Nash joy at best yet

Chris Nash feels his career-best 184 was the reward for hard work.

The Sussex opener put the second division leaders on course for a sixth Championship win of the season against Leicestershire, who will resume today on 59-4 in their second innings still trailing by 116.

Nash was Sussex’s leading run scorer last season with 1,298 but yesterday’s century was only the second time he has passed 50 this season although he was badly dropped on 59.

He said: “I have felt in good nick for the last few weeks. I got 85 in the one-day match on Sunday, I have been working hard, made a few tweaks to my technique and it is nice that it has paid off.

“We knew they would come in hard in the first session and I had a bit of luck with the dropped catch but it nice good to cash in after that.”

“It has been hard work for opening batsmen generally this season. Sometimes I have had to play in a more attacking way than I normally would which can have its downfalls but hopefully now pitches are flattening out slightly I can make some big scores.”

Yasir Arafat made 58 and shared in a last-wicket stand of 52 with Corey Collymore before the pair teamed up to share four wickets with the new ball.

Nash added: “Ben Brown (38) did a really good job in only his third Championship game and our partnership got us into a good position. Then Yasir played well from ball one and that last wicket stand gave us some momentum.”

Top effort - big hundreds from the top 6 have been lacking all season so it is good to see somebody take responsibility and lead from the front.

Nash has been our best and most consistant batsman this year. With Alastair Cook playing so poorly this season, does Nash have an outside chance at international recognition?
