Head coach Nick Greenwood highlighted George Purcell's penalty miss as the pivotal moment in Eastbourne Borough's 3-1 defeat at home to Kettering Town.
Borough were trailing to Brett Solkhon's early goal when Purcell's spot kick was saved by Willy Gueret in the 60th minute.
Kettering went on to score twice on the counter attack through Nick McKoy and Marcus Kelly before Jamie Taylor grabbed an injury time consolation.
Greenwood said: "George kicked the ground before making contact with the ball. It was a shame because the way he struck his free kick against Crawley was one of the cleanest strikes you could ever wish to see.
"It was at a crucial part of the game but when you are down the wrong end of the table these things go against you. We dominated the early stages of the second half and if that had gone in it might have been different.
"Instead they went on to score on the counter attack and we are 2-0 down instead of 1-1."
