Lewes must focus on improving their record against the bottom sides after giving themselves hope in their battle for Blue Square south survival.

The Rooks made it back-to-back home wins with a 1-0 victory over Bromley to move within five points of fourth-bottom Worcester with two games in hand.

They head to Worcester on Saturday knowing a victory will give them a great chance of catching their rivals but also aware their record against the bottom sides is not great.

Steve Ibbitson’s men have dropped five points to relegated Weymouth, lost away to second-bottom Weston-super-Mare and surrendered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 at home to Worcester.

Boss Ibbitson said: “I said we needed to win four of our last six and this is one of them. We have got to look at the other games and pick up our wins where we can.

“I’m saying we need to win three more games as if it is an easy thing to do but we haven’t won that many games this year.

“We have played better often against the better sides than we have against the lower sides. We should have buried Worcester when we played them down here and were 3-0 up and that is going to make it more difficult for us on Saturday because they will believe we collapse under pressure which we did that day.

“They will be bombarding us and we will have to stand up to that and go out and try to play.”

Lewes certainly played good football in spells yesterday against a Bromley side, managed by former Crystal Palace chairman Mark Goldberg, who looked short on ideas.

The Rooks made a positive start with Joe Keehan having a shot held after just 12 seconds and on-loan Albion winger Steve Brinkhurst scuffing a chance wide in the third minute.

It was no surprise when they went ahead in the tenth minute following some great trickery from Brinkhurst inside the penalty area before crossing across the face of goal for David Wheeler to prod home at the back post.

There was some suggestion the ball went in off a defender but Ibbitson was happy to give the goal to Wheeler afterwards.

Joe Keehan had the opportunity to double the advantage in the 21st minute after Jack Walder was brought down in the penalty area by Wes Daly but his weak spot-kick was saved by Wes Foderingham.

The confidence visibly sapped from Lewes at that stage and Bromley could have been level within a minute but a shot from Marcus Cassius was deflected wide from a great position.

The hosts gradually found their stride again and the half ended with Chris Breach firing just wide from 20 yards.

Ibbitson’s men also made a positive start to the second half with Walder seeing one shot held and another beaten away before Keehan hit the near post after a delightful move.

Bromley almost levelled again with 14 minutes remaining in comedy fashion when Banks let a Cassius header slip through his hands but Anthony Barness cleared off the line at full stretch.

Lewes, though, deserved the win and finished the stronger with Keehan going close again.

Ibbitson added: “I feared they might grab an equaliser which would have been a travesty because we were by far and away the better side.”
