Vokes savours first Albion goal

Sam Vokes celebrates his goal against Millwall Sam Vokes celebrates his goal against Millwall

Sam Vokes savoured a first strike for Albion and admitted: “It’s fantastic to get a goal.”

The on-loan striker followed up to score his side’s first equaliser last night when Alan Navarro’s shot took a handy ricochet.

Vokes, enjoying a first start at The Amex, said: “They are the ones you love as a striker.

“It just falls to you in the six-yard box and there is no keeper there to save it.

“They are the ones you live off. The 30-yarders are very rare. In the six-yard box is where you ply your trade as a striker.”

The frontman hired from Wolves felt his side deserved something for the way they responded to twice falling behind.

He added: “It was a tough game to get into. We fell behind twice but it showed the team spirit the way we came back.”

Kazenga LuaLua fired the late point-saver from a free-kick and revealed: “I looked across to the gaffer and he said ‘You take it’.

“It was nice to see it hit the back of the net.”

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett felt his side should have handed Albion their first defeat of 2012. He admitted: “It’s frustrating.”

Will Buckley (hamstring tightness) and Vicente (fatigue) were both absent but Albion boss Gus Poyet expects them to be available for Sunday’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Liverpool at Anfield.

Well please for both of them. Looked at a lot of criticism regards Gus team selection on the other articles but I don't think he viewed it as a good job well done like some have suggested but as he says they haven't all really clicked yet and he knows that he has to look at all the permutations. THAT is great management.

Would just like to point out that the wrong League table is shown on the penultimate page of this morning's Argus.

Very pleased for Voakes. Looks like a good team player to me who will work hard to get a permanent move. This is a crowd that really appreciates players who give 100%

Good news for Vokes and we have already seen enough, I suspect, to know that he has a long term future with us. Make it so Gus :)

Can't let last night go without some reference to the violent and aggressive homophobia displayed by a significant minority of Millwall fans. Way beyond the banter that we are all used to and anyone reading their fans' forums pre and post match will be saddened at attitudes that seem to be stuck in what we all hope is an increasingly distant past. Millwall FC signed an anti- homophobia charter yesterday. Hopefully they will know that is only a beginning.

I think we all realise that Vicente needs to be handled carefully, whatever the reasons for him being out of the side.

He might have played only half an hour against Leeds, but this is a guy that has a long history of injuries, and has only just come back in the side. I would much rather he be rested if he is not feeling 100%, than risked, the result of which is him being out of the side for another month or longer.

The fact that he can turn a game on its head and completely boss it when he DOES come on is encouragement enough. Or will people be again calling for his contract to be terminated?

SV looks a great addition - strength, great movement and ability to adjust to our style of play. I still see the team as a work in progress, but when it all comes together, it will be a joy to watch.

My money is on a big performance against Ipswich at the end of the month, possibly aided by the addition of Abdul Razak from Man City.

My sentiments entirely Cabin fever.
I wasn't at the match and was following the scores on Sky Sports News. I thought we were going to lose with only a few minutes to go and was delighted to suddenly see we had equalised. That's one attribute this team has it plays the full 90 minutes.
I have to say I was surprised to see that Poyet had chosen 3 defensive midfielders but assumed he wanted plenty of physical presence in midfield against Millwall. If Vicente needed to be rested I would have thought JFC might have been the obvious replacement with Sparrow suspended. With no Vicente or Buckley and Noone on the bench we were likely to be short on creativity.
It is this type of scenario that underlines the sense in Poyet wanting to get in another midfielder whether it is Razak or someone else.
Delighted for Vokes who judging from the match reports and all the postings looks as if he might be the target man Albion have wanted. Also pleased that Agdestein had some more game time. Some postings indicate that he did well once he came on.
Incidently when speculating on the Team for Sunday don't forget that (unfortunately) Mattock and Reyes are cup tied. On the other hand we can name 7 subs.
Finally its a sign of a good team that even when it is playing badly still comes away with something. Its what Man U do time after time not that I am comparing the Albion to Man U - at least not yet !

Pleased for Sam, I think he'll prove a valuable asset. He led the line really well and I look forward to seeing him develop an understanding with MCS and Buckley. Also like to see Agdestein get a chance. He impresses every time he comes on. Looks dangerous, creates chances and looks like a good finisher too. Could be a ready alternative to Barnes. Anyone else here share my view that Barnes hits the deck to easily. Every time he gets a nudge he goes over pleading for a foul. We had a couple of good moves last night which ended fruitlessly with him throwing himself on the ground. I'm sick of seeing him sitting on the deck imploring free kicks. He gotta toughen up. Didn't see Vokes, or Henderson for that matter, complaining when they took a challenge. Have a word Gus !!

I am in a bit of a posting mood. Yes, I fully share your view that Barnes is looking for the foul all the time. Goes against my old fashioned view on how the game should be played. We do not need it.

Agree with both of you, Refs talk and Barnes is getting a name for it, hense he is left on the ground moaning whilst the game carries on.

I wouldn't say Barnes does it all the time but there are quite a few times when he does go down too easy. However, saying that, there are also several instances when he shows very good strength on the ball and shields the ball from 2/3 players and then lays it off nicely.

Personally i thought Mattock was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch last night. Some great skill and rarely put a foot wrong. He actually reminded me of Taricco at times. Navarro and Bridcutt got the basics right. Dunk looked unusually hesitant and as for many others, his passing was just too loose. I was surprised by the line up and I think Gus has taken responsibility for that but to be honest none of that excuses the consisitent sloppy passing. Having said that, we showed why we are where we are. I genuinely feared for us after the loss at home to Palace but Gus has done what he did last season when people worked us out. He's gone back to basics and made us hard to beat.

Vicente 'fatigued seems to confirm my opinion that he should not be risked for anything more than cameo appearances.
Thirty minutes per game for the rest of the season should provide a good return on the investment.

There is something seriously wrong here, 30 minutes and he has fatigue, I was hoping for him to put in a good 90 minutes last night, why do we buy players that are injured when we get them, don't they have a proper medical these days. "Phil Beal" and holiday comes to mind. Brighton Bill Yorkshire Seagull.

Agree totally and draw your attention to a post i wrote on a previous thread;
Yes we struggled last night against a strong, well organised and fairly decent side. Number 6, Trotter, stood out for me. Stong big and quick (rare combination) just the sort of player we could do with at times! Team selection odd and cost us the whole 3 points as I am fairly sure we would have turned them over in greater style if we had played a different team. Still, unbeaton in2012 and shouting distance of the playoffs, so not really much to be unhappy about!!

On another note, Just wanted to say what a disgrace a significant majority of Millwall's fans are. Aggressive, foul mouthed scum who go out of their way to "prove" themselves regardless of who is around them, woman, kids and the elderly. They think they are hard and threatening, but they are just morons who must live in the gutter and want eveyone to hate them. Ally clubs have their hard boys, but few like this rabble and fewer still that would show so much dis-respect for children, woman etc. Apologies in advance to any decent Millwall fans reading this, but many of your fans are just pond life (and thats not even fair to the inhabitents of murky green, stagnant water!”

That was a classic -'terrace' humour at its best. Non followers of football miss a lot.
Digressing, the interview with Tiger Towner was not the most compelling and revealing one I've heard. I think it was just about established that Brighton just edged Millwall out as his favourite. Good local lad.

Yes, Vicente can turn a game as he has shown. He apparently was not injured but suffering from fatigue. Now that's a different story. Most of todays players are just prima donna softies. They would know what fatigue was all about if they had to put in an 8-10 hour shift in a coal mine or steel works etc. The list could go on. What a poor excuse, and Gus obviously bought it. I wouldn't be moaning to much about fatigue if I was on thousands of pounds a week.

When did I ever suggest he was injured? Once again, we don't know the ins and outs of the Vicente story, and nor should we. It's none of our business.

The whole point I was making is that he needs to be treated differently, due to the history of illness/injury that he has had.

I reckon Vicente has fatigue from banging Saraman and Seagullsays missus' whilst they were at the football on Valentines night.
We should not expect to see him in the squad and just enjoy it, if and when we do see him play. He might even have it in his contract to only play half an hour on a Saturday, no weekday games, and only then if it's a full moon.Who knows?

Seriously people, decide whether you love or hate vicente and stick with it. Don't love him when he plays and then hate him as soon as he's rested.

The word 'fickle' springs to mind, along with many others that I'm not allowed comment.

I never at any time stated that anyone suggested that Vicente was injured. It was the Argus that stated that he was fatigued as opposed to being injured. It is not a case of loving or hating Vicente but we as his paymasters are entitled to pose the question as to his commitment to the cause. Any paymaster in any profession would be entitled to ask the same. What disturbs me to some extent is that some commenters on here appear to take it as a personal affront if their comments are disagreed with. We are all wishing every success for our beloved Albion and that should be our focus.

It's not like that at all, I just think it's ridiculous how one man can go from saint to sinner, back to saint and then back to sinner again so quickly.

As I've said in previous comments, it is understandable that Vicente wasn't available for the Millwall game. After the Leicester game he had a week to recover, after Leeds he only had 3 days. BE PATIENT!

He should be fit for Sunday though says Gus. I would say could be, maybe, hopefully etc etc etc and so on. That is why he was not even on the bench Tuesday night. I'm a fan of Barnes but I have to agree with you on this one. Not sure if it's a lack of toughness, I see it more that he hasn't got the skill to cheat well. He is fast becoming our Rodney Marsh and I don't like it. I'd much rather he stayed on his feet and fought harder to win the ball and/or position, even if it means that when he is fouled it gets missed. I'd certainly have more respect for him.
