Poyet impressed by Seagulls

Gus Poyet believes his Albion side completed pre-season in style as they beat Aberdeen 1-0 today.

Elliott Bennett scored the 37th-minute winner but the Seagulls had plenty of chances to increase the tally.

Boss Poyet said: "I think it was a very good performance.

"It was a game where we were in control all the time.

"We didn't know too much about how Aberdeen would play.

"In the first ten minutes we had to have a look at the opposition.

"The players did that, they read the game and they started playing.

"For long periods in the first half we were controlling the game but not creating clear chances.

"We were always missing the last pass until we started having shots.

"Then the goal came. I think in the second half we had plenty of chances to score another goal.

"When you're 1-0 anything can happen but I was very pleased with the performance."

I thought we were excellent. Matt Sparrow looks an excellent signing. We do need more options up front but that was an impressive performance today.

We were very good today. There is no doubt about it, our future under Gus is an exciting one. Up the Albion!

Excellent performance, and good debuts from everyone. Baz looks like a potential "Cult Hero" type, quick, skillful and not afraid to try things. Two or three more quality signings and we will have every chance this season.

Yeah mate, I couldn't agree with you more. Sparrow had 4 very good attempts on goal from long range, and time and again, won the ball in midfield. Very very promising. We did seem to be lacking up front until Murray came on, and The Argies looked promising, especially Baz, with looking for little tricks and 2 overhead kick attempts! Greer looked solid at the back, Poke good performance in goal, Smith had a great game and Bennett? what can you say?! The only disappointment was again Holroyd, shooting horribly wide when through on goal. That aside, it was a great performance from The Albion. With LuaLua and a good striker, things could be very good for The Albion this season! In Gus we trust!

Good confidence boost this win - is it the first win of your friendlies.
Glad GG is settling in well, should help your sort your defence out, won't score the goals though you seem to lack.

Great performance, good passing & teamwork. Nice to see midfield having shots. Sparrow looks the business. Bennets goal was well taken. However, Holroyd is an embarrassment in this side. Makes me squirm every time he gets near the ball (thankfully not often). Gus please loan him out to a league 2 team (if you can find one) to take him for the rest of the season.

same rant as ever. Becoming a bit of a one trick pony. Never mind the positive stuff let's concentrate on sending another player the same way as Davies.

One-nil doesn’t do the performance credit: one of the best performances we’ve seen since the days of Coppell and possibly before. It may have only been a friendly but the style and cohesiveness was great to watch. Fantastic entertainment for all of us who turned-up at the Withdean, yesterday. Speaking to those who went o Portugal, it seems this performance against Aberdeen continued in the same vein as the Sunderland match. Great to see the ball on the ground, short passing and, most of all, telling movement off the ball. The hoofing that hopefully is now consigned to the past was not always the fault of the player with the ball at his feet – often there was no one free to receive the ball and no one moving into space. Clearly Gus has rightly focussed on HOW we play, and it looks like it could pay dividends. Other managers in this league appear to have worried firstly about WHO they have in their squad.
One-nil does, however, highlight the most urgent need for a natural, proven goal scorer in the team – there were that many chances created yesterday. I’m sorry “farside, amsterdam” but “fozziesheadband
is right – Holroyd can’t hit the target in the warm-up, let alone in the match. I heard the kids in the crowd singing “how wide do you want the goal, how wide do you want the goal…” after he failed from the edge of the six-yard box. The kids are not wrong – they have no preconceptions. While we should never say “never”, I’m afraid Chris looks well out of his depth and his best chance of a goal will be if the ball ricochets off him.
Once we’ve added a class striker to the squad this season could be the most promising for a very long time. Kishishev and Sparrow add genuine quality and creativity in midfield. The Argentineans bring flair and a touch of excitement to the team. Next Saturday will be the first real test of our team. The joy of Gus is that I’m sure he’ll stick to the game plan he has started. They’ll be times when the plan may not work and the meatheads of League 1 will make some think twice about passing football – that will be when BHA will need our unwavering support. Heck, it’s only Aug 1st – high summer – but I’m really looking forward to this season like no other for some years. Can’t wait for next Saturday.

Love the advert for Sky HD involving Eric Cantona ....
The final scene shows him on one of the greens of a golf course .... a golf ball on the ground just in front of him is swooped upon by a seagull, who promptly beaks the ball and flies off .... the backing 'commentary' chuckles in disbelief that something like this should happen during a big occasion golf match.
Cantona looks up at the escaping bird in sheer disdain and simply says .... "Seagulls!" ....
Priceless! It is a sign of comments to be heard from opposition managers this coming season .... after Albion have flown away with a match and won comfortably ....
Just like the seagull in the advert, this Albion team will have far too much 'bite' for everyone else over the campaign ....
.
Come on you Seagulls!

I know it's old ground before the moaners start, but we never should have let "Fozzie" go!

You HAVE to be kidding about Akinfenwa!!! He's about the size of Brighton!

The fact he's joined Gillingham (I think) says it all....knows where the net is but at L2 level.....he wouldn't have a hope in hell of keeping up with play let alone out-witting L1 defences and besides we hope to be another level above that sooner than later.

If we kept Fozzie, we would have sacrificed team spirit and morale.

There are others who will replace that aging striker, but Poyet's command and authority coupled with that vital team spirit is IRREPLACABLE. Now place let it go...just as Albion let him go.
