Navarro grabs late winner

Alan Navarro fired an added-time winner as Albion maintained their flying start to 2012.

The midfielder connected with a low drive from the edge of the box to clinch a 2-1 win at Leeds.

It was his first goal for the club.

Craig Mackail-Smith earlier scored his first goal since November to put Albion ahead only for the hosts to reply quickly.

Mackail-Smith was left on the bench but struck just three minutes after coming on for Sam Vokes.

His close range finish on 77 minutes from a superb Vicente corner seemed to have sent Albion on course for a first win at Elland Road in 26 years.

The hosts levelled from a flag kick of their own just two minutes later with Luciano Becchio glancing a header gently inside the unguarded far post.

But Navarro settled it in the first of four added minutes after Vicente threaded through a pass.

Albion, cheered on by 947 travelling fans in a crowd of 23,171, arguably deserved their win in a contest which took a long time to burst into life.

The first half was devoid of goalmouth action, although Gordon Greer did well to challenge Becchio as the home striker looked set to head home Robert Snodgrass's first cross of the game.

Albion took a while to get anything going in attack but, when they did, Navarro saw his volley held by Andy Lonergan, who later pushed away a swerving 25-yarder from Liam Bridcutt.

Lonergan denied both Joe Mattock and Vokes in a hectic start to the second half which also saw Mattock make a crucial challenge in front of his own goal to thwart Becchio.

This is the result that proves we are genuine title contenders.

Great substitutions by Gus, what a bench we had and what a huge difference Vicente made. If he carries on like this there is going to be a lot of humble pie being consumed.

Great result and the perfect set up for next weekend. I think Vincente's introduction as an impact player in the final 25-35 mins is ideal. Good to see CMS get back on the scoresheet too. Fantastic tonic for everyone.

Even if I wanted to find anything negative, which I don’t, it would be impossible to grumble about or criticise this club on all levels.

My only advice to TB & Gus is to keep up your great work.

How good is this season!!!

Brilliant result today and definitely in the mix for the play-offs. What a run-in this is going to be.

Some fans have been frustrated by the absence of Vicente, and are entitled to air their frustrations, but I doubt any of them questioned his class or the desire to see him in a Brighton shirt.

Wow, what a result, just can't believe the number of late winners we seem to manage, and what a delight having such a bench to draw on. And as for Vicente, you couldn't make it up! (although finding all the holier than thou, 'humble pie' demanders almost as annoying as the original snipers).

Injured players always receive sympathy, and our hopes for a rapid recovery.
In the case of Vicente, there seemed to be no specific problem, and this, hardly surprisingly, attracted speculation.
Some of Gus's comments weren't much help in clarifying things, in fact quite the opposite.
Talk of humble pie is nonsense.
Can we finally draw a line under this?

Promotion means a huge increase in income and TB is NOT Archer! He won't pocket the profits and sell us out from under. An asset stripper he definitely is not. If we should get promoted in successive years, I know he will move heaven and earth to keep us there without bankrupting the club. He's an honourable man and loves the club as much as we do. He and Gus would build a team we would be even more proud of than we already are. Awesome times.

Amazing result however, honestly not too suprised seeing the line-up and bench we had today. Very likely to be playing at Wembley for a PL spot in a couple of months time.

Vicente is pure class and his footballing skills seem to have a positive effect on the rest of the team. I've now got a very sore throat after cheering the lads onto victory despite the stewards trying their best to ruin the atmosphere in the away section.

If we remain in the the Championship for another season, which isn't out of the question, we will be competing with three relegated clubs who will receive parachute payments of £48 million pounds over four seasons. (£16 million in each of the first two years, and £8 million in each of the second two.)
Automatic promotion is going to be more difficult than ever, and the lottery of the play-offs might again seem the most likely route.
Much of the hard work this season has been done, generally in difficult circumstances, so not going for it would seem to be unthinkable.
In 2010, a leading accountancy group calculated that reaching the top flight is worth around £90 million to Championship teams, even if they go straight back down.
A revenue increase of £40 million can be expected from the first season in the Prem', comprising of television broadcast revenue, and also higher gate receipts and commercial revenue.
If we go up and make an immediate return, we will be one of the clubs benefitting from the new parachute payments.
Personally, I favour the promotion scenario this season, even at the risk of becoming a yo-yo club.
Consolidation is for the Premiership, not the Championship.

Elliot Bennett looked very influential yesterday, for Norwich, which started me thinking. Very few players, from either side, had any experience of the premiership yet both teams are doing very well so far. Yes, the second half of the season can find out the newly promoted sides but they look handily placed in February.
We just don't know how players will react to the top flight until they get there. A few additions with the class of Vicente could transform the squad. In Gus we trust!

Good comments Gordongull which I think reflect what a number of supporters including myself felt.
We were frustrated BECAUSE we recognised Vicente's class and felt that was what the midfield was lacking. Seeing the impact he has had with three goals created from 3 assists in the last two games says it all. What seemed to be missing when Vicente wasn't playing was for the midfield to consistently make the type of 'killer' pass that Vicente is capable of.
I was relieved to see that Poyet didn't gamble with his fitness yesterday and started him on the bench.
I do hope JFC gets some more game time since he would learn alot by playing with Vicente.
Finally I am looking forward to Poyet bringing in another midfielder as he said he wanted to in September so that Vicente can concentrate on being the attacking creative midfielder we have missed.

The only downside to our strength in midfield, as you suggest, seems to be fewer opportunities for JFC.

Not just influential, he was involved in the lead up to one goal and threaded an exquisite pass for an assist. Let's hope we start getting Vicente for the full 90 soon and he can start doing the same for us regularly in every game!
