Eastbourne Borough's 100% record in pre-season came to an end as they went down 1-0 at home to Southend United.
Borough were overpowered by a big and energetic Southend side in the first half with the League Two outfit deserving their lead at half-time.
Mohsni Bilel made the breakthrough in the 26th minute when he rose above the Borough defence to head home a corner from Louie Soares.
Borough made nine substitutions in the second half and began to put the visitors under pressure with only a fine save from Shrimpers goalkeeper Rhys Evans denying Gary Elphick an equaliser in the 73rd minute.
Borough continue their pre-season build up for the new Blue Square Bet premier campaign at home to Lewes on Tuesday night before travelling to Eastleigh next Saturday.
