Chris Nash hopes his strong finish to the season will get him another chance with England.
The Sussex opener, who made an unbeaten 122 on the first day of the Championship match against Northamptonshire, trained with the England Performance Squad last November but was unable to go on the tour to United Arab Emirates after breaking a thumb.
England expect to name about 50 players for the Ashes and Lions tours later this month and fast-finishing Nash did his chances of inclusion no harm with his third Championship hundred in five games as Sussex reached 236-2 in reply to Northants’ 125.
He said: “I only need 12 more runs to get 1,000 for the season for the second year running and one-day cricket has gone well for me too.
“I would love to go away with the Lions. I still have another couple of innings left and if I can finish with another century we will see where it takes us. Having scored two big hundreds I’d like to make this another one.”
Sussex will clinch promotion today if they score 350 in their first innings although the second division title is their aim.
Nash added: “We want to finish strongly and go up as champions. We were not thinking of getting promoted here and then coasting, we want to win our last two games and go up with some momentum again for next year.
“So far it has gone well. I was chatting to some of their guys and they know they are up against some world-class bowlers in Arafat, Collymore and Panesar while James Anyon has come in for the last two games and done phenomenally. We have looked probing even on good wickets.”
