ALBION are planning to secure the long-term future of starring Spaniard Inigo Calderon.

The right-back has been outstanding since becoming Gus Poyet’s first signing of the January window on a contract for the rest of the season.

Calderon, 28, was the sponsor’s man-of-the-match in Saturday’s home defeat by Swindon and will be towards the top of the list when new deals are finalised in order to stave off potential suitors.

Poyet revealed: “It is something we have to look at. I am looking forward to keeping him here for many years. He likes it here, he knows the situation so we are working on it.

“The good thing is if I look at the players I’ve brought in everyone can realise now how good Peter (Brezovan) has been for us and Calderon has been outstanding all the time. I think people now understand why Marcos (Painter) is playing and how solid he is and everyone can see LuaLua.

“Everybody seems to be happy with them because they are different or better than what we have got.

“That is the way I would like to work from now on and try not to make many mistakes. At the moment it is working but it is not enough.”

Meanwhile, former manager Barry Lloyd’s role in the scouting set-up has been redefined.

He is now answerable to director of football Martin Hinshelwood, with responsibility for identifying new scholars rather than potential first team signings. An overall review of the scouting structure will be conducted by Poyet during the close season.
