Elliott Bennett has revealed the part played by Albion coach Charlie Oatway in his wonder goal at Oldham.

Bennett’s super strike from 20 yards at Boundary Park was in stark contrast to his first touch of the game, a badly scuffed corner which went straight out for a goalkick.

He said: “It went very wrong! I was supposed to be chipping it to the front post but I caught it terribly.

“I’ve been speaking to Charlie quite regularly and he says if you do something bad on the pitch don’t let it get to you.

“I can think about things a bit too much. He says to get on with it and the next time do something good.”

Former Wolves winger Bennett, 21, has labelled the goal that followed the best of an 11-goal career including loan spells at Bury and Crewe.

“That was number one,” he said. “I really enjoyed it, especially as we hadn’t started the game well. It gave us a bit of a boost so it was quite an important goal.

“I heard Gary Dicker shouting in his Irish voice to shoot so I thought I’d have a go. I was delighted when it went in.

“My goalscoring wasn’t the best when I first came here and I said I wanted to improve that. I have doubled my goal tally now from last season (three to six) and we have still got nine games left.

“I’d love to keep getting on the scoresheet but as long as we are still winning I’ll be happy.”
