Gus Poyet confirmed as Brighton and Hove Albion's new manager

Gus Poyet is Albion's new manager.

The former Chelsea and Spurs midfielder accepted the job offer this morning and has agreed a contract until the end of next season.

Watch the full press conference above

Joining Poyet as the club's new assistant manager is Mauricio Taricco. The former Ipswich and Tottenham defender was a team-mate of Poyet's at White Hart Lane.

Chairman Tony Bloom said, "Gus is one of the best up and coming young coaches in this country and we are delighted to give him his first opportunity in management.

"His credentials are exceptional and all of the reports we have had on his coaching ability are outstanding.

"I am certain he will be a big success with the Albion, and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome both Gus and Mauricio to the club."

The 41-year-old Uruguayan enjoyed an illustrious playing career as an attacking midfielder, including spells in his home country with Grenoble and River Plate Montevideo. In 1990 he moved to Europe, signing for Spanish La Liga giants Real Zaragoza, before switching to Chelsea in 1997 on a Bosman free transfer.

He made well over 100 appearances at Stamford Bridge, before switching to Spurs in 2001 for a fee in region of £2m, and spent three years at White Hart Lane.

He ended his career with over 400 first-class appearances and an excellent goalscoring average of a goal in every three games.

Since retiring from playing, his coaching career has included spells at Swindon Town and Leeds United, as assistant to Dennis Wise, before returning to Tottenham as number two Juande Ramos.

He helped guide Spurs to Carling Cup success in 2008, before leaving the London club last October. In December he turned down the opportunity to link up with Ramos at Real Madrid, as he was keen to get his managerial break in England.

Taricco spent ten years playing in England, with the majority in the Premier League. He had five years at Ipswich between 1994 and 1999 and followed that with another five-year stint at Spurs. He had a short spell with West Ham before retiring to Sardinia to play amateur football.

Well, this is certainly going to put us on the map. Let's hope Gus can not only keep the flair and goalscoring going but put a stopper in our leaky defence. We'll wait and see but let's hope with Mauricio he gets long enough to do a proper job and get us Championship bound for Falmer.

Well I can only hope as many of us are going to do that this is not a gamblers choice, as a player I don’t think you could fault Gus, as a manager, well only time will tell, he must have a lot of contacts not only in the UK but around the world so maybe in that respect he will be able to get the player/s he wants and as already stated one to plug up a very leaky defence. We can but only wish him well & keep the fingers crossed, don’t expect miracles in the first 3 or 4 games but we have all had enough of”The players need to gel scenario” and we desperately need to move up that table, we have I believe the players (except in defence) to finish in the top half so please Players do what the club pays you for and start winning.

2:00pm Tue 10 Nov 09

Look where we are - Yes we have Matty, but we also have a very good defence. We are improving week by week! 5 loses in 60 odd league games says it all! Maybe Brighton need to take a day trip to our training ground to see how it is done. As for Nigel Pearson - How can you slate a manager who at his first attempt took us up as CHAMPIONS and are currently in a stable position in the championship. How much has he spent on the squad? Not alot, just good loan signings! Just admit, you have not made the right signings, which now includes the appointment of Gus. Prove me wrong! Sorry but these are facts and i know the truth hurts, but you also need to be real and you must admit is a huge risk appointing a manager with no experience given where the club are now. Brilliant if it works, but i cant see it somehow.

Nice positive post Skaghead.
It is widely believed that the success of the Wise/Poyet partnership was much more to do with the Poyet half.
I don't know anything about the ability of Mauricio Taricco as far as coaching/management goes but as a player he was hugely respected for his will to win at Ipswich, if he can foster that in our current squad we will do well.

Being a Brighton fan for 45 years, i have been through some managers within the club. I personally feel that we have made the wrong choice in Mr poyet. He is inexperienced and has more chance of us getting relegated than promoted with the crop of players we have. Other managers have tried to work with them and have failed. What will Gus do different? So, Big Gus Poyet.
Upside:
Fresh start and a new man with something to prove.
First -rate coaching credentials.
High profile.
Good player= current- player respect.
Downside:
A gamble.

Conclusion:
As it stands this season he just needs to sort out the defence and deliver mid-table obscurity. Hopefully the guy is capable of that. We can then take it from there in 2010/2011.
UP THE ALBION !!

Gus Poyet is a good fit for where we are and where he is. If he is a success and builds us up toward Falmer and beyond then I see no reason why he should ‘leggit’ as he is accused of doing in the past.

Of course it doesn't because their ability as players is no way representative of their abilities as managers or coaches. Yet time and time again you spout out all of these mates who support a club or are scouts at another club in the belief it somehow makes your words more important and your opinion count more on mates. Given some of the uninspiring names mentioned, I think Poyet could prove to be an astute appointment. He will command respect from his success at top level in his playing days and he seems quite grounded from having learnt the ropes as an Assistant to both Dennis Wise and Juande Ramos.

When I saw that Darren Ferguson had been fired rather harshly by Peterborough, I thought Brighton could make a late move for him as he clearly knows how to get the best out of a team at this level, but Poyet had already made his impression on the board by then. Brighton could have done a lot worse given some of the proposed candidates out there.

Well done Mr Bloom a very good choice, at last we have a younger manager that is hungry to prove himself at manager level. When he was with Wise I still say it was because of Gus that Leeds played so well and Swindon come to that. And for Ramos wanting to take him with him shows he must be a very decent up and coming manager.
We needed a fresh start and now we have one, so lets all get behind Gus and give him our full support as I am sure he will with his assistant, sort out the rubbish defence and move us forward. He has much knowledge and will have many contacts which can only be a bonus for the club and us as supporters.

It screams of “ooohhh look who I know, I must know what I’m talking about cause my mates is a scout for Notts Forest….” Oh and learn to spell UEFA while you are at it. You get it wrong every time.

I think Defector is winding you up. I am an Ipswich fan (living in Brighton) and can tell you that Tarrrrriiiiicco is a legend at Portman Road.

Amongst many happy memories are a stunning cup goal against Man Utd, but the main thing he brought was composure, class and an iron fist in a velvet glove. I.e he had silky skills put knew how to handle himself.

I'm ecstatic about this appointment, and wish Gus and Maurice the best of luck - with the moaners down here they will need i

Poyet should be able to attract better players than Slade. Come January I hope there will be another player clear out with new players comming in. It will be interesting to see who will come in on the training side of things, South American versons of Booker and White?

Nice post Mr Numpty head totally agree can I just add we are not all moaners on here, like you we love our club and we will always support it which we have through thick and thin. You will always get wind up merchants that like to stir things up a few have been Palace supporters, and you will always get moaners. Gus and Taricco will get the full support of the fans, the club and team. Welcome to the south coast mate.

I thought someone was joking when he told me GP got the job! Maybe the club has paid out enough paying off previous managers and couldnt afford anyone else. It all went wrong when Dean Wilkins went and it isnt gonna get any better now. Conference football here we come!

think about this... Gus was a quality premier league player - this is a major challenge for him but i beleive that he has what it takes, i think a lot of you have missed the point with Taricco - where is the seagulls problem position? defence! Taricco was a well estabished premier league defender and you dont play at that standard for some time unless you have what it takes- hopefully he can pass what he knows on to the seagulls defenders as they do need to learn how to defend. Lets get behind both Gus and Taricco and reserve judgement until they have had a few home games and stamped their mark on the team.

best look up in the song book to remind me of the words to "is that all you take away" and "sht ground no fans" for when this happens. Have aq feeling you could be right, fourth divison mediocrity next year at best :(

Gentleman Jim, North Brighton says...

The club is in the relegation zone and requires an experienced manager and coach to escape ending up in Div 2,so we appoint a man who has not managed before assisted by a coach without coaching experience. Its taking a hell of a chance.

It's a gamble but let's hope it comes off. It's a gamble because he is as yet unproven as a manager. Good players and good coaches don't necessarily make good managers; the skill set required is different. If the gamble is to succeed Poyet must be given full control of all his support staff. We cannot have the Chief Scout doing his own thing and reporting direct to The Chairman rather than the manager. This has caused many problems in the past and must not be allowed to happen again.

Any new Manager is a gamble, there has been many a good manager who has failed at one club or another.
Harry Redknap looked a good appointment at Southampton but it didn't work out.

The risk is always there, most of you were thinking promotion was nailed on when Adams was appointed.

I believe Poyet will be successful here, it is crucial to his career that he is, he has not rushed to take on a managers role, he has done his apprenticeship (and some) as an assistant and knows he is ready and able to do the job and do it well.

mr punch, bantry says...

Reading these posts it seems that most people are either positive or excited about the new manager. Some are a little worried citing the manager's lack of experience. Well, everyone has to start somewhere and, believe it or not, we are at the moment still a small club, a stepping stone perhaps but if it works then what's wrong with that?
Let's face it, at the moment we are in deep trouble, RS kept us up but couldn't do it in his own right but this time Poyet has enough time to not only stave off the threat of relegation, but also to make moves up the table so we could possibly be in the shake up come the end of the season. Big name or not we aren't the most fashionable club in the country. I have been supporting Brighton for 32 years now and, apart from the FA Cup final and our little dally into the old division 1, there's not been a great deal of glory but I still support them and still feel that I should be able to have my voice heard.
Good luck to Gus Poyet, even as Pitar says, he does have a high forehead.

u must be a real limp dicked tw@t if you get your jollies polluting Albion news stories on a very important day for the club. How ironic also, that we have a fan of a club (Leicester) who screwed their creditors to the tune of £30 Million taking the p155 out of The Albion who are where we are right now because we are not a low life club like Leicester. Still, it's nothing less than we'd expect from knuckle draggers with no morals.

It won't make a blind bit of difference, unless the Albion can sack all the existing players, and poach a team from players in the premiership.
But that ain't going to happen.

spot on the money. Brighton have signed plenty of decent young players from local teams only to develop about 25% of their potential
