Gus Poyet was fuming over another Portuguese referee tonight as Kazenga LuaLua survived an injury scare.

The winger limped off in the second half of the 2-1 defeat at Olhanense after hurting the same left ankle he broke at Hartlepool last season in an awful challenge by defender Mauricio.

The centre-half's sly stamp off-the-ball was punished with a yellow card by referee Eugenio Arez when it clearly should have been red.

Poyet, sent off for protesting at the referee in Wednesday's 1-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain, was incandescent with rage.

He went on to the pitch to both gesticulate at Arez and to hold his players back.

Poyet said: "He should have been sent off. It looks like in Portugal now every time an English team is coming they need to kick you.

"We nearly got Kazenga injured by a disgraceful tackle. He really went to hurt him."

More LuaLua magic had earlier set up Matt Sparrow to give Albion a 50th-minute lead but, once he departed, an own goal by Romain Vincelot (76) and fine finish on the break by sub Salvador (89) gave Olhanense victory.

Vincelot chested past keeper Casper Ankergren from a cross.

Poyet said: "It's difficult for us to take. There was another mistake at the back. We need to stop that."
