Rebels have budget slashed in half

Simon Colbran has urged his Worthing players not to let a budget cut ruin their season.

The Rebels' playing budget has been slashed in half as they enter the most important stage of the season.

Colbran’s men are third in the table with 11 games to go, starting with tomorrow’s trip to Corinthian-Casuals.

The budget cuts were proposed in January when the club announced a £20,000 shortfall between income and expenditure.

However, they were never implemented after Worthing supporters came up with measures to top up the budget fund. That money has now run out which means the original cuts will take place.

Colbran has pledged his future to the club and insists none of his players will leave but he is also keen to avoid the slump in form which followed when the January cuts were announced.

He said: “The players are all 100% committed to the club but it is frustrating because of where we are in the league and the fact that it is the second time it has happened.

“I have had a chat with the players to tell them the situation and to talk about what happened last time.

“I said we are where we are because of the hard work we have all put in since pre-season training last July and that we shoudn’t waste all that in the last seven weeks of the season.”

Glen Woodburn is hopeful of returning for tomorrow’s game after missing two matches with bruised ribs. Karl Akehurst and Ryan Woodford will be pushing for a first-team recall in a week’s time after recovering from long-term injuries.

Akehurst was on the bench for last Saturday’s game with Eastbourne Town after three months out with a broken ankle although Colbran admitted it was just to ease him back into action rather than put him on.
