New deal for Calderon is a priority

ALBION are planning to secure the long-term future of starring Spaniard Inigo Calderon.

The right-back has been outstanding since becoming Gus Poyet’s first signing of the January window on a contract for the rest of the season.

Calderon, 28, was the sponsor’s man-of-the-match in Saturday’s home defeat by Swindon and will be towards the top of the list when new deals are finalised in order to stave off potential suitors.

Poyet revealed: “It is something we have to look at. I am looking forward to keeping him here for many years. He likes it here, he knows the situation so we are working on it.

“The good thing is if I look at the players I’ve brought in everyone can realise now how good Peter (Brezovan) has been for us and Calderon has been outstanding all the time. I think people now understand why Marcos (Painter) is playing and how solid he is and everyone can see LuaLua.

“Everybody seems to be happy with them because they are different or better than what we have got.

“That is the way I would like to work from now on and try not to make many mistakes. At the moment it is working but it is not enough.”

Meanwhile, former manager Barry Lloyd’s role in the scouting set-up has been redefined.

He is now answerable to director of football Martin Hinshelwood, with responsibility for identifying new scholars rather than potential first team signings. An overall review of the scouting structure will be conducted by Poyet during the close season.

Hurry up then lads!!! The sooner the club is mathematically safe, the sooner you'll know your futures. (lol)
On the other topic, can someone define the full-time roles of "Director of Football" and "Chief Scout" for me. Or will there be a new post of "Assistant Director of Football" when Gus gets his own chief scout in?

the term scholars would mean aged 16 plus? so barry will be paid to find good 16 year olds? i thought that was hinshs job? fantastic news on caldi, best rightback since john gregory. seems gus now has control of the squad, something managers from before coppel wanted.. clearly the youth system is under performing which is why Brown and now lloyd are there.. more work on the youth is required.. but its all going in right direction..

Personally I’d love to see both Calderon and Lua Lua come here on longer deals but it would obviously be dependent on us staying up which still isn’t definite.

Painter could also prove to be a valuable acquisition in the summer and if Swansea go up which isn’t beyond the realms of possibility I think he’ll be ours.

Very good (but not surprising) news about Calderon, but when is Gus going to offer Carole a 5-year deal to sit on the bench or come on and look inept?

Thank goodness Barry Lloyd has been reduced in status and power - long overdue.

Good news about Lua Lua and Calderon. What about offering Elphick a new contract?

What are Hoyte and Carole still doing here? Whing and Cox are better than them!

whing is out on loan, cox is training with the youth! neither will play again for the albion.. again.. hoyte i think is one who needs his confidence, carole is a out and out winger, ideal sub for either wing.. give it 5 months and we will be saying cox who! there is going to be a massive spend this summer, on quality. fans must realise the days of spin are over. get your season tickets now!

Good news about Barry Lloyd, maybe he has some sort of contract to run, so they can't get rid of him completely (at least for a while).
The new 'Broom' or should that read 'Bloom' is gradually sweeping clean.

Good stuff here all of which I like to hear. Not too many loanees and short term contracts. BL relegated to youth. Continues to emphasise GP/TB have identified poor recruitment in the past and are responding.

GP is clearly his own man and will sign the players he wants not what someone else comes up with. But he keeps in touch with those he feels may have a job still. Impressed he went to see Tunnicliffe the other night. He is definitely a 24/7 man.

To be fair I think he went to see Swindon primarily rather than seeing how Tunnicliffe was getting on. Anyway to reiterate, all positive news today - the times they are achanging....

Cox isn't training with the youth so why throw that in? Seagulls World, yesterday, interview with Poyet about tonight's match shows Cox clearly training with Calderon, Crofts and Hart.

Carlos, do you know Inigo or do you support his former club Alaves?

If so, what can you tell us about his football history?
