Tim Rivers scored his first senior goal to give Lewes a much-needed 1-0 win at home to Hampton and Richmond in Blue Square south.

The teenage striker struck three minutes before half-time to give the Rooks only their second league win of the season.

But the hero of the game was goalkeeper Rikki Banks who made a string of super saves to thwart Alan Devonshire's side.

David Wheeler had the first chance of the contest, prodding over the bar after capitalising on a misunderstanding in the visitors' defence.

Banks twice came to the rescue of Lewes midway through the half, first to deny Craig Dundass from close range and then coming out well to thwart Ashley Smith on the edge of his box.

The Rooks responded with Ryan Storrie's shot being blocked by a defender with goalkeeper Matt Lovett beaten and then Wheeler's low effort was saved at his near post by the keeper, both chances being set up by Rivers.

Rivers was to get his reward but first Banks made a superb double save when Ian Hodges seemed certain to score, although Lewes were left asking why the offside flag had not gone up.

The breakthrough came on 42 minutes when Wheeler scampered clear down the right and crossed for Rivers to fire home left-footed.

Banks made another good stop five minutes into the second half when Smith seemed set to level matters.

A super pass from Jack Walder played in Wheeler on 69 minutes and his shot went agonisingly wide of the far post.

A minute later the excellent Banks saved again from Hodges who got clear of the defence.

The chances were coming thick and fast and Walder, who grew in stature as the game went on, rifled past the far post with keeper Lovett rooted to the spot.

It was a nervy finish for Lewes but they had chances to finish it off with Lovett saving well from both Rivers and substitute Dan Royce.

In the seventh minute of stoppage time Banks made one more fabulous save to ensure victory, denying Dundass who looked odds-on to score from eight yards out.
