Proud Poyet praises his matchwinners

Alan Navarro watches his shot hit the back of the net Alan Navarro watches his shot hit the back of the net

Gus Poyet praised his side's character – and their supersubs - after seeing them grab a late 2-1 win at Leeds today.

The Seagulls saw Craig Mackail-Smith's first goal since November quickly cancelled out by Luciano Becchio.

But Alan Navarro secured the points with a shot from the edge of the box in added time.

Mackail-Smith ended his goal drought shortly after coming off the bench.

Fellow second-half sub Vicente set it up with a super corner and was also involved in the build-up to Navarro's winner.

Boss Poyet said: “I needed to change the dynamics with Macca. I needed to find a solution and I had to make a hard decision not to play him.

“I'm so pleased he was the one who went on and scored.

“They have got quality players. They have got Snodgrass, Becchio, players who, at any time even if you are defending at your best, can score.

“But I think we were terrific after they scored. Any other team here at Leeds, especially defending that goal (at the Kop end), maybe would go down and lose the game.

“But we kept passing and kept believing and I thought today, as well as Macca, the difference was made by Vicente.

“The delivery, the passing, the ability to find spaces, to make us play calm and to make us win the game. We need him 90-minute fit.”

Poyet said Will Buckley was taken off at half-time as “nothing important but a precaution” and admitted his side, showing four changes, took time to settle.

He was thrilled for Navarro, who scored his first goal for the club.

The boss said: “I thought he had never scored before. He tells me he scored for MK Dons against Oldham.

“That's a long time ago. It's his first goal for me as a manager and he deserved it because he had a great game.”

focus focus focus - three points on Tuesday and we are really in the mix.
Then we can go and enjoy ourselves at Anfield - a great day out for an amazing 6000 fans. I never thought we would sell that many for a Sunday teatime kick off a long way from home but I didn't count on such brilliant supporters.

Great atmosphere from large Albion contingent...not squashed into tiny wedge as in past two visits.
Thought we were always threatening ...just last touch missing in first half. Two well-matched teams, but our subs bench, and Gus's use of it, was the difference. Quality touches from Vicente and Reyes a joy to behold! Great team effort.
With Liverpool in the doghouse tonight, we should feel very positive about the big Anfield day out!

Great win today, good to hear that Gus seems to be happy here but nevertheless, I would prefer I didn't have to read quotes like this from him:
"I say there is no chance , but it is difficult to say when the place is so spectacular for me.

"It would be great. I would love, in the future, to manage Leeds. I would love to come back, but at the moment the timing is not quite right. For those who want me back, I am sorry."

If we remain in the the Championship for another season, which isn't out of the question, we will be competing with three relegated clubs who will receive parachute payments of £48 million pounds over four seasons. (£16 million in each of the first two years, and £8 million in each of the second two.)
Automatic promotion is going to be more difficult than ever, and the lottery of the play-offs might again seem the most likely route.
Much of the hard work this season has been done, generally in difficult circumstances, so not going for it would seem to be unthinkable.
In 2010, a leading accountancy group calculated that reaching the top flight is worth around £90 million to Championship teams, even if they go straight back down.
A revenue increase of £40 million can be expected from the first season in the Prem', comprising of television broadcast revenue, and also higher gate receipts and commercial revenue.
If we go up and make an immediate return, we will be one of the clubs benefitting from the new parachute payments.
Personally, I favour the promotion scenario this season, even at the risk of becoming a yo-yo club.
Consolidation is for the Premiership, not the Championship.

The only downside today was reading a typically honest Gus interview in the Yorkshire Post saying how he would love to manage Leeds but the time just isn't right. It reads like a come and get me, and although I have become used to Gus not always being quite as clear as he thinks he is being, I hope that Ken Bates doesn't read too much into it.

I think a main point to take into consideration today is the game changing influence of vicente. 3 assists off the bench in 2 games is a phenomenal contribution. It really shows all those idiots who comment on the argus slagging off vicente and poyets decisions that you should never doubt a player just because they are injured or question such a phenomenal managers decision. It really annoys me when people think they are better than poyet, particularly in our losing streaks. So pleased for the team who are all giving their best and really forming the best brighton team ive seen. Great times for the club.

I entirely agree. GP has yet to earn his wings. I now firmly believe we shall continue grinding out results with great play which will see us in the auto promo place behind West Ham.

Gus will give us a season or two before moving on to one of the big ones, Chelsea Tottenham or Arsenal. It would be unrealistic to suppose otherwise no matter how successful we are, we shall remain outside that elite. We shall never have an international fan base like them.

Stains will sneak in via the play-offs.

Good analysis from PBTB above. Lots of positives... We have the momentum, we have more home games than away to come, squad is going from strength to strength with quality new additions and injuries seemingly starting to abate. My worries... With the exception of Middlesbrough (now below us and sinking fast), everyone up there looks strong. All teams will have their wobbles, as Cardiff/Southampton have done in recent matches, but sure they will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. Anyway, I shouldn't worry, it's a great problem to have... Looking forward to a rested CMS running rioting on Tuesday night, it's hard to see anything other than an Albion victory!

I was on the other side of the ground near the North stand with by LUFC fan brother-in-law - great travelling support, but how can clubs get away with putting away supporters away in a shoebox in the most remote part of the ground - it really destroys potential atmosphere.

Lots of positives from the game - LUFC only got behind the new full backs once - and they both went forward well. Vokes OK, but needs someone sharper than AB to feed off him. The Dagger's touches. Wingers' work. Spirit (weathered Leeds comeback and goal to only finish the much stronger - Greer marshalled well). Nav's first and timely goal.

LUFC's only real threats (and goal) came from 3 crosses that we didn't beat them to, one giving the goal.

Good solid workmanlike display against a Leeds team made to look pretty uninspiring. A great grey day in Yorkshire, despite awful beer at the ground.

Roll on Tuesday and a place in the top 3.

Well I have always been one to urge caution when it came to back-to-back promotions fearing we would do a "Derby." I changed my mind when I looked at the match squad yesterday. Gus has brought together a good mix of youth, experience and premiership players. Yes, a few are on loan but if we get promoted we should expect them either to sign or we get equivalent replacements.
Gus is doing a remarkable job and it is easy to forget that it is still very early in his managerial career. He is still learning, as is Tony Bloom, what is needed to run a successful football club. They seem to be doing a pretty good job from where I am sitting.

On the subject of whether it is too early to get promoted.... IF we are good enough over the next 16 games to get ourselves into the playoffs given the stiff competition, and then beat a team over 2 legs, and then win at wembley, then there is no doubt in my mind that the premier league is where we should be!

The FL show is a joke - how a game that was abandoned before half-time can get more coverage than ours is beyond me. And Claridge really hasn't got a clue, he made some comment last night that it doesn't that the Portsmouth players haven't been paid for a couple of weeks. Completely disrespectful.

I do feel we must be a little more relaxed about the odd defeat and enjoy the ride. As the cliche goes, focus on one game at a time - and see where we are at the end of the season; stop worrying about whether Gus will stay or go - and enjoy this historic season!

A couple of games ago I was thinking that we need to string 3 wins in a row at some point, just to keep us outside the playoffs.

Yeah I know it is stating the obvious, but roll on Tuesday, this is a game for our taking.

If we get this win then the rest of the season is about the clubs around us slipping up as much as us doing well.

Every game is fascinating, even the ones that don't involve us.

SaintKenny, a draw for you on Tuesday would suit everyone except Westham. I accept that your run-in looks favourable.

Everyone seems to want an English manager this time.
The leading candidates:-
Harry Redknapp.
Roy Hodgson - The nightmare scenario. Imagine how busy The Samaritans would be if he replicated his time at Liverpool F.C.
Fortunately he hasn't thrown his hat into the ring.
Neither has realistic candidate Alan Pardew.
Martin Oneil, (o.k. Northern Irish), my personal favourite, has also ruled himself out.
Stuart Pierce - o.k. as caretaker.
Sam Allardyce - Last September insisted he 'would walk over burning coals', to take over from Fabio Capello when the Italian steps down after Euro 2012.
If he succeeds in getting the Hammers promoted, he could be interested, and would have that on his C.V. He has a reputation for grinding out points with no-nonsense football.
Points is something we will need in Euro 2012.

I'm not suggesting for a moment that B&HA resort to Big Sam's methods.
Club football has become more inportant than the national game, as evidenced by the absence of a queue for the job.
If you give me a choice of promotion for Brighton, or England to win Euro 2012, It's Brighton, without hesitation.
I wouldn't mind betting that those managers who have been linked with the England job would also choose success for their club.

He should be embarrassed about this video.

It’s one of those things, if you are black you can use and reclaim the N word, but I don’t think Suarez used that word anyway.

I think it was far more simple like, I don’t talk to blacks.

John Terry used the N word.

What's wrong with playi.g like Spain? It's exciting to watch and if you get to be as good as they are, difficult to beat. I'll concede we'd need to mix it up, try the "English" style now and again so long as you have the right players to play that way. No use being a one trick pony! Have you noticed that footballers are looking more like tennis players these days? When I was a kid there were many short players winning the big tournaments but now 6ft is considered short for a tennis player and football's going the same way. You need a team of giants who are also fast and can play as well as being strong. Exciting times.

I confess it was partly an attempt to start a debate by being controversial.
If we suddenly start to resemble Spain, I could live with that.
Also it isn't Big Sam's fault if he is the best available English candidate. (Some arm twisting might be required).

I'm convinced one of the major reasons for our resurgence is Tony Bloom as well as Gus. How many clubs have a true genuine life long supporter who is passionate about his club, AND most importantly doesn't start sticking his nose into playing matters and thinking he knows more than the manager and speaking to the media every five minutes. In addition a very stute businessman. I don't believe we will never have a worldwide fan base. All it needs is to get someone to go to the Far East and start opening some Seagull Shop franchises. Get the name out there, do some serious PR with schools, underpriveldged kids, give away playing kits, it's all about putting the energy of BHA out into the greater world. From little acorns great oak tress grow. With everyone believing - ANYTHING is possible. Man Utd was once a little railway club remember. You need a passionate Board, a passionate manager who is committed to the club with out wandering eyes for 'bigger clubs' and EVERYONE pulling together. Board, Staff, players, media, council etc etc. Everything is just energy and therefore anything is possible. I remember the Argus photo of Alan Mullery's office with the picture of the flying seagull on the wall. The inscription read 'WE CAN BECAUSE WE THINK WE CAN' and WE DID!!Stop all this nonsense about too soon to go up. Trust me it's NEVER to soon. Opportunties have to be seized in the moment. Don't let FEAR consume you. This is my 58th year of supporting the club and I sense something really big is developing. Well done to everyone!

Theres nothing wrong with questioning a player. However on the argus all you seem to get are cynics and people who think they know things better than poyet. It annoys me how people are ready to criticise players like barnes, who has been trying really hard in the new year, but praise players like noone like he has been faultless. Spot on. Must be so hard for a striker to have to play in a role that positively hampers his natural inclinations to score goals yet he hasn't complained and has done a great job in that role. I only hope that he sees the positive comments on here to know that many people appreciate what he does do.

On the argus you get people who are too negative when we lose a few games, and overly excited when we win a few games. It is inevitable that if you are bothering to post something then you will tend to have a more extreme viewpoint either way. I am personally very very happy with the season - I was happy enough before the recent run of form, but I think we'll all agree, this has made a real difference and given all Albion fans an extra spring in our step. Anyone who saw us meekly turned over at Coventry on New Year's Eve would have never predicted the run of form we've gone on in January and now in to February - quite incredible, and Gus and the players take so much credit from that. Obviously the return to fitness of some players helped, but others have stepped up and players like Brezovan have come in and done a fantastic job. I do, however, get a bit fed up of this stock response that comes out on these boards that you cannot say anything even remotely negative without being reminded of the Withdean years. It is incredible how far the club has come, that is not in doubt. Do I see what some of you see in Barnes? No. Does that mean I no better than Poyet or want to go back to Withdean? No.
