Austin goal sinks Albion

Albion's Withdean curse struck again as their four-match unbeaten run ended with a 1-0 defeat at home to Swindon Town.

Young hotshot Charlie Austin struck the only goal 21 minutes to condemn Albion to a loss which drops them one place to 18th in the table.

The Seagulls bossed much of the game but did not look like getting out of it after falling behind.

Albion have enjoyed good results at Leeds, Charlton and Colchester in the last four games but the win at home to Exeter remains their only three points at Withdean since October.

They will now try to rectify that record at home to Brentford on Tuesday.

Manager Gus Poyet named an unchanged line-up for the third successive game and his pre-match plans were boosted by the absence of Swindon's 21-goal top scorer Billy Paynter who was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

The Robins suffered a further blow on 13 minutes when goalkeeper David Lucas limped off with what also appeared to be a hamstring problem.

They also lost Paynter's replacement, Vincent Pericard, in a first-half which Albion bossed.

Andrew Crofts fired wide with a low shot and Gary Dicker shot over the top but the best chance was a header from Glenn Murray which Gordon Greer cleared off the line with Smith beaten.

Murray also had a good penalty appeal turned down when he appeared to be floored by Greer.

Swindon's best chance was a shot by substitute Mark Marshall in first-half stoppage-time which Peter Brezovan saved at his near post.

The visitors were forced into a third charge at half-time as Danny Ward, who had been pushed up front in place of Pericard, went off injured.

Three minutes into the second half Elliott Bennett burst into the penalty area on to Dicker's pass and fired over.

Austin shot narrowly wide of the far post on 58 minutes after a slip by Adam El-Abd and that signalled Swindon's best spell of the game.

Brezovan made a fine save to keep out Greer's header from an Alan Sheehan corner on 65 minutes but was beaten four minutes later.

Marshall crossed from the left and Jon-Paul McGovern laid the ball back for Austin who fired low into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Poyet reacted by throwing on two forwards including Nicky Forster, who got the biggest cheer of the day.

However, their only real chance after falling behind came in the first minute of added time when Kazenga LuaLua's shot was saved low down after a great run.

Albion: Brezovan; Calderon, Elphick, El-Abd, Painter (Forster 75); Bennett, Navarro (sub Holroyd 71), Crofts, Dicker, LuaLua; Murray. Subs not used: Hart, McNulty, Carole, Hoyte, Walker.

Swindon: Lucas (sub Smith 13); Darby, Cuthbert, Greer, Sheehan; McGovern, Douglas, Ferry, Ward (sub Easton 46); Pericard (sub Marshall 33), Austin. Subs not used: Timlin, Ritchie, Amankwaah, Jean-Francois.

Referee: Grant Hegley (Hertfordshire).

Very frustrating - Swindon are ordinary but have beaten us twice. I doubt they will go up through the play-offs but they will be straight back down if they do.
Does anyone think Hoyte and Carole are worth places on our payroll?

Sorry, but I am normally pretty positived on this site but today was spitting nails on leaving the withdean. We diddnt start with much purpose and when we really needed some positive action from the 3 center forwards late doors it never arrived. Swindon hung on very easily and again home fans had to shuffle away very dissapointed !!!

Gus, we need a home victory on Tuesday!

No Withdean curse, just a poor second-half performance. Despite this, there have been good solid performances of late, and still only the top side has scored more than one league goal against us this year.

Our main problem is still scoring more than one goal in a game. When we score two or more, we win. I believe Gus is doing a really good job but I'm mystified why our top goalscorer had to wait so long to come on today and why he wasn't used at all in the Colchester game. Does Gus still have a problem with Fozzie, despite the latter's highly conciliatory statements?

Following recent results I felt we had a good chance of a long awaited home win.
We started slowly giving Swindon plenty of possession but then began to keep the ball on the ground as we did at Colchester resulting in us getting more of the game, what instructions were given by Gus and co at half time, because it allowed Swindon to control the game until the end of a poor match. It must be noted that our opponents had lost their first choice goalkeeper and striker yet took the three points, despite looking a very ordinary First Division side

Disappointing result and a set back probably more psychologically than anything else.

Home defeat on Tuesday would see a real downturn though. Need to overcome this phobia about playing at home.

It was a tight game but as always you can rely on Adam El Abd to make a mistake and it was his misplaced defensive header from the left wing cross that presented Swindon with their goal.Im afraid hes too error prone to be a stalwart in the Brighton defence and quite how Poyet can describe him as one of our best defenders is beyond me.

Sorry to say - its almost back to square 1 today. Passing was below par, ball control was dodgy, always needing the extra second which Swindon didn't allow. Clearances fronm defence generally went straight to the opposition. If they had been half decent it would have 4-0 or worse. Bennett's corners were bad at times. Even Claderon was at fault today. LuaLua is wasting his time and our money (or Tony's). They only benefit of my season ticket is I do get to see the odd win here and there. £400 for three wins and three draws so far.

I know it was a dull game, but we were still better than Swindon. Got away with defensive errors, but am I the only one who thinks Holroyd is out of his depth?

Yes - but Holroyde was no worse then Murray - and I bet Murray's on ore money. Better than Swindon? Its goals and the result that counts.

Well today's result makes it 5 blanks in the last 8 home league games - hardly thrilling stuff for the fans I'm afraid, and a dismal total of 14 goals in 17 home league matches. Playing alone up front Murray sure doesn't look like breaking his 11 month home drought any time soon, and suddenly our striking options look bare, despite an almost single-handed attacking effort for 90 minutes by LuaLua today. Just a thought but would Dickinson and Davies not offer a more potent alternative on the bench right now than Holroyd, Hart & Carole, even if we are set on getting rid of both of them in the summer ?

Yes on the face of it, Dickinson is certainly superior to H, H and C. But I'm pretty sure Dickinson is out on loan as Poyet feels he is not committed to the team and he is rightly focusing on the team ethic. Btw, when I saw Tunnicliffe play at the start of the season he looked on the slow side and not as commanding as he should have been in the air. I've never seen Davies play.
