Mike Yardy believes Sussex’s winning start to the Twenty20 Cup can re-ignite their Championship challenge.
The county were on course for an immediate return to division one after winning their first four games of the season.
But two defeats followed and in their last match, when Yardy returned to captain the side, they were held to a draw by Worcestershire.
He said: “We have taken a lot of confidence from the two Twenty20 wins to take forward.
“It doesn’t matter what competition you are playing in, if you are winning games it makes life a lot easier and we have a majority of guys who are playing in both formats.
“Overall I would say we are doing well in the Championship. We lost a couple of games but then the draw against Worcestershire got us back on track.
“Ideally, if we can win at Derby that would give us five wins out of eight at halfway and put us in a good position.”
With Corey Collymore back in Barbados because of a family bereavement, Sussex will have to make one change with James Anyon or Ragheb Aga his likely replacement.
Meanwhile Sussex wicketkeeper Matt Prior was 21 not out overnight as England reached 275-5 on the first day of the second Test against Bangladesh at Old Trafford.
