Buckley grabs more glory

Will Buckley fires in another winner (photos Simon Dack) Will Buckley fires in another winner (photos Simon Dack)

Will Buckley fired another late winner as Albion beat Leicester 1-0 at The Amex today.

Buckley produced a superbly controlled volley beyond the far post on 90 minutes to convert a sumptuous lobbed cross from substitute Vicente.

Albion then survived six added minutes during which Neil Danns was shown a second yellow for bringing down Vicente.

Leicester had also lost sub Nathan Delfouneso to injury by that stage, leaving them with eight fit men for the final moments.

Two men had already been dismissed by then in a game which took a long time to come alive.

Leicester striker Jermaine Beckford was shown a straight red - on the advice of the assistant referee - on 53 minutes for an off-the-ball incident after he appeared to approach the grounded Lewis Dunk.

Albion failed to break down the ten men and numbers were evened up on 85 minutes after Matt Sparrow's challenge on Ben Marshall earned him instant dismissal.

The Seagulls' best moment when they had 11 versus ten saw Buckley fire an angled drive straight at City keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Albion threw on new boys Sam Vokes and Joe Mattock during the second half but it was a game short on chances.

Ashley Barnes had the ball in the net with a well-taken shot on the turn on 26 minutes but the flag was up for offside.

Barnes later nodded a good chance across goal, with Craig Mackail-Smith just unable to divert the ball into the net, and Alan Navarro headed just wide of the top corner.

Leicester also had their first-half moments with Peter Brezovan holding a Paul Konchesky free-kick and David Nugent heading inches wide from a corner.

Seems to have been a frantic game---according to FINAL SCORE on BBC--shame about Sparrow--getting too many REDS this season. But a good win and only a point from play offs. Good--at last--to see Vicente on the pitch and--seemingly---mak
ing a good contribution. Lets hear from some who were at the match?? Well done Albion!!

Not a good match we did not take advantage of playing against ten men, predictable as we did not have either Noone or Lua on the field. The last minute goal was fortunate for us, we did not deserve three points.

and to add to what gee jay said, not an easy one definitely. I've been a glass half full with most games this season but was nervous about today. Leicester played us off the park last time. I think today we proved we can mix quality and fight.

We've been through all this after the Forest match.
We created more chances than Leicester, and scored with one of them.
We absolutely deserved to win!

We may not have "deserved" three points but since when did that matter? The goal was quality and we are now just five points from the probable safety target. A good result at Leeds and we might be thinking realistically about challenging for a play-off place. All-in-all a more than impressive season so far.

First home match I've missed all season, struck down with blessed man-flu and lost the vocals, gutted to have missed that winner, what is it with Buckley and cracking them in before the North Stand?! Followed the live tweets via the argus, seemed like we didn't really get going that much, they said GP was getting frustrated at lack of forward progression from the players. Big CMS fan, but I was thinking midweek he should've been rested today, seems the harder he's trying the worse it's getting in front of goal, maybe too much expectation on himself following 35 goals and big price tag? Can't fault the guy otherwise, but just feel he needs time out to re-vitalise.
How did Vokes and Mattock shape up? Vicente goes from zero to hero in an instant. Funny old game, cracking result, a point off play-offs in 1st week of Feb, what odds on that back in the summer. And Mr Buckley looks like being one of the steals of the season. Happy days :o)

To all those that have questioned Vicente's commitment to the cause, thought his contract should be torn up, believed he was here just taking the Albion's money and not fussed about playing, and doubted he would ever be fit again, I hope you are enjoying a nice meal of humble pie tonight.

He may only have been on for a short amount of time, but he really made his mark. The pass for Buckley was world-class, and the way he ran towards us in the North Stand was a joy to behold.

Say what you like about his fitness, mental state, or ambition, but that guy was the reason we won today. Great, great finish by Buckers, but the build-up play by Vicente made it possible.

I really enjoyed the game and I have to say at no time did I think we would lose but equally I did wonder if & when we were going to score. Leicester surprised me that they didn't try harder to close the team down in the final 3rd but were very good at blocking shots in and around the penalty area.

Should have been a couple up at 1/2 time but we deserved to win.

No complaints with the bookings and sending off for Brighton, but this remains an area we need to address.

As I have commented before I do feel we are on a roll and there is every possibility of auto promo.

Great result, even if not a great match. Delighted with the 3 points. Thought the game was spoiled by the red cards. Neither Beckford or Sparrow deserved to go, but at least 10 a-side creates more space on the pitch. Vicente made a difference against tired legs. Personally I would have liked to have seen Noone out there and I would love to see him and Buckley on opposite flanks. CMS makes some great runs but hardly ever gets fed. Would love to see our midfield play him the ball as he makes his turns and hits the gaps. He works so hard and deserves the ball being delivered as he hits top speed. He's always having to check his runs as too many of our midfielders play the ball sidewards. I wish they'd look forward

Not the best game in the world but there was plenty of quality on show in places.

By all accounts Beckford's red was a farce. Apparently the lino wrongly perceived he'd kicked Dunk's head as he was floorbound....mate says his foot merely was placed near his head as he reached to pay his head in that usual unsinister way players do after a challenge.

Sparrow's red looked stonewall...a silly foul that will cost him a place at Anfield, just as he was arriving at peak form. Disappointing!

However, enjoyed the game and in particular the final 15 mins when we pressed and then scored a delighted winner...that legend-in-the-making Buckers again! Great build-up, especially that exquisite chipped cross from The Dagger on the right. Going absolutely mental behind the goal (at the back) marked a great way for my loan debut to The North Stand :0)

Buckley had caused all sorts of probs, yet wasn't at his best, but Vicente is an honour to behold in our fantastic cathedral of tippy tappy.

Very good debut for Mattock, who looked lively, sharp and tricky - beating the RB on more than one occasion in his relatively short shift.

Vokes so nearly reached Bridcutt's sharp shot on goal but liked promising overall.

I just wish Buckers had squared for CMS instead of firing at Schmeichel from the angle. He would have had the goal at his mercy.

Finally I heard rumour of some trouble caused by Leicester fans at either or both of Brighton and Lewes stations at some time around 2pm. Something about charging the platforms and forcing fans down onto the track. Anyone able to shed any light on this? Wonder if it's just Chinese whispers.

This said these individual performances will attract scouts and create problems holding on to the likes of Nooney, Buckley and Bridcutt. The only way we can possible persuade them to stay, if we are not promoted this year, is to go all out for promotion next season and hope they want to show some loyalty and be part of it. The problem is promotion can never be guaranteed. I guess we will have to live with this problem of keeping our players indefinitely now!

Cheers for the feedback golddene, saw the move for the winner on Sky, quality one-touch stuff so late into a hard game. Pleasing to hear about Mattock, and thought Vokes took his chance at the end really well (should have counted when advantage was on after the foul on Vicente).

Totally agree about the midfield players not being alert to CMS' runs. Just before he was substituted, I clearly saw him gesticulating in total frustration at another failed opportunity by a midfield player to pick him out. CMS should have been on the pitch with Vicente as i'm sure the extra attacking impetus and invention would have suited him perfectly, and what better time to get him scoring again.
until Vicente came on, there was a total lack of creativity from midfield. most of the passes go out to the wings.

OK the team played well defensively, and it was a highly competitive and entertaining game, with a great finish to it, but we are crying out for intelligent passes FORWARD from midfield to CMS. At last we got it from Vicente - a touch of class with a great finish from Buckley, but CMS WAS NOT THERE TO PROFIT FROM THE EXTRA SPACE.

This time the red wasn't for violence or petulance. Sparrow competed for a 50:50 or 40:60 ball, with no intention of hurting the man, and in the current climate saw a red.
Gave the ref the chance to even up the numbers, and no, the opponent wasn't hurt, and kept peeping to see the red card being given, before being fully fit soon afterwards.

Good game, but not great - Not sure why Bridcutt got MOM, broke the play up but his passing was woeful today - never looked forward and very slow to distribute the ball. Can someone also explain to me why Barnes did not go for gaol with his free header 6 yards out in the first half - instead choosing to head it back across goal to CMS who, even with his pace, had no chance? Anyway - good win, but a bit nervy at times - shame we didnt have noone or KLL on the bench as i think with the space we had at times they would have ripped them apart

I disagree, it has been too easy for peeps to knock Vicente. He was always going to make a difference and the frustration of his injuries has been all too evident. Cabin Fever, thanks, I agree with you, we need to get behind all members of the team. Gus and Tony are not mugs, if he had been swinging the lead, Vicente would have been long gone. Those to knock the club will disappear very soon. Up until today I had hoped, now I believe, the Gus Bus is now in top gear, steaming on to auto promotion. Andy Naylor you are wrong, not only can Albion catch Southampton but we can steal at least 2nd place and it's Vicente who is going to make that happen.

We didn't. Should have had far more energy in attack after Beckford went. He actually struck Dunk after fouling him when Dunk was lying at the side of the pitch. There was no urgency to our play, we lacked a spark. Hopefully its the situation Ferguson often describes when he says even when we don't play well we win. Also Leicester's fans were brilliant for their club often silencing our own. We need some better anthems to sing/shout - perhaps Norman Cook can help identify something fitting. A good result and my pie wasn't too dry.

Not being miserable or precious, just think that's some people's attitude and opinion of Vicente is unfair. And comments such as yours don't help.

We absolutely deserved to win!
It was a good match and we deserved to win it. One goal disallowed for offside, one disallowed as ref failed to play advantage and a exciting late goal made by a brilliant chip from our Spanish superstar and scored by our current goal hero in the last minute.
We had more chances and took one, they didn't. We finished with more players after three were sent off. We had two home debuts and a returning hero as we moved within two points of the playoffs. The winner was thrilling and the players took the applause and chants like we had won a key battle towards promotion. I got exactly what I went for today and sometimes wonder exactly what some people expect when they go to the Amex on a Saturday afternoon. I had a cracking time thank you and yes, we deserved to win.

Not a good match we did not take advantage of playing against ten men, predictable as we did not have either Noone or Lua on the field. The last minute goal was fortunate for us, we did not deserve three points.

Exactly! Sometimes I wonder what match some of these so called Albion fans were watching!

As I said also on the other post-match thread:

Greer, Dunk, Bridcutt, Reyes? Mattock? Forster-Caskey, Vicente The Dagger, Noone, LuaLua, Buckley, CMS and possibly some of the others could all easily form part of a half-decent PL squad. We are building nicely towards that eventual future! Dont know about you lot but i'm blimmin' lovin' this season! All those home cup draws to help us settle into our Grand Design of a new home, the tie at 'Pool, the signing of £m+ players and the sublime if occasional cameos from world class Vicente + the great quality of food, drink, merchandise (inevitably award-winning!!!) programmes and the ever increasing camaraderie im enjoying from the growing list of people I seem to know at the footy is making for an incredible feel good factor....and I don't think our footy has reached anywhere near its peak yet either!

How's it for you guys?

A really tight game between two in-form teams. Leicester can consider themselves a little unlucky to lose - they proved themselves a good side especially with 10 men. Tactically we were spot on again, also all three substitutions were the right call from Gus. We struggled to break them down once Beckford was sent off but that's football. It is not always going to be like the Southampton game.....Brighton have found a certain way of playing this season, especially at home against the bigger teams with arguably better and more expensive players. If certain fans have not worked that out by now, you have to wonder what they have been looking at. I am sure they would be the first to moan if we were playing a wide open 4-4-2 formation with two wingers and we were losing 4-2 every week......I suspect the line that Gus is being tactically naive would come to the fore. The first season a The Amex has been a spectacular success to this point - even if they finish roughly where they are now it will still have been a huge achievement.

Phantom you have it exactly right. Gus is bar far the most tactically astute manager in this league - constantly achieving results with (on paper) players of supposedly lesser quality. The team ethic shone through again yesterday, and the substitutions were made at the right time. Should be an exciting end to the season, but even if we don't make the play-offs, the future looks bright if we can keep this management team in place.

If we play as we did at the start of the season in the remaining games then I think we'll make the play offs. I'm sure you are right in what you say about Gus and if you are he needs to instill confidence in the players so that we attack, which we did not do yesterday. I don't think they need to be scared of any Championship team after beating Sunderland and Newcastle this season, so start playing without fear.
