Poyet plays down promotion chances

Albion boss Gus Poyet has warned fans he cannot guarantee a play-off place with his updated squad.

Poyet rates the group of players he has assembled as above average but is making no promises about delivering a top six finish.

The Seagulls face MK Dons at Withdean on Saturday in their first league game since the August transfer window slammed shut.

They signed winger Kazenga LuaLua back on loan from Newcastle and 18-year-old Norwegian striker Torbjorn Agdestein on deadline day and followed that up with another forward 24 hours later after Spaniard Fran Sadanza cancelled his contract with Dundee United to become a free agent.

Poyet had previously drafted in former Chelsea defensive midfielder Liam Bridcutt on a short-term contract to deputise for the injured Alan Navarro.

The Uruguayan, asked to assess the business he has done, told The Argus: “If you gave me one to ten I would say seven, seven-and-a-half. That means it is not ten. I do dream, like everyone, but I don’t lie to people and at the moment the team is seven-and-a-half.

“We are trying to get better than last year. That means top ten and from there we’ll see. Nothing has changed in terms of saying now we will get promoted.”

'We are trying to get better than last year...' Oh dear. How quickly the target has moved from just before the start of the season...

Although it was a disappointing transfer window, I would rather the Albion build slowly within a budget than land themselves with a massive wage bill that is unsustainable with the current limitations of playing at withdean.
The landscape has been changed by other super-rich owners being prepared to bankroll League One clubs.
Be patient folks...

I think Gus is being a realist, but if the squad can string together 3 or 4 wins on the trot then Gus will see things differently.

Win our game in hand and wer'e second, MK Dons is a big game and could define the season.....

Disappointing. The chairman said that automatic promotion is the objective. I have consistently said since that day that we arent strong enough. Now the manager admits that the same. Getting out of the 3rd tier should be totally achievable. Not enough ambition.

Exactly.....Gus says top 10, he then hopefully secures a spot in the the top 6. He can then say he, and the team, have over achieved.

I cannot believe the whingers on here sometimes.

What manager in his right mind would publicly guarantee promotion? I'd be more worried if he had than I am reading this.

Such statements mean nothing. Watch us play. We're all right. It's a tough league and we will be there or thereabouts.

what pees me off is that every one who has a different opinion is a whinger, yes no one can g,tee promotion but saying the AIM is promotion in two years, then a top six finish now a top ten finish or better than last season is a bit of a defeatist statement

Wrong sorry. The chairman said that once then once poyet had shown what was needed in terms of players bloom retracted a little bit. We cannot live beyond what we can afford, we can however build step by step. I may of escaped your notice but the team currently top if the table could go into administration, wonder why? Stop hanging onto the words of one statement and get real. If we do go up, even better. So yes you are moaning because as yet, there is nothing to moan about. £95 million stadium and a good young manager building the club from the bottom up not good enough for you then wiseguy.

Snodger claims that the club lacks ambition. How anyone can look at the lovely stadium emerging fron the downs can say that is beyond me. To further claim that getting out of this division is 'totally acheiveable' makes the whole thing sound like a shoe- in. It may have escaped some people's notice but the club has been involved in a relegation dog fight for the last two seasons. Promotion wiil eventually happen, but possibly not this season.
It would present a more balanced picture of what is happening at the club if contributors to this site could avoid denying that any progress has occurred as far as building a team capable of challenging promotion is concerned, and those who insist on treating the present manager as some sort of diety.

league 1 is such a strong league now - the quality difference to the championship not nearly like it used to be and there are some good teams in this league that have a similar ambition to us. I think we will be top 8 at the end of the season with a good chance of making the playoffs. If we can make the playoffs I will be happy - no matter what the outcome it will set us up for a great first season at the amex

Can't see what all the fuss is about to be honest........

B&HA have played 4 league games! Its Early September! Lots to happen from now until May, including another transfer window.....which may mean some go (free-ing the wage bill) to allow some in....that could be 3 more quality players!

Who knows apart from maybe Gypsy Lil and her mystic ball (or maybe Mark by the Sea) ????

I for one will be happy for a top half finish this year and then launch an assualt on L1 from Fortress Amex.....

Rome wasn't built in a day / success isn't acheived overnight.

Give it time.

Yes! All we can Hope, Wish and Dream of, is to finish higher than last year.
On the 6th of August he stated ..and I quote..""I think it's enough to get up. I'm convinced. " with Tony Bloom stating ""We're aiming for the top two but it's going to be very difficult. I am confident we will do successfully on the pitch this season."

But...now..anything above 13th eh? Ah! That is not applause! It is Bubbles Bursting"

In Gus we Trust (To finish higher than we did last year)

I do wonder if people some people ever stop and think about how difficult it is to sign quality players. Ones who will actually improve our squad.

Quality players are by their very nature will be in demand by other possibly more attractive clubs.
Maybe the transfer fee is outside our budget or unrealistic.
Maybe the player wages are outside our budget or unrealistic.
Maybe the club don't want to sell.
Maybe the player doesn't want to leave.
Maybe the player doesn't want to uproot their family and come to the South Coast.

There's loads of reasons why deals can't or don't happen. The failure to sign more players isn't about lack of ambition, it's about our manager and club being run in the right way. And I'm for that every time.

Yes a quality striker can make a difference, goes without saying, whether we have that squad yet is a different matter, Gus has not anticipated as many difficulties in the transfer dealings costs wise so he is telling how he sees it. I have priorities i wnt to achieve this year, does not mean i will and it will not be for want of trying and that is just life, i am sorry but i am off topic at all, you have stated it is a dfeatest statement, i would say things change and need to be assessed all the time, that is football.

All of the same problems applied at the time when the chairman said about automatic promotion. The club was selling season tickets at the time of course.

what gus says to andy naylor, and what he expects from his side are a million miles apart, if gus says we are certain for promotion,, then its pressure on him and the players. i expect top 4, yes that will depend on how many injuries we get, and what gus brings in the loan and jan window.. things are going in right direction, and any day now the club will smash someone 5-0 and shake the division up.

In the wrong hobby then, Football is now business as well. Accept it. I do not accept the griping at this stage, fact is, you know players/managers come and go and then spout theold i told you so bull**** when they are gone. 4th Bottom with 3 games to go, that is probably a time to moan. The everything is wrong all the time brigade have been at it for yrs and it has been the people year in year out to a degree. Still, nobody has a budget to deal with, Poyet is doing his best with the budget and Bloom is setting sustainable budgets at this stage, if that is wrong, then you need to re-assess your expectations

I believe Gus's comments are aimed at Bloom as much as the supporters, i.e. you get what you pay for mate. To my mind, he's no longer totally happy with the financial support that's been available for the team building - and has revised his optimism levls accordingly in light of his struggles in the market. It's not the supporters fault that the club was talking up it's own chances of promotion a couple of months ago, but now seems to be having second thoughts...
