Crawley's bid to sign Ashley Grimes has been scuppered by an injury crisis at Millwall.
Reds were hoping to bring in the 22-year-old for a month to boost a squad ravaged by injury and suspension.
But Lions’ boss Kenny Jackett has pulled out of the deal, confirming instead that Grimes will be involved in tomorrow’s FA Cup second round tie at Staines.
Jackett said: “It isn’t going to happen because we need all the forwards we’ve got at the moment.
“Two of our senior forwards, Neil Harris and Gary Alexander, are out injured so we aren’t in a position where we can release Ashley at the moment.
“He will be involved against Staines on Saturday.”
It leaves Reds with just one fit forward for tomorrow’s trip to Gateshead although, ironically, the home side’s attack could be led by two ex-Crawley strikers.
Daryl Clare has recently extended his loan spell from Mansfield and they yesterday brought in Jon Shaw, who scored five goals in 17 appearances on loan last season, from Rochdale for a month. Shaw had a loan spell at Barrow earlier this season.
