Ben Murphy’s disappointing week ended with a points defeat in Leigh last night.
The pint-sized powerhouse from Hove discovered earlier this week that his challenge for Lee McAllister’s Commonwealth lightweight title had fallen through after the Scotsman pulled out through injury and instead, Murphy accepted a fight with unbeaten John Watson at short notice.
At the final bell of the six rounder, Murphy thought his bustling attacks had done enough to earn the points decision, but referee Steve Gray scored the fight 59-56.
That was harsh on the Southern Area lightweight champion from Hove.
Although he suffered a bloodied nose in the fourth when Watson found the room to work, every round was close and hard fought.
Murphy was quicker to settle and also finished the fight on top, but his non-stop attacks went unrewarded by the referee He shrugged his shoulders when Watson’s hand was raised at the end of six hard-fought rounds.
