Extra work catches up with Vicente

Playing catch-up: Vicente Playing catch-up: Vicente

Gus Poyet has revealed why Vicente was too tired to face Millwall.

But the Albion boss insists he is delighted with the efforts his Spanish star is making to regain full fitness.

Vicente is still expected to be ready to face Liverpool on Sunday while Will Buckley returns to full training today after sitting out the 2-2 draw with the Lions due to hamstring tightness.

Poyet said: “Vicente was really tired on Tuesday morning. He had tight muscles in his legs. You have to remember he has been training more than ever.

“It has been full-on training for ten days after doing not so much for three months. He trained on Sunday. He has been making a lot of effort to be fit.”

Poyet said Vicente was keen to work hard and added: “That’s the key. I am very pleased.”

Buckley was taken off at half-time at Leeds on Saturday but Poyet said: “He will 100% be ready. He trained a bit on Tuesday.”

The Albion boss is happy for development squad striker George Barker to go on loan to Hartlepool, although reports from the North East last night suggested the deal had stalled.

Barker stayed on the South Coast yesterday and helped the development squad draw 0-0 away to a Southampton side which included senior players Lee Barnard and Radhi Jaidi.

For the time being, I will remain a Doubting Thomas where Vicente is concerned. Not regarding his obvious skill and ability, but his mental commitment to playing regularly. I'd still love him to become an Albion success story, however, and would be highly delighted if he turns out on Sunday and makes a significant contribution to a special day for the club and its loyal supporters.

I remember when Cloughie signed Trevor Francis as the first million pounds player and Mick Chanon was foorball pundit commenting in Francis always injured. "It;s all very well having a Rolls Royce in the garage but if it never runs its a bit of a waste." I don;t think Vicente;s ability or committment is the problem but Gus needs to consider the effect on the rest of the team who are obviously delighted to play with him but can be unsettled because they can;t rely on him.

The disappointment for me is that for virtually the entire season, Vicente has hardly figured. Lesser talents like Sparrow and Navarro have fought hard to get in the team and stay there. Along comes a showcase game - is he about to spend more time on the pitch than ever before this season? Of course I hope he gets fit and helps the Albion to continued success about but this is quite a saga

Why would they make up that he is tired? Have no reson to doubt it myself. Think everyone just assumed he was being rested. What Poyet has said makes total sense to me.

On a slightly cheerier note...we've signed Abdul Razak on loan for the rest of the season!

Good question - no mention anywhere on sports sites (newsnow.co.uk). Come on Joe, name that source...

Seeing the players' respond to his set-ups for goals by mobbing him ahead of the actual scorers I don't think you need to haave any concerns that the other players rate him as a valued member of the team.
Hope George Barker gets a loan deal - handy looking player but he needs the chance to step up a level to prove whether he has what it takes. Very odd comments from the Hartlepool manager over the deal so looks like it may not happen.

Sorry, haven't been on here for a while and it's now the top story on the site, but I got it from Andy Naylor on twitter.

I reckon they are saving Vicente for liverpool--but to say he is tired!!! What about the work rate makail Smith puts in and have we heard he is tired and he has played for most of the season. Surely Albion are not paying the Spaniard top wages to play now and then 'whenhe is not tired' never heard such rubbish!!!

I take it that no-one here is a professional footballer? and no-one here understands the effort needed to compete at this level? and no-one here is Vicente's doctor? Then without the facts or understanding, how can you comment? It's not an ideal situation, but hopefully he'll reach full fitness levels soon and appear in most of the remaining games.

Would that be the same Trevor Francis who scored the winning goal for Forest in the European Cup Final by heading in at the far post and landing on concrete?

Yeah - really knew what he was talking about that Mick Channon (when it came to horses)... ;)

Best post on this thread - exactly right. Vicente has been on the pitch for less than 60 minutes in two successive matches prior to Tuesday. Set up three goals in that time, earning Albion 6 points, and still people moan?? Come on guys - Gus says the guy is basically busting a gut to get fit. I will go with Gus...

It seems to me that players in all clubs are getting injured more often than in the past. Their careers also seem to end earlier.

Players seem to peak at 28, but Vicente seems to have missed his peak years. There might be two seasons good football from him if he gets fit.
