Poyet: We've not even clicked yet

Gous Poyet watches the action at Elland Road Gous Poyet watches the action at Elland Road

ALBION boss Gus Poyet reckons his new-look squad has not even clicked yet.

And he is ready to change a winning team again against Millwall at The Amex tomorrow night.

Poyet’s search for further improvement will send shudders through the Seagulls’ Championship promotion rivals after Saturday’s 2-1 win at Leeds stretched their unbeaten run in 2012 to nine matches and left them a point outside the play-off zone.

Transfer window loan signings Sam Vokes, Joe Mattock and Gonzalo Jara Reyes all started at Elland Road, as record signing Craig Mackail-Smith was relegated to the bench with Inigo Calderon.

Poyet, who will have virus victim Lewis Dunk back for Millwall’s visit, revealed to The Argus: “I don’t think we were outstanding, so it’s not as if the team that played on Saturday, because we won, all deserve to play on Tuesday.

“I think I need to find that click between the players and the ones who are on the pitch that day have got a chance to play from here to the end of the season.

“I have got possibilities now. For example, on Tuesday everyone will be available, except for Spadge (Matt Sparrow), but then on Sunday (Liverpool) there are a couple of players Cup-tied (Mattock and Jara Reyes), so I have got the chance to bring others back.

“There are options and I can use them a little bit more while always thinking about winning the game.

“There was no room for changes last year when we won the league. This year I learnt from the first three or four months - how strong we were in the beginning, how we gave everything we had against Liverpool and Leeds and then had a very bad run. I am trying not to make that mistake again.”

In-form winger Will Buckley was taken off at half-time on Saturday as a precaution.

“Bucker was just tightness in his hamstring,” Poyet said. “It’s not an injury. It was just that tightness which makes it a little bit risky and with Vicente and Nooney on the bench it was an easy decision.”

Schoolboy error Gus, you've ignored Zamora25's list with such strength in depth!

So pleased for CMS to get a goal after so long, and also encouraged by the three new loanees, who seemingly all played a massive part.

Very much looking forward to tomorrow night and the arrival of Millwall. Massive selection headache for GP, but this season has shown that any starting 11 can step up and perform.

Can't wait until Vicente can play 90 minute, liking the look of Mattock at left back as well

At the start of the season i was concerned that our squad would struggle against some of the big hitters in the Championship.I guess i should have had more faith in the team,i know we have added some quality in key areas, and that coupled with our style of play is making us serious contenders now. Great to see the delight on Macca's face after his goal at Leeds, hope he goes on to regain his confidence and instinct in front of goal now. Looking forward to 3 points tomorrow night.

No shortage of opportunities now for him with quality wingers and the "Dagger" pulling the strings in midfield.

With the tremendous quality of Vicente crafting such a high level of performance from the team, Navarro having the opportunity of scoring a hat-trick, and Maddock mopping up a rare error from Brezovan, Albion were worthy winners on Saturday.
You can now begin to see just how good the squad is, as well as the beginnings of the transition from Championship standard to Premier League standard, which is where we all want to be.
Our bench at Elland Road was arguably the best ever seen at the club, and certainly the best in the league for this season by far.
The future is brilliant, the future is a Brighton!

Brilliant result and things are slowly starting to click , i think Gus is right , lets stay cool about promotion and just keep playing one game at a time .We keep winning we will be there or there abouts , we could be the surprise team for this season ! I would love to see Vicente play 90 mins and i would also love to see Vokes and CMS play alongside each other , i know Barnes has improved over the last two/three games but would still love to see that pairing . Navs had a good game and its good to see the midfield now supporting the forward moves .. Would like to see Jake on the bench at least as i still see so much potential in him and if he played alongside Vicente it might be very creative .. With Liam holding and either Nooney, Bucks or Lua Lua out wide ... Mouth watering ... GG

It is really noticeable that we are just not getting knocked off the ball nearly so often. Physically we can now match the opposition. A win tomorrow which I think we shall get will really cement our position as the form team and the the march in the league onwards and upwards will be inexerable.

There have been a number of posts advising us to 'keep our feet on the ground' and to 'stay cool', about the 'P' word.
Why should we?
'Promotion' has become the elephant in the room. Some people will pretend that the elephant isn't there.
'Take each game as it comes' is another phrase often used, which doesn't actually mean anything.
Surely we all go to a match, or listen to the commentary, experience the same roller coaster of emotions, and is there anyone who doesn't then check out our position in the league table?
Our current position and momentum suggests to me that the elephant, (promotion) is not a figment of my imagination, but a real possibility.
I find promotion battles exciting, and anyone who won't accept that we are in one has my sympathy.
Wake up and see the elephant!

Gordon. It looks as though you're extending sympathy to Gus, in light of what he said today (see club website).

BTW - what is it this elephant in the room phrase? Everyone seems to be using it at the moment and you managed to get an entire herd into your post :)

I agree with most of that, GosportGull, but feel that 90 minutes for Vicente would be reckless, and unnecessary.

Thanks Gordon. I knew the context, just wondered why this idiom is suddenly so popular - keep hearing it at the mo.

I don't disagree with you though - I certainly think the players are now very aware of the possibilities ahead and there is a growing feeling of optism making its way though the supporters. We've got some key games over the next few weeks - Cardiff /Hull / Blackpool - the results from those matches will go a long way to revealing our potential this season.

I read the article, Dr Baldhead, and Gus is keen to play down 'P' this season, but, unsurprisingly, he says we play to win every game.
He hasn't ruled out the play-offs, but as a fan, I can be more ambitious without raising everyones' expectations.

The last two lines are NOT directed at Gus, but at those people advocating that we should 'keep our feet on the ground'. (mentioned at the beginning of the comment.)
Gus has to manage expectations and has got the balance just right.

Not an expression I've ever used myself, but just struck me as appropriate.

Unlike the headline, I've 'clicked' too much' so I'll quit while I'm ahead.
