Morais still has chance to earn Albion contract

Filipe Morais Filipe Morais

Gus Poyet has not ruled out keeping Filipe Morais, despite the on-trial winger’s limited chances in Portugal.

Morais got just 15 minutes of action in two games on the Algarve, from where Poyet and his squad returned last night.

The former Millwall flyer came off the bench in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland but saw his chances of doing likewise against Portimonense end when the game was abandoned.

Poyet was non-committal on Morais’s chances of securing the return south he craves but said: “I thought he did okay. It’s not just games, it’s training, but it’s not just how he did, it’s what we need, the contract, so many things. We had a busy week. People read ‘Portugal’ and think ‘holiday’ but it was not a holiday. We had ten or 11 training sessions and two games.”

Wales under-21 defender Aaron Morris, released by Cardiff recently, is believed to be on his way to Albion for a trial. The 20-year-old has been trying his luck at Exeter of late.

Albion’s only remaining senior friendly is at home to Aberdeen on Saturday, though the club are sending a young side to face Eastbourne Town at the Saffrons tonight (7.45pm). Andrew Whing is the most senior player likely to feature while Poyet will also take a look at Jack MacFarlane, a 16-year-old released by Southampton and former Brentford keeper Clark Masters, 22.

Meanwhile, former Albion keeper John Sullivan could secure a loan move from Millwall to Yeovil after his performance in a 3-2 friendly victory over Manchester United reserves on Saturday. Free agent Adam Virgo, looking to secure a deal at Huish Park, headed the winner.

I wonder if Gus is still hopefull of Kaz Lua Lua coming but keeping this guy as a 'Plan B'?
Mark B.T.Sea suggested he (Lua Lua) was Doncaster bound. Does anyone know any more?

from what i understand, Lua Lua wants to come here, newcastle obviously want him to develope at the highest level, from there point of view they want him in championship.. sticking point is he might not be in starting 11 .. think your right though gus is holding out for Lua Lua.. also see we are looking at a 20 year old defender.. not wanted at exeter.. ? squad is dangerously thin on ground .. first two game we are without Greer amd Murray.. couple of injuries and we will be in the mire.. think its time for the cheque book to be splashed, or we will noot catch up.. saints, notts county sheff weds, to name but three are all strong sides, i see Darius Vassell is looking for a club? stiil thirty? can play wide left or down middle? worth a 6 month deal i reckon.

@markbythesea: have you written a post in the last week where you didn't use the phrase "squad is dangerously thin on the ground" ?
You seem to flit between genuine insight and reptitive phrase syndrome. At least you haven't mentioned Booker and White much recently... :)

i would say they have 7 days to sort the squad out, its no point in waiting.. to get out of this league, club will need to spend, i am worried about the side for swindon, say barnes, elphick, or caldi are injured? we might get a starting 11 on the field, but the bench would be a joke.. also i thought the club were going to bring in a developent coach for the 18-21 players? there is alot of wrk to be done to get out of this league, i would prefer to point it out now, than jump on the bandwagon, when the moaners start.

If Elphick gets injured, El Abd will stand in - we all know Gus likes him. If Calderon gets injured then Kishishiev or Hart will go there. More of a worry for Barnes, but the odds are that he WON'T get injured before Murray returns.

Greer is also banned for first two games, so we have no cover at centreback, and nothing on bench.. we cant shuffle the whole pack to start the season, kishi looks a quality mid fielder, cant start shuffling the pack to get 11 on the pitch!

i know it wouldn't be ideal, but dunk is also cover at centreback. it's throwing him in at the deep end, i know, but it could be valuable experience for him.

i don't think anyone is under the illusion that the squad we have now will be the ones which we start the season with. gus is after another defender (one on trial as we speak) & i'm sure that if the lua lua situation doesn't resolve itself shortly, gus will have a plan already in place.

the only position i am worried about is a striker, as i am sure we are going to have a lot of competition for whoever we are after.

no offence to Dunk, but he is not ready, defender we are looking at is 20? without being funny, we could end up with Hart, Holroyd, elabd, and dunk either starting or getting some time on the pitch! my point in terms of signings is this, we signed greer, we lost crofts, we signed sparrow.. and kishi.. i honestly think we wont go up without three more top top players.. i dont think this ex chelsea guy is the answer, or a player exeter did not want.. saturdays game will not be a non contact or "friendly" game.. i will expect a few bookings and rash tackles.. from both sides, lets see monday how the squad looks for availability.

Obviously haven't seen enough of him for a considered opinion but wasn't the idea that one of the Argie lads could play up front if required or are they both considered attacking midfielders ?

I believe Masters was at Albion a few years ago.
Morris seems to prefer Exeter: www.thisisexeter.co.

The two young Argentines could prove to be the surprise packages of the coming season for the Albion. Gus & Mauricio are likely to get the best out of them, I just hope they adapt to being a long way from home.

Turned on the T.V just in time to see the second goal scored by Spain U19's against England U19's. When the doctrine of "pass and move" is allied to technique and flair football is by far the best game ever conceived. It's early days yet for The Albion but let's hope they stick with their intention to play football in the right way even when results might go against them. Let's hope the supporters also have the patience to stick with it.

An Argus item (not in the Albion section) which some might have seen headed 'L of a Knight'.
Evidently Leon does not have a contract and is 'fishing' for one by the sound of things........shame!

This could be the statement of the year. Feel slightly disappointed with are transfer activity, not quality, because I think Gus has brought well, but thought a top striker would be here by now and bedded in. Players out, both sold and on long-term loans have put us in credit. Mark b the s is right to bang on about how thin the squad is. In this league at least two pro’s will be out relatively long term injured before xmas
And if Murray continues to pick up cards he will reach suspension again sooner rather than later. So the two Argie boys may make a much bigger impact this season than anyone can imagine at this stage. Still on the GUS BUS, just time to splash some serious cash.

just reading that Watford have bid around half a million for Walsall striker Troy Deeney. You have to wonder where we can go for an experienced striker if that is the price being asked for someone who has promise but is still far from the finished article. No wonder we have been looking abroad when homebased players are so over-valued

In my opinion the squad is only lacking Lua-lua and a top stiker. the spine of the team is good...central defence - any from Elphick, Greer, El Abd or Caldi.....central midfield - any from Sparrow, Kishi, Dicker and Navarro.....centre forward - any from Murray, Barnes and oh yeah nothing! I believe Mark-by-the-Sea mentioned Vassell earlier, that would be great as I always thought he put in 100% and could finish well. He could do as well as Forster did in the last few years of his career?

I thought Deeney could be one that we should take a look at. He's never worth half a million pounds though.

Beccio , lol would loved to be proved wrong, but cant see why on earth he would take a move from the Championship and a big club like Leeds to drop into league one and play at Withdean albeit for one season , nice idea though
