Seagulls boss predicts deadline-beating signings

Albion boss Gus Poyet expects to add at least one more new signing to his squad before the transfer window slams shut.

Permanent deals have to be completed by 5pm today and Poyet is keen to supplement the capture of Cambridge United striker Chris Holroyd, who made his debut as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Millwall.

Asked if he is still hoping to bring new faces in, Poyet said: “Yes, definitely. I knew before the game we need more, it’s not because of the game.

“We are working very hard and we’ve got a few options. By Monday at five o’clock there could be good news or maybe not.”

Holroyd will sign an 18-month contract today after joining on loan initially so that he was available to face Millwall.

It took the 23-year-old almost a week to agree personal terms but he was always confident the move would be completed.

The Cheshire-born marksman said: “With any deal there are always things that need ironing out. I was desperate to come here and I wasn’t going to pass that up.

“What ever compromises I had to make, whether it be that it’s the other end of the country from my home, I was happy to make those sacrifices.

“It was just little bits and bobs getting sorted out. It was nothing major. I was always confident it was going to get sorted.”

Holroyd almost equalised with a header and a late Glenn Murray header hit a post after a mistake by Adam Virgo gifted Steve Morison Millwall’s winner.

Holroyd said: “I flicked it and it went the other side of the post. It was one of those days. We hit the post and things weren’t going for us.

“Obviously, we are in a bit of a predicament at the moment. My goals are the team’s goals. We need to get out of the position we are in and I think we have got a good squad to do that.”

So no signings then. No big deal and we shall have to get on with it. I believe there is enough ability but whether there is enough desire is another matter.

It's down to the the management and coaching staff to get that going and get them organised.

Doubts remain!
