Murray Goodwin was happy to play through the pain after leading Sussex Sharks into the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 Cup with an unbeaten century.

Goodwin made 100 not out as Sussex secured a home tie against Lancashire Lightning next month with an 11 runs win over Surrey Lions.

The 38-year-old suffered an asthma attack and needed his inhaler and towards the end of his 59-ball innings he smashed the ball onto his toe and was unable to field during the Surrey innings.

He said: “I inside-edged a yorker from Dirk Nannes onto my toe which will probably need drilling now and earlier I needed a puff of inhaler but I was fine. I suppose as you get older you get a bit short of breath!"

Goodwin and Matt Prior put on 76 in 49 balls to set up Sussex's win with Goodwin, unusually, the aggressor.

He added: "It was nice to go in when we were 12-2 and build a partnership with Matt that was about trying to be sensible and targeting certain bowlers.

"It is unusual to see me ahout-scoring Matt but you have days like that. I had a game plan, stuck to it and I'm pleased it worked."

Goodwin believes home advantage can prove vital when Sussex bid for their third appearance in Finals Day. The quarter-final will be on either August 6,7 or 8.

He added: "In terms of cricket it helps but you still have to play well because we are coming up against a good Lancashire team.

"But we enjoy playing here at Hove and it is good for the club from a revenue point of view and of course for our supporters, who were great again."
