Coach Mark Robinson has admitted his Sussex players weren’t even aware when they clinched promotion yesterday.
The county will be back in division one of the Championship after just a year’s absence after they reached 350 and secured eight bonus points against Northamptonshire at Hove yesterday to put third-placed Gloucestershire out of reach.
Robinson said: “Our lads weren’t even aware of it. I was sitting with some of our supporters and it was only when I went into the dressing room and told the boys that we were up when we got 350 that they knew.
“We were just trying to win the game and were oblivious to the other matches going on and rivals dropping points.”
Sussex will win the title if they go on to beat Northamptonshire, who will resume today on 48-2 in their second innings still 208 behind, and Glamorgan fail to defeat Surrey.
And then the partying can start, according to Robinson.
He added: “The first aim was to go up but the fact that we have given ourselves a bit of distance between ourselves and the pack means the objective now is to win the title.
“I feel a bit sad that the celebrations yesterday were a bit low key. We have won ten trophies in 11 years and six in the last four and perhaps we have got a bit blasé.
“But we shouldn’t take winning any trophy for granted. There are some good teams in this division who would love to be where we are.”
