballing regret was Wise signing players for his club Newcastle, which says it all.

Coppell – Yes, yes, yes. The best manager Albion have had for 20 years easily.
Curbishley – If Coppell said no, although you’d probably hear ‘come on Charlton from the dug out’.
Nicky Forster – needs to be kept on at the club but if not as manager then number 2 to either Coppell or Curbishely
Southgate – he is not experienced enough and is not a winner (misses penalties gets relegated as a manager)

Everybody else mentioned are a no. I’d rather plump for a young lower league manager than Taylor or Dowie.

Also can Hinshelwood please lave the Albion too. Playing youth football in Sussex it was clear how useless he was and how it was about who you know to get into the Albions school of excellence. HE’S THE REASON WE PAY ADAM EL-ABD THOUSANDS A WEEK!!!!

Get this appointment right Mr Bloom.

Sorry to see you go Russell as you were a genuine footballing and and I would have liked to have seen you put things right (one win we’re in mid table?!). Thanks for saving us last year. Albion legend.

I feel so sorry for Russell. He was dragged down by two huge weights around his neck and going by the past managers that we have had i can on assume that he like all others had to keep those two on.
I hope its not Barnes. Hes about as much use as an ash tray on a motorbike. We need someone who is strong. Curbs is the best choice for me along with Coppell. I dont think anyone should show any animosity towards coppell for leaving when he did. I really believe that he was torn about going and how many of us can truly put our hands on our hearts and say that if someone offered us a job that paid a bundle more and with much better working facilities, we would not go.
Like i said at the start i feel very sad about what has happened to RS, but something had to be done. I only wish that White & Booker had been sacked with Adams and that RS was allowed to bring in his own staff, but like all before him, he had to keep them on as part of the deal.
Good luck Russell.

Coppell for me - a different league to Adams who didnt really achieve anything after he left us first time round. Coppell turned Reading from a small town club into a high end Championship/lower Prem outfit with the support of a good chairman and without spending huge amounts of money. I remember when he was here before he tried to permanently bring in Sidwell and Hunt - he is fantastic at finding rough diamonds or purchases from the lower leagues such as Kevin Doyle from Ireland. In addition he is a strong character and well respected throughout the game. I really do think he is the man to lead us through to the new stadium and beyond

My sentiments exactly. Well said. Steve Coppell is superb.

Anyone know why Jim Gannon is not favourite on Bloom's list? He was a few months ago.

Jim Gannon is working in Scotland. He turned the Albion down when he had the chance to take the job and like Murray had a family who did not want to come south.
For it to be suggested that Gareth Southgate is excluded because he once missed a penalty is plainly ludicrous. He would certainly help recover the respect that has been lost during the Slade 'shift'!

My player ratings this season:

8 - Forster, Dicker, Bennett
7 - Tunni, Dickenson, Crofts, El-Abd
6 - Kuipers
5 - J Wright, Cox, A Davies
4 - Virgo, G Smith, Thornhill, Murray
3 - Elphick
2 - Navarro

This is for players who have played reqularly only. Thie like of Jamie Smith, Dave Livermore, Colin Hawkins, Craig Davies, Andrew Whing etc have not contributed regularly enough to get a score yet.

That makes the team average of 5.1 / 10. And I have been generous at times.

The new manager needs to be experienced, fair and a strong motivator. We are a poorly performing team and a big(ish name) will lift the club, the players and the fans.

COPPELL!!

Mrs Doyle, Hurst says...
4:10pm Mon 2 Nov 09

Coppell for me. You can't compare his returning with that of Adams, poor Micky hadn't had a lot of success immediately prior coming back to Brighton and was saddled with two poor coaches when he got here. If they had gone with him who knows where we might be now.

Knight might have 'saved' the club but by sacking Wilkins, which caused Chapman to leave too, and by some very strange moves in the transfer window prior to sacking Wilkins (losing Hammond and Bas Savage, almost as though he was trying to make Wilkins' job harder) whilst keeping White and Booker he nearly scuppered it too.

Yogi, Woodhall Spa says...

Who ever is selected must be his own man and bring in a strong right hand assistant. Rumour has it that one of the three sacked was saying that there are a number of disruptive elements in the squad. Obviously they didn't deal with the problem so the "new man" must and get the team and the club back on the right track. Steve Coppell and Steve Cotterill would be an ideal partnership to me. LET'S GET OUT OF THIS RUT NOW OR THE NEW GROUND WILL BE EMPTIER THAN THE WITHDEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my opinion posts on here are far too narrow minded and underestimate our position.
Look at the larger picture, we are now a club far better financed by most in this league, we now have an affluent Chairman prepared to put his money where his mouth is, he has reacted promptly and concisely with the problems at the club having given them time to sort themselves out, and he has friends in high places.
It would not surprise me if we apponted a major, respected manager shortly, maybe a Souness or similar, there are several similar charecters currently out of work. Also, I believe we have very strong contacts with the previous owners of Birmingham City, one of which is looking to invest in a club south of London, imagine the potential of that individual, with Mr Bloom, the new stadium etc - what could hold us back.............
Sorry about Mr Slade, he'll be O.K.

russellsnr, Pilonas says...
4:54pm Mon 2 Nov 09

To be honest I don’t think it matters at this point who we the supporters/fans want as manager, the thing that worries me about brining back ex managers is that if they where not 100% behind the club the first time round (if they had been they would have stayed) are they going to be second time. We do need IMO someone with experience and not an ex player from the premier league who thinks he can be a manager.
Also maybe worth looking outside the UK for a decent manager many premier clubs have done so with excellent results.

The old saying also applies here and that is you only get what you pay for so if we want a good capable manager maybe the club will have to dig into its coffers again for a manager and a full back.
With most of the players we have under good management and training staff we will still be there or there abouts at the seasons end.
UP THE ALBION.

Since we are not being given any more choices than those five I'd like to suggest that Steve Tilson of Southend Utd and Paul Tisdale of Exeter City would be good candidates. The former has overall win ratio of 42% in five seasons despite one being relegated from championship while Tisdale has over 50%, after two promotion seasons on the bounce. Wouldn't cost a lot and both could be lured with promise of new stadium, transfer funds etc. Both are also outperforming Albion. They don't need to be a big name.

You cannot blame Coppell and several other managers who departed due to the fact that money was not available to improve the team, as a result their reputation would be tarnished.
I consider that the two men who could really get this club back on its feet,Coppell or Curbishly would require a decent kitty for new signings and there just does not seem cash is available, its a shame because either of these men would be ideal to lead us out at Falmer.

The most disturbing thing to emerge from the Slade sacking, with which I agreed, was the Naylor revelation that the coaches were in the wrong jobs and that Slade, like Adams before him , didn't trust Barry Lloyd. Clearly this was disclosed to Naylor by Slade so what does it tell us about the way the club is run? The manager isn't allowed to employ support staff he believes are competent or trustworthy! What chance would any manager have under these circumstances? No self respecting manager would stand for it and Coppell and Curbishley would certainly reject any such impositions. Didn't Dean Wilkins find players had been signed that he didn't want? Didn't McGee get lumbered with the useless Argentinian who stood 6' 2" and jumped '5 8"? Didn't Adams protest that the Chief Scout reported to the Chairman and not the manager? This is not the way to run a football club and must not be allowed to happen again. Appoint Steve Coppell and let him manage!

I had forgotten the connection between Brown and Wise, I think I am going to be sick. There is no way Wise can be good for this club, he managed Millwall who nobody likes apart from their hardcore fan base, so it made it ok that one of the most unpopular people in football managed one of the most unpopular clubs, a match made in heaven. After fluking his way to a Cup Final when all the other teams failed to turn up, he left them to go with his old mate Ken Bates at Leeds, via a 10 minute spell at Swindon, where he didn't do much and they must have been overjoyed his other mate Mike Ashley took him to Newcastle for him only to hack everyone off up there then to be sacked by his probably by then ex-mate Mike Ashley. That leaves him one friend in the universe, Ken Brown, Albion's MD. I think I am going to be sick again.

Coppell - no thanks. He left the Albion before and he'll do it again as he's no loyalty to this club. As soon as his beloved Palace come calling again he'll be off - and that won't be too long if Jordan goes
Curbishley won't come to a club like ours - it's not big enogh for him.
Of the others mentioned there's nothing there that stirs the blood at all
I'd only be tempted to think of Dennis Wise were he to bring in Gus Poyet with him - Poyet is currently only doing the odd commentary on Sky sports
As Darren Ferguson seems about to be sacked at Peterborough perhaps we could wait for him - although he's young he's had a good spell with a poor club
Whoever comes in Mr Bloom is going to have to bring in a good "old head" at the centre of defence to keep Elphick on the straight and narrow - since Butters went there's been nobody to do that - or bring in Tony Adams as defensive coach (not manager).

Some of the posts here are ridiculous. Frank Graham says he will burn his season ticket if Steve Coppell returned to Brighton. The palace thing is so boring now. Like some people point out Coppell is exactly the type of manager this club needs to take us foward. He took Reading to the premiership on a small budget, he is shrewd, level headed, calm and experienced with the right cotacts at all levels. He knows exactly the type of players to buy and will steady the ship and take us forward. He never wanted to leave the first time round,we had no ground and no money. With Falmer on the way i think he has all the right incentives to come back. He is a totally different manager to Adams and i think it would work again. He can bring in his own men to support him, and finally every albion fan can hopefully stop moaning about all the misery we have had to endure over the last few seasons. Booker & White have gone which is by far the best decision the club has made in ages. I feel for Russell Slade, he was a good man. He saved us last season and in my book is an Albion hero. With the right backroom team he might have been able to do better things. We all now need to get behind whoever Tony Bloom and the board appoint and make this club great again.
