Bennett goal settles it

Albion enjoyed a 1-0 win over Aberdeen at Withdean today - but it should have been a lot more.

Elliott Bennett fired a spectacular winner into the top corner on 37 minutes but the Seagulls' domination deserved more reward.

Jamie Smith, who had a really lively afternoon, went closest to a second goal with a drive against the post.

Gordon Greer and sub Glenn Murray wasted good chances and keeper Mark Howard produced some decent saves.

Aberdeen almost nicked a 90th minute leveller when Michael Paton's volley clipped the post.

But, finishing apart, the Seagulls will be delighted with this run out in front of a crowd of 2,821, which included 516 away fans.

Albion: Poke (Walker 77); Calderon (Whing 77), Elphick, Greer, Painter; Navarro (Battipiedi 77), Kishishev (Dicker 69), Sparrow; Smith (Baz 77), Barnes (Murray 77), Bennett (Holroyd 77).

Nice result and sounds like a decent performance. Still need that 25 goal a season striker though.

It was only a friendly but the performance was encouraging. We controlled the game and the new acquisitions did well. Greer looked assured and Sparrow will score goals from midfield. Young Smith was energetic and inventive. We looked better upfront when Murray came on and Dicker then created a couple of nice openings from which we should have scored. A nice little cameo from Whing who looks much better now that he is passing the ball rather than lumping it.

We got better as the game went on and Aberdeen's attack was virtually non-existent - or was it just that our first choice defence looked very good...

Matt Sparrow showed his class and is going to be a top signing and one which is going to make Norwich wish they'd looked up North before getting the cheque book out !

Young Smith had a good game and looks like he will develop into a useful squad player - and I just hope I'm at the game when Christian Baz connects and scores with one of the overhead volleys he tried twice this afternoon but had blocked... Goal of the season coming up..!

And although not many people around me seem to notice, we also seem to have acquired one of the best defensive midfielders we've had for many years in Alan Navarro - the pass to put Elliott Bennett clear in the second half was brilliant!

Just LuaLua and one more top striker and this squad is looking very good... A fun season in prospect methinks...

glad someones finally appreciating Navarro, said last season all he was lacking was fitness, he's been a very under-rated player here and will be very influential this season.

Firstly thanks for the info on the game from those above.
Makes a change to read positive all round.
Must admit feel a little more confident now a team is emerging just feel along with I assume many others we need that 20+ goal scorer but the problem is so do a lot of other clubs. A little suprised one did not appear from our man Gus while abroad but the way the club seems to be heading I don't think it will take much to attract someone very soon.
