Albion want to talk to Tilson

Albion are ready to approach Southend for permission to speak to Steve Tilson as the process of finding a new manager gathers pace.

Gus Poyet and Steve Cotterill were interviewed yesterday and chairman Tony Bloom is now turning his attention to leading contenders currently employed after returning from a business trip to Singapore.

The Argus understands four candidates are at the very top of Bloom’s shortlist. He remains keen on Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins and Motherwell chief Jim Gannon, who is believed to be working without a contract at the Scottish Premier League club.

Tilson’s deal with financially stricken Southend expires at the end of next season. The 43-year-old has guided the Shrimpers to two promotions as he approaches his sixth year in charge at Roots Hall.

Paul Clark believes Southend’s financial problems could persuade Tilson to leave. The former Albion and Shrimpers midfielder said: “Southend may have paid off £2.1 million to the tax man to avoid administration but the position is still precarious.

“I think Brighton and Southend are fairly similar at the moment and from that point of view it probably wouldn’t be a move up.

“But if he’s fed up and Brighton are dangling the carrot of money being available and their new stadium closer then he may be tempted and I could understand that.”

The Argus website revealed yesterday morning that Cotterill, 45, has emerged as one of the frontrunners. The former striker, who had a spell on loan with Albion during his playing career, has been out of work since leaving Burnley in 2007.

He has also managed Stoke and Cheltenham and was Howard Wilkinson’s assistant at Sunderland.

Meanwhile, Darren Ferguson could suddenly become a late contender if history repeats itself. Sir Alex’s son parted company with Peterborough last night after guiding the Championship strugglers to successive promotions.

Fellow Scot Mark McGhee arrived late on the scene after splitting with Millwall to become Albion manager six years ago.

Caretaker Martin Hinshelwood is likely to remain in charge for Sunday’s south coast derby at Southampton if no decision has been made by Friday.

The club removed any uncertainty by confirming Hinshelwood would be taking the team 72 hours before last Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Wycombe, once Steve Coppell had ruled himself out.

Darren Ferguson leaving Peterborough now puts a whole new slant on the situation. The way he got Peterborough to play over the last two season. He had the chance to go to Reading in the closed season but decided to stay put. A good young manager one I would like to see in our dugout...

Darren Ferguson would be a tremendous coup. Knows this level and sets his sides up to play good football. All ifs and buts though.

Tilson, Poyet, Cotterill, Adkins and Gannon are mentioned but it is not clear which of those comprise the 'top four'. I am assuming that one of the applicants is, therefore, not on the list. Does anyone else read it this way or is it just my incomprehension?
I guess it will come down to who T.B. gets a spark from when he talks to them. The person who he feels he will be able to work with closely. In that case it is impossible for us to guess realistically.
A lot will depend on how much money Peter Taylor would want to assist Tilson as coach, I believe. T.B. would in effect be paying for two managers. Will money be the prohibition to his ambition?

As much as I think Ferguson would be a top manager I think we need a manager who will stick around for the long haul. He has already attracted interest from top Championship clubs and will continue to be linked with them even if he does take over here.

I think I'd prefer Tilson. He has a proven track record and has an eye for a good player too. As I've said before, maybe he could join us and raid his old club by offering peanuts for good players?

two promotions in two seasons says it all for me.fergie would be a great coup if he could be persuaded to come here, suspect he may hang around for another championship job, but would he be offered one? the plot thickens!

No disrespect to Brighton but I'd be very surprised if Tilly left us for you. Without wanting to sink this into a slanging match about which Club is bigger, essentially it's a sideways step right now and whilst no doubt he's annoyed and frustrated at the restrictions placed on him this season he still has the kind of job security at Southend that only Wenger & Ferguson enjoy right now. The fansbase will never turn on him and he has the Board's full support. Plus our Chairman has turned down approaches from other clubs in the past and I don't see why he'd even let Brighton talk to Tilson.

I'll be gutted if I'm wrong. Tilly is one of the best around, IMO.

if fergie can be persuaded to come his proffesional approach would soon turn us into a team capable of reaching the playoffs. and maybe he could get a few decent defenders from daddy

Tilson looks to 'dyed in the wool' Shrimper too me. Fergerson sounds better though. Doesn't his old man have something to do with football - a few decent loan players maybe...

surely the manager will ask who is in charge of scouting? is it the manager or barry lloyd, i get the idea, this gannon not coming was based on him not having his own men with him, and not his wife coming south, fergie junior wont be desperate for a job, and tilson wont come here to work with his hands tied behind his back either, who ever comes must get rid of the defence, its woeful.

it's not a woeful defence. Virgo has played champions league football so he can't be too bad. Whing and Elphick have both won player of the season for us which shows they can do it consistently. the whole team needs to be responsible for how we attack and how we defend, and we've been exposed all season by poor tactics and not enough commitment across the pitch

elphick, virgo, and elabd have all let players get wrong side, let them have too much time, and cant cope with the ball being moved to feet, Whing was player of the year, and was out of contract, but could not find a better club, this division is now where poor championship football was 5-6 years ago, the albion would be top 6, if only sides played the type of football they can defend! lol teams as the tranmere physio said, wont hoof the ball in the air, alnion are capable of heading it back till falmer rusts! Ian chapman was doing a report for southampton last week, what would you think he said in it? boot it from one end of the pitch? or get it down on the deck, into feet, and supply the right winger! saints are scoring 3 a game, have won 6 and drawn 1 from last 7 games! if we get a point it will be fantastic!

Can't see Gannon moving South unless his wife has changed her mind.
Cotterill - didnt he apply last time?
Ferguson - How many loan signings came from Man U when he was at Peterboro? - I don't recall many. May be worth a look though
Tilson/Adkins - hardly inspiring and won't raise the profile of the club
Poyet - a gamble but the rewards could be worth it. Would also raise the national (and international) profile of the club which could attract new players and sponsers etc to the stadium. Highest risk but without doubt highest chance of reward. Lets see how much of a gambler Bloom is!

As much as I like the idea of Darren Ferguson becoming Albion's next Manager, I am still amazed at the reasons behind his sacking from Peterborough ................
Posh's Chairman cited Ferguson's apparent lack of desire to purchase players from the Championship level and above, as being the main factor in the dismissal. This reluctance, coupled with the sides present league position was enough to wipe out a brilliant debut Managerial performance.
In other words, Ferguson has a knack of recognising players individual abilities whilst playing at a lower level of football. This saved the club money in taking them up to the Championship, whilst raising the performances of the new talent, in keeping with their league status. Unfortunately, there has been an inability to find good quality Championship level players utilising his preferred method of talent spotting, otherwise Peterborough would be holding their own in that league at the moment.
I applaud the guy for sticking to his methods religiously, but ultimately, in this high pressure, results orientated, footballing world, is this not Darren Ferguson's achilles heel? How far could he really take us from our present predicament? ...............
Albion surely require a Manager who will not only raise their league status considerably, but who will be on board for the long-term as well.
