Sussex are back in the first division of the County Championship.
They sealed promotion at the first time of asking at Hove today when they reached 350 in their first innings against Northamptonshire to ensure they could not be overtaken by third-placed Gloucestershire.
Sussex looked to be cruising to their target at lunch when they were 316-2.
But the county then lost five wickets for 11 runs after lunch, three of them in four balls to David Lucas including Chris Nash (169) and Murray Goodwin and Matt Prior for ducks.
But Ollie Rayner got the biggest cheer of the day when he took a single to mid-on after a mis-field by Jack Brooks.
It ensures that the top counties such as Yorkshire, Lancashire, Durham and Notts will all be on the fixture list next season.
