LuaLua strikes but Albion are hammered
6:21pm Sunday 19th February 2012 in Sport By Brian Owen
Kazenga LuaLua scored a cracker in front of the Kop – but three own goals helped send Albion spinning out of the FA Cup.
The Seagulls were thumped 6-1 by Liverpool in the fifth round as Liam Bridcutt (twice) and Lewis Dunk were debited with OGs.
Martin Skrtel and Andy Carroll also netted and Luis Suarez added a late sixth having earlier had a penalty saved by Peter Brezovan.
LuaLua's terrific free-kick on 17 minutes gave the Seagulls parity after going behind early.
They conceded in only the fifth minute as Skrtel headed home a Steven Gerrard corner at the near post.
The Seagulls settled, though, knocked the ball around and levelled in stunning style 12 minutes later.
LuaLua won a free-kick with a mazy run, then thrashed his 30-yarder low past Pepe Reina's right hand.
Albion played some nice stuff and looked comfortable in possession.
But Liverpool carried the greater threat.
Suarez thought he had scored when he beat a couple of tackles and rolled a shot past Brezovan but Inigo Calderon got back to divert the ball over his own bar.
Brezovan tipped a curling Gerrard free-kick over the bar on 43 minutes but the resulting corner saw Liverpool regain the lead in scrappy style.
A Suarez shot was blocked, Glen Johnson headed the ball goalwards and Sam Vokes headed off the line – only for the ball to hit Bridcutt and bounce in.
Liverpool made a terrific start to the second half and Carroll flashed a left-foot shot past Brezovan after Stewart Downing had cut the ball back.
That quality finish was followed by two bizarre goals.
First Bridcutt inadvertently diverted Gerrard's driven low cross into his own after an error by Alan Navarro.
Then the otherwise outstanding Dunk bizarrely juggled the ball into his own trying to clear a cross.
Suarez added a close-range sixth from Carroll's far-post knockdown on 85 minutes, having been outwitted by Brezovan from the penalty spot a few minutes earlier.

today .perhaps now talk of premiership football next season will cease What was very obvious was that a majority of the team are no more than championship players Wheather the new signings made by Gus are the answer we will have to wait and see but certainly the likes of Brezavan ,Caulderon and Navarro were not up to it today and to play a unfit Noone certainly was a poor selection decision”

That was a Liverpool side in top form, and we don't make mistakes like that in the Championship.
This is the best possible outcome in relation to our League season.

embarrassment, nothing else about it. The defending was practically non existant, tactics non existant, passion non existant. It always makes me wonder how lua lua was left on the bench for the first half of the season, he was the only bright performance on this dark dark day. Bridcutt hasnt done much to make me change my opinion of him. Hull is the important game at least.

Tonight I watched on the telly from Sweden and saw a very good passing side who keep the ball quite well and obviously believe in the way we play and all of the coaching staffs philosophy. Unfortunately two things were at fault on the night.
We do not have the ability of the Liverpool players even although the passing philosophy is the right one. Carrol l in monetary terms is arguably worth our entire squad. 2ndly although adding Vicente and Noone was the right call, taking off El-Abd was a tactical error. This decision led to players being forced into a formation they have never faced before or (hopefully) will again. Playing 3 at the back caused chaos in defence and ultimately the leakage that followed.
The conclusion is that we play the right way, do not have the quality of the premier league and sometimes make tactical errors. Tonight all 3 of those weaknesses were exposed.

OK lets get a little bit of perspective on the game. I'll start by introducing myself properly on the site. Born and raised in Brighton and saw my first game at the Goldstone back in the 80's when we lost 2-0 against a Southampton side with Peter Shilton in goal. Got my piece of the Goldstone turf and the back of a seat in 1997 etc. Since 2000 I've followed the Albion from Australia, America and now Sweden. I am a season ticket holder and still get back for half of the home games every year.

Let us not get ahead of ourselves, until the third goal anthig could have happened. They have a squad that has cost £100's of millions of pounds, the gulf in class is obvious and now let us get back to basics. The cup run has financed the strengthening of the squad for Championship football. We should all be happy with what is happening longterm not about getting knocked out in the 5th round of the F.ACup.My only disappointment was the Goalkeeping but I am sure Gus will address that issue sooner rather than later.

I couldn't make it to Anfield, so watched it in a local pub where there was about a 50/50 split between LFC and BHAFC supporters. There was some great banter going on and after their 6th I was singing 'we're gonna win 7-6'! I watched the whole game with a smile on my face and we should not see this as a reflection to how our season has gone, or is going to go.

1. Liverpool obviously respected us as they put out a very strong team, probably nearly their 1st eleven.
2. Although we conceded 6 goals, to be fair, the own goals we really bad luck. On another day they would all have been brilliant saves, and the other goals were all good goals, some of which showed our frailties.
3. We did not disgrace ourselves at all, we were simply outclassed by a top Premier League team.
4. We didn't seriously expect to win the FA Cup.
I will agree with a couple of previous posters about the lessons we will learn from this game, and they will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season.
With the new signings this all bodes well for what is to come.

Ask them if they would have preferred to play Bolton in the 5th round this weekend or put four past Derby in the League.

Very fair point, Fretless, and I believe it was the first time Liverpool have been able to play Carrol, Suarez and Gerrard in the same team. Liverpool, at their best, are probably the third best team in the country. Having said that, a non-league team would have defended better than we did today.

Ok, watched the game on ESPN or whatever...
Good news and bad news time.
The good news:-
1. We scored more goals on the night
than Liverpool, not many sides can
say that? (Apologies to LB & LD).
2. Brighton away support, absolutely
MAGNIFICENT, totally out-sung the
Kop on every level. V. proud to be a
BHA away supporter but not on this
occasion, lol.
3. In spite of some comments above, I
thought Barnes had a great game,
fantastic work rate, constantly
tracking back and rescuing the
situation for Brighton, imo.
4. Lua Lua excellent again, one of the
few players who did not look
overawed by the surroundings.
The bad news:-
1. CMS is obviously hacked off which is
presumably why he didn't start?
2. Brezovans' display in goal was the
worst I have ever seen from him,
how the back four managed
without a Goalkeeper is beyond me,
he was diabolical......
This game is total proof of why we wont be in the Premiership next season, but WILL be building a solid, skilfull side to compete in the top division in a year or two.
There, rant over and again, WELL DONE the faithful Albion away supporters, I salute you as you were something for the Albion faithful to be proud of on an embarrassing and reflective night.
I thank you.....:-))

To be fair 6-1 flattered us in the end - Liverpool opened us up at will in both halves.....we are very easy to play against in a match against a really top side. If we had played them when Suarez was suspended, Gerrard was injured and Carroll was playing like a donkey, we may have been able to hold them. Thought Vokes did well first half and KLL had a lively match and another good free kick. Noone doesn't look quite right at the moment while Caldy was really exposed at this level - surprised he stayed on ahead of El-Abd who had a reasonably solid game. Think Reyes will be back in at Right Back at Hull. Real mixture from Brezovan - made a lot of saves but everything was a bit fraught. Suspect all the loan players, apart from the Israeli will start on Wednesday - does anyone if JFC is injured at the moment?

Not a bad couple of cup runs, games on the telly, money in the bank. Now have a strong squad to make the most of the rest of the season. Looking good, I reckon.

Any Albion fan not hurting after that result is kidding themselves. 5 is just acceptable but 6 puts it in the embarrassment zone and I like many will avoid reading the sports pages in the papers tomorrow. I have been a fan in exile for over 30 years now and go to very few games but do watch the games on tv. Today we were totally exposed with too many players making fundamental mistakes but to be honest we have rode our luck in so many other games, we dont appear to have a plan B when things go wrong and the play is so predictable and borders on being boring at times. I will be very surprised if we are anywhere near the play offs come end of season and unless Gus is willing to to adopt a different style of play when necessary then i doubt very much whether he will be able to take us forward. Hull and Ipswich will both fancy there chances after watching the game today. I hope I am proved wrong but i can see us getting a max of one point from the next two games.
get a grip man, we're 9th in the league and are 3 points off the play-offs. Even teams who are actually in the premier league get beaten like that, ie Arsenal 8-2!

Brezovan did exactly the same against Millwall and same result,a goal against us. I have a feeling that the Man City goalkeeper may make his debut against either Hull or Ipswich. We have a golakeeping coach can't he tell the keepers to catch high balls when unchallenged, just basic common sense to retain possession. Very disappointing but hopefully we can move on but this has exposed a lot of failings in some players.

Brighton were quite decent in the 1st half. As one observed Abdy shouldnt have been taken off but I think Gus wanted to get Noone on out of sentiment even though he was unfit.
But it doesnt matter in fact it never mattered because it was only the cup. Its probably going to extinguish any chance of promotion because with just 15 matches left we have to play catch up and cant afford any slip ups.
Basically we need 10 wins out of 15. Its a big ask

Southampton were knocked out at home by Millwall less than two weeks ago.
Since then, they have picked up seven points from nine in the League.
Ask them if they would have preferred to play Bolton in the 5th round this weekend or put four past Derby in the League.
They have soon put the Cup behind them, and so will we.
Seagulls on the other hand will have to pick up from a humiliation on telly. Still at least you have the honour of Dunk going straight into Danny Baker's top three OGs, and of course Gus will be pleased his "misunderstood" mate Suarez got himself back on the scoresheet.
Worse though is that El-Abd's been rumbled, by Chris Waddle and all the ESPN pundits, as more suited to a rugby than a footie pitch. A few more refs may now keep their eye on him. Shame it's too late for Rickie Lambert's and the Leicester guy's 3 and 4 match bans, but maybe Adam's tactics will finally get the scrutiny that fair play on the football field deserves.

I would even question if Gus has installed too much of a lack of urgency in our play. It seems very casual and we are not even able to win corners, we play so far back.
Giving the ball away cheaply led to the goals even before Brez fluffed up.
It was not just individual mistakes, it was a team and management failure. The only joy was KLL.
The next 3 games will determine our season. We have to win 3 in a row just to stay with the pack.
It will be interesting how Cardiff play against Liverpool as this will be a good comparison to where we really are.

I would say, that the 2nd half was extremely valuable to our future development, because you only learn from your mistakes. Firstly, whilst we moved forward ponderously and without conviction or ideas, Liverpool broke forward with speed and conviction and ideas. Secondly, we allowed their forwards far too much time and space. We didn't close them down, but retreated into our own area. Thirdly, high balls into our area were cleared by a bunched group of defenders getting in each others way (marking no one!). Liverpool players waited to receive the clearances, and promptly returned the ball into the area with interest and eventually the net.
Fifthly, the goalkeeping position needs to be improved. Brezovan needs to learn quickly or be replaced.
The players should review the video of the match and LEARN!!!
The own goals were unfortunate, but Liverpool were still worth a 6-1 victory.
Well played El Abd and Lua Lua, also Vokes.
Fourthly, it was clear that we need TWO STRIKERS up front (i.e. Vokes - who played well in the first half and won most of the headers - and Craig MacKail Smith). Barnes, although he played well defensively, lacks the finesse and control to be considered as a forward.

Now having seen the team on the 2 tele cup ties (previously only seen highlights) - one thing is obvious - a new top goalie is a critical need plus height in defense to handle a 6 foot plus striker. Gus seems to have concentrated on attack and midfielders.
Hope they make the playoff (need 75 76 points) but lets have another year in Championship before thinking Premiership.Gus might stay that long.

Come on chaps. Nothing to fret about. Gus clearly wasn't taking it seriously. Starting with our 3rd choice striker and bridcutts understudy as the creative heart of our midfield tells you everything you need to know. Today was about about sentiment for the scousers and getting the FA cup nuisance out of the way as quickly as possible. 2 prem full backs on Wednesday, Razak in the middle and who knows, even Vicente and Hull won't know what's hit em. On with the real business. And the real team.
Having said that, I think the match put our weaknesses into sharp focus and made these crystal clear to Gus.
I was pleased to hear Gus say that he was upset for the travelling fans at the second half shambles.
My only major concern is that he has only ever played Craig with at most 2 wingers. He needs the support of another striker and/or class midfielder like Vicente. I hope he doesn't get so upset that he wants away. Because Gus has identified the need to shore up the defence and midfield, he's had to work up front on his own. He's done this brilliantly with incredible energy, tireless running and commitment, but after all the recent unfair attention on his goalscoring drought, who would blame him if he wants out. He's still a class act, but time is running out, and unless he's given the service he deserves, my guess is that he could well leave us at the end of the season. I sincerely hope not, and that he stays for a real promotion push next season, assuming we fall just short this year. But who knows?!!!

If we did somehow get promoted those loan players might conceivably become permanent.
With a massive injection of funds, further additions would be inevitable, and the whole picture would change. Also players' transfer values would increase, and we could sell the unwanted players at a nice profit. if the chance of getting to the Premiership presents itself, then we should grab it. After all, Norwich are 8th with a squad of players from the lower divisions. Some of the football the Albion played against Liverpool was premiership class. The reason we lost, was because of 4 or 5 players (with all due respects!) like Brezovan,Barnes, Noone, Navarro and Calderon, are not on a par with Liverpool, nor did Dunk and Bridcutt (on the day) cover themselves with glory. These weaknesses overcome, would see us match teams like Norwich, and would see us staying up next season.

Another day it could have been quite different, and even diehard 'Pool fans know that as evidenced by this piece from Kopsource.com:
The Premier League could do an awful lot worse than Brighton and Hove Albion
No, wait, come back! Seriously, they could. For an hour or so, this was a well fought contest, aided by an away team willing to play attractive football and attack with purpose. There are plenty of Premier League sides who travel to Anfield without either of those intentions, and without wishing to sound condescending, the Championship outfit deserve great credit for the way they went about the game.
A Premier League with Brighton and Hove Albion in it would be more competitive, more entertaining, more fun. Teams who choose to play attacking football (take note, Villa, Stoke, Bolton) and manage to execute it effectively (ahem, Wigan..) deserve to play at the highest level. Who cares if they capitulate with 30 minutes to go? This season has seen some of the biggest winning margins against the top sides in the Premier League’s history. Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle, Tottenham and Arsenal have all fallen to scorelines similar to today’s – who’s to say Brighton would do any worse?

Bridcut's unlucky first OG gave them a half-time lead. It could and should have been 1-1 at the break.
Dunk's OG was also very unlucky and an uncharacteristic error.
Once the 3rd goal went in, we made two attacking substitutions, tried to attack them, lost the ball and were repeatedly caught on the break. After the 4th ridiculous goal (Dunk's), heads dropped and we totally lost the plot.
A bad day at the office, but there were many positives to be taken from the game and if we learn from, and rectify, the weaknesses, it will be invaluable.
Having said that, Suarez, Gerard, Carroll, Downing and Adam is SOME attacking force!!!
No disgrace in a heavy defeat, bearing in mind we had 4/5 "lesser" players on the field today.

Lets move on and hope Gus finds the combination that works that is what he is employed to do,
I don't think we have clicked yet as a team,
Am still concerned as to the reason KLL did not celebrate his goal he did not even smile when congratulated I believe there is a problem with attitude somewhere in the camp which is upsetting some players KLL was the only player on the pitch today that had the ability to worry the oposition, we are playing about 10 to 15 yds back from that of the start of the season by which I mean teams are not letting us bring the ball up to the halfway point to start playing our passing game, which means the way we are set if we lose possession we get punished this is why we need creativity in mid field,
Bird tut is a great holding player but when he is on the ball the forward and wingers are not making the runs and the ball then finds itself to a wingback if we are pegged back to the flanks CMS is useless he needs balls played through the centre Chanel, I think the real problem because we have go creative players we can play in the middle is that our defence is so weak in certain areas we have to use players like Barnes and Navvaro to track back to deep to often!
Maybe and I hope it is this is what Gus is planning with the new additions?
anything is possible

No question we were outclassed, but only after second goal and throughout second half. Liverpool were at their best in longer periods and speed and strength of passing un did us.
Keep the faith. I remember Shankly taking over when they were in the second division. They played us = newly promoted from old 3rd South. As a club they were on the floor when Bill Shankly arrived. Decrepit stadium mid table 2nd Division. Now look at them! It takes time after years of mediocrity and we're heading in the right direction.
Keep focussing on what we want - and not on what we don't want and all will be well. Fans can pay a massive part with positivity. Keep the faith and roll on Wednesday! I do think a real top class keeper is essential. Breznovan with his size should be eating those high balls and knocking guys like Carroll out of space. He seems too gentle! Also, concerned about CMS. Great guy and works his backside off. I recall at Burgess Hill pre season I counted about 12 times him with his arms aloft screaming for the ball when the man in posession was 30 yards away - when he always would have received it at Peterborough. The way we play either he had to adapt and change his game or we had to adapt - which is probably not going to happen. A bit similar to Torres leaving Liverpool and the way they play and going to Chelsea. I trust Gus will sort it all out as long as he stays committed to the club. We're not stupid - we know that if Spurs/Chelsea etc came in for him he's going to go - not necessary to ram it down peoples throats. It's like a parent who keeps talking about leaving a marriage - it destabilises the kids! That is the players metaphorically!
Can hardly wait to see the Israeli lad. He looked class simply in the warm up!
Great support today in numbers, vocals and humour. A great advert for the club. Well done everyone who made the journey!!

We are having a good season in the Championship and we all talk about getting into the play-offs. The team and subs we put out yesterday was pretty much the strongest we have of players that we currently own and what yesterday demonstrated was that few, if any, of them are good enough to play in the Premiership every week. The result wasn’t important but that match demonstrated very clearly just how far we still have to go (and how much we will have to spend) if we are serious about getting into the Premiership in the near future – and staying there.

Can't believe some of what I've been reading. Andy Carrol cost Liverpool £35 million - far more than the entire Brighton squad put together. And he is just one player. Liverpool have players who are European and even world class. Albion's squad has been built on a budget, which by comparison is a shoe string. This being so wasn't a result like this always on the cards, whoever Poyet picked, or whatever tactics he adopted? Very fair point, Fretless, and I believe it was the first time Liverpool have been able to play Carrol, Suarez and Gerrard in the same team. Liverpool, at their best, are probably the third best team in the country. Having said that, a non-league team would have defended better than we did today.
Also, I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but what a dump Anfield is. Lots of us are Liverpool supporters too, first time I've been there, what a disappoinment. I couldn't even see the scoreboard from my 'seat'. Best Brighton support I've heard in a long time too. I didn't stop laughing.

Ask them if they would have preferred to play Bolton in the 5th round this weekend or put four past Derby in the League.
They have soon put the Cup behind them, and so will we.

Having seen neary every team in our division play us now (Ipswich, Derby, Watford and promotion candidates Reading being the exceptions), we have not ridden our luck and in NO WAY look out of place in this division.
In fact we were UNlucky. It to get more from Blackpool, Burnley and Middlesborough, while easily beating Saints (h) and Cardiff (a).
Off the back of a thrashing at Anfield I can see us getting SIX points from Hull and Ipswich (though am guessing four).

His handling looks very good when he does go for it but he only seems to claim '100% certainty' crosses. However a couple of great saves including the penalty and resultant clearance when three Liverpool players bore down on the rebound gave him some credit.
Good first half up until Brezovan decided to feebly punch a cross he could easily have caught as no Liverpool player near him which led to the 2nd goal and that changed the game just before half time.Second half totally outplayed and the goalkeeping and defending very poor. Lua Lua and Navarro looked our best players and Noone unfortunately, seems unable to produce a decent cross.
Agree we may see the ex-City goalie between the sticks now - Brez certainly looks like he migh be dropped after repeat-offending his Millwall punch out at Anfield. Two in two spells trouble for him.

Thankfully, Gus will not be of this opinion, as we were playing LIVERPOOL! That's right, Liverpool, a team that have won 5 European cups, 18 League titles and have been at the top of English football for years.
The team they put out yesterday is worth at least £200m collectively, with one player alone worth £35m.
I, for one, hope that nothing is based on this performance, as we are a championship team and our season should be judged on where we finish in the championship, and how we perform against other championship teams, and not based on a one-off cup match against a top 5 premier league team!

The teams we face now are of our own standard and we have a much-strengthened squad with which to do that for the remaing games this season. Therefore, whilst automatic promotion is not on, there is a very realistic chance for Albion featuring in the play-offs, where anything can happen and the form book often goes out of the window. The clubs likely to feature above us this year are not light-years ahead of us in quality, so I don't think we should settle for anything less than a play-off place. The Premiership is not full of Liverpools and with the right additions we could survive and develop further. I'm feeling glum, yes, but feel optomistic for our chances over the rest of the season.

gus and the players need to look at the video of how to play back to front with pace and that should be the blueprint in how future albion teams should play. the philosophy that gus wants is correct but to get a better tempo you need better players and unless you've got the sort of money man city has it won't happen overnight
for those saying it would be an embarrasement if we go up this year i say this. So many doom mongers. Onward. Upwards.
I agree with your comments above. I thought we were exposed down the flanks which meant we tried defending very deep which caused Brezovan problems. We looked OK until their second goal although they looked the more threatening side throughout.
Really enjoyed Lua Lua's goal.
One thought. The Albion squad today was short of about 4 or 5 players who will probably be included for the Hull game on Wednesday, namely Reyes, Mattock, Razac, Sparrow ans possibly Assulin. Very few teams in the Premiership let alone the Championship could play yesterday's Liverpool side with so many players missing and expect to win. Having said that the second half performance was poor and our defence after half time, to quote Poyet, 'comical'.

Ken from Beamish wrote:Excellent and constructive post. Totally agree.
Having been at the game, it was clear that Albion were set up correctly for the first half - their usual 4-5-1, with both full backs getting cover from the wingers, KLL & Buckley. Apart from the opening goal (why do we persist on not having defenders covering both posts ?) we looked reasonably comfortable and played some good controlled football. Most of the players looked assured playing in this formation and, as Vince says, Dalglish was indeed very agitated during the 1st half. The goal before half-time helped change the game plus, no doubt, a rocket from King Kenny at half-time. Liverpool moved up a gear at the start of the second half, and Carroll's goal was the result of a well-worked move. Gus was then faced with leaving the formation as it was, or changing it and chasing the game. He made a bold substitution (and one with an eye on saving legs for Wednesday) by taking off a defender and his target man. So he decided to be positive and chase a result, rather than go for damage limitation. Unfortunately, this exposed Calderon to Downing's pace, left Albion short in defensive midfield cover (Vicente not famous for his tracking back), and put CMS in the target man role (which he is not built for). Gerrard ran riot with the additional room he had, the (now) back three became more and more exposed, and we had no physical presence to hold the ball up front. Hence, one way traffic for most of the second half, although even then there were one or two good things from us going forward. Although the scoreline might be seen as somewhat embarrassing, the result in the bigger scheme of things is unimportant. What's great to see is how Gus is gradually building a squad to compete for a play-off place and, if we don't get promoted this year, to put the foundations in place for a big push next season. It's work in progress, and I was very interested to read Stevie Gerrard's program notes about how much he rates Gus, and that what he is building could land Albion in the Prem Lge. Don't let one or two results diminish what is being built here. There were plenty of performances (in first half particularly) to be proud of yesterday, and compare what has been spent in transfer fees on both sides and indeed on wages! One thing we can take from Liverpool is their unwavering support - personally, I was proud of the team yesterday. Given time and reasonable financial investment, I have no doubt Gus and Tony can take this club into the Premiership - just look at what has been achieved so far under their leadership.

Brezovan; - Was dropped at this stage last season after being held accountable for the 3-0 drubbing at Stoke in the FA Cup 5th round. Owing to the inadequacies of Ankergren, has just reclaimed his place (about 4 or 5 games ago). Up until Tuesday v Millwall has looked very good indeed - however, was at fault for "punching when he should have caught" resulting in a goal on Tuesday, and again yesterday at a key moment, just before Half time, when we really just needed to see out the half. Thereafter, was a bag of nerves. Has surely lost his place again. Penalty save barely makes up for the over-all display.
Greer : Was it him who was at fault for the 4th goal? I thought it was, totally misjudging a high ball to allow the red shirted player to nip in... may be wrong...
Dunk; - Will never forget his moment in front of the kop, juggling the ball off his chest, knee and then slotting calmly in ....Has wiped millions off his potential transfer fee, and the good news is, will probably stil be Brighton's most assured young defender next season. Was part of the collective shambles at the back though..
El Abd: - The last of McGhee's prosaic agricultural team of 2006 - Not a great advert for defending yesterday, normally treads a fine line between aggression and blatant wrestling, but crossed t hat line yesterday. Is probably second choice to cup-tied Mattock for the rest of the season.
Caldo : - Stay on your feet man!!!!
Bridcutt ; Had a good first half... I thought he looked the biz in the first 45. Was not at fault for either og credited to him.
Buckley : - Awful yesterday - Just Awful. A big disappointment, he is generally far better than that. Not surprised to see him subbed at half time.
Navarro : - At least put in a shift against his favourite club, ... was no better or worse t han he usually is though - like the rest, ok up to half time, overrun second half.
Barnes : - Divides opinion at the best of times... those who hate him, say he does nothing - I think he generally is one of the hardest working players at the club - but like Navarro, ok up to half time..... swamped afterwards.
Lua Lua : - Very good first half - Excellent free kick, looked promising - its good to see him start for a change - has been out for ages with injury, but looked back to the old Kaz.
Vokes : Not a lot of service. At fault, sort of, for the goal line clearance that led to the first Bridcutt og... but that may be being a bit harsh. Didnt see a lot of him ....
Subs: Noone ; Big disappointment. Huge. Had 45 minutes and didnt show his "favourite" club anything at all.
Vicente : Flashes just before the 4th goal, but then faded like the rest of the team thereafter.
CMS: Ran around a lot as usual.... with the usual lack of success. Becoming a sortve "Torres" style disappointment for me - all those goals for Peterborough, but perhaps we just dont play to his strengths. He looks a forlorn figure these days

It's man's game, mate, if you can't stand the rough n tumble defenders like El-Abd then go play netball.
You're just bitter about Lambert, as so much of Southampton's game is built around him and you didn't have a clue once he was sent off.
I like the euphemism of rough n tumble defender, and actually it was footie, not netball, Carroll was trying to play yesterday. If you can bear it have a look at Liverpool's second goal yesterday keep your eye on the Carroll El-Abd wrestling match - it's hilarious. We'll never know whether if it hadn't been a goal the ref would have given the most nailed on penalty in history. btw you obviously didn't see the Lambert incident - the Seagulls fans that did see it agree that he had been wrestled to the floor, held down, and then when D'Urso saw Lambert push El-Abd off without seeing any of the preceding action, he sent him off. And a minute before he'd missed another assault in the penalty area on Lambert as bad as the one on Carroll yesterday.
As one your own describes him:
El Abd: - The last of McGhee's prosaic agricultural team of 2006 - Not a great advert for defending yesterday, normally treads a fine line between aggression and blatant wrestling, but crossed t hat line yesterday. Is probably second choice to cup-tied Mattock for the rest of the season.

My thoughts, from what was a very disappointing afternoon. Lets not get it out of perspective though - to say that we could not survive in te Prem on the basis of one thumping is ludicrous. Both QPR and Swansea were thrashed on the opening day this season - neither are in the relegation zone at this point.

To say 'millions' have been wiped off of Dunk's value because of one own goal is just ludicrous. 1 goal = being devalued by millions - get real.
And you clearly don't watch enough Albion games if you have that opinion of El-Abd. Player of the season last year and has been very goof since his comeback from injury.

Also, when it went to a disciplinary (as it was not seen by the ref), El-Abd was willing to testify FOR the Newcastle player. I can't think of his name and can't be arsed to look it up.

Actually, Ive been a season ticket holder since the 90's .... so the "clearly dont watch enough Albion games if you have that opinion" is frankly arrant tosh! Its whats known as an opinion. EL-Abd was prosaic and agricultural in 2006 - frankly I dont think he's all that, and last season at Withdean aside in which he was starting to look fairly cultured before the injury, he's not my favourite player.
Brezovan - you know what? You are correct - I'd forgotten that he didnt start last season as first choice either - my mistake- couldve sworn he was first choice at some stage before Ankergren, but the memory dims sometimes.
The DUnk remark - oh come on - dont be so tetchy! It was a hilarious own goal, seen around the world. The talk was that premiership sides were interested in him earlier in the season - whether that is true or not, who knows... but that was a flippant remark - it was what we were using as gallows humour yesterday after the goal, so I threw it in.
Opinion.... Error ... Light hearted remark.
I'll buy you a pint in the upper west on Saturday.
