Oatway confident Poyet will stay at Albion

Charlie Oatway says Gus Poyet will not be distracted by speculation Charlie Oatway says Gus Poyet will not be distracted by speculation

Charlie Oatway has reiterated Gus Poyet’s commitment to Albion following interest in the manager from relegation-haunted Wolves.

The long-serving first team coach is not surprised Poyet has attracted the attention of a Premier League club.

But Oatway believes the Uruguayan is intent on continuing the process of building the Seagulls into a bigger force in partnership with chairman Tony Bloom.

The Argus revealed yesterday that Poyet had been targeted by Wolves, who have turned their attention to Reading’s Brian McDermott.

Oatway told The Argus: “In my time at Brighton we’ve had some good managers linked with other clubs and they have gone on to so-called bigger and better things, so we are quite used to it, the fans and everyone.

"Nobody is surprised Gus is getting linked with other jobs and that includes us, the chairman and his board of directors and the fans. It’s one of those things that is going to happen. Gus has signed a five-year contract with a bigger picture and a bigger plan with the chairman to build this club through the right avenues and I am sure they will."

Wolves,I think, will struggle to attract Gus or the Reading management team, and will have to employ Bruce (who will be lucky to turn their fortunes around). However he will earn a good 'wedge' for a few games in charge.

BBC are reporting that Wolves would need to pay comp. of 2m to Brighton for Gus and that is 'prohibitive'- apparently McDermot has walked away, as have Curbishly and Bruce. Maybe 2m will become more acceptable in the days to come. A collectors item though for Gus to have no comment.

Is Charlie being groomed as the next Assistant/Managaer should Gus and his mates go to pastureres greener?

He's now involved with team matters, handling the media etc, good for him.

I do feel like it is going to get a bit annoying if every time any job is vacant we have to expect ongoing speculation. It will be unsettling for the players ultimately. Gus is on a long term contract and whilst it is obvious that there are a small number of jobs in the country that he just could not turn down (including Chelsea and Tottenham), other than that, he will stay. I think Gus has even said that, but he does tend to talk a lot and I feel like his openess gets misconstrued. It annoys me a bit that Wolves are even allowed to give chat about him, he's ours!!!

YAWN, YAWN, YAWN!!!

This is so boring. Poyet is not going to Wolves or any other club at this time unless it was a AAA premiership, Championship or European club. No second string premier club is going to pay £2M compensation and Gus will not want to damage his reputation by walking away from a 5 year deal less than 12 months after signing it, at least for any club that is not a AAA club. Maybe in 12 months time if we are not serious contenders next year so enough of these boring stories please Naylor and Co. Focus on the football please!

I am going for a 1-0 win to the Albion tonight.

I agree. What is especially annoying is that Gus seems content NOT to deny interest in managerless clubs OTHER than the ones that would be a no brainer to move too! His comments about the Leeds job spring to mind. Perhaps he is eatablishing his "worth" in the market, but I wish he would be much quieter and get on with the job in hand, rather than potentially unsettle the players and fans. Or is it all "something and nothing", just talk and non news from Naylor and co to fill the pages?!

So why doesn't he say he's not going then? He's either not been asked and is waiting to see if he will be and what he will be offered he has been asked and is considering it. I do think he's unlikely to take it given the goings on around the club and the way they've handled both sacking and trying to replace McCarthy, but he'd be a fool not to find out what he might be offered before he turns it down.

Fair point Mark - it seems to have been left to Oatway to do all the pre match talk. Wonder why.

Probably because Gus is having a "business lunch" in the board room at Molineux today!

If and only If Gus was interviewed for the job,I can imagine the conversation going something like this.We would like you to join us here You are a great Manager and as we will be in the Championship next year you will be familiar with the opposition.Gus would then say but why am I only your 5th choice as being right for the job. Thanks but no Thanks

Gus has been nominated for the npower Football Manager Outstanding Achievement Award for 2012, so interest from other clubs in acquiring his services is unsurprising.
He was quoted in April 2011 as saying, ''It would have to be something very, very, very unique, something very, very special.'', (To tempt him away).
Having made his position clear, he probably doesn't feel the need to respond to speculation linking him with every run-of the-mill vacancy.
I have been surprised and disappointed by the number of posts in recent days, taking the view that if Gus goes, no problem, we'll get someone else.
This type of comment is entirely inapropriate when discussing a manager who is near the beginning of a long contract, is committed to taking the club into the Premier League, and is on schedule by any reasonable standards.
It would be a mistake to take his achievements for granted, or to presuppose that he could be replaced with some simplicity.
He is a very unique and special manager!

Truth is, if Gus wasn't being mentioned in dispatches, it would probably mean he wasn't doing very well at the Albion, in which case many supporters would want him gone anyway. UTA

So Gus has a choice - spend two years in Shirley Drive, Hove or two years in Shirley Road (Dudlay) Wolverhampton.
It's a no brainer really.

I take your point gordongull, but to be fair it has been drilled into us that anything can happen, whether it is regard to players leaving or even the manager.

It is more about the comfort of knowing that TB, the club and it's long term ethos is bigger than Gus.

I must add that Gus has also earnt the right to learn his craft with us and deserves our faith in him.

You make some good points Gordon, but i do not think he has made his position entirely clear at all. Yes, he has said that it would take something special to lure him away. Is Leeds that special with the set up and expectation there? He made some very open comments when that one became available. So i think he is very ambiguous in what he says, to suit himself! He is a "unique" manager, but i certainly do not think he is the "be all and end all" in football managers. If he did go, (which he will do at some stage) there will be adequate replacements out there, given the massively improved status of the club and as importantly, more resources than ever before. Dont get me wrong, I think he has and is doing a great job and I do not want him to go. However, I am confident that if he does leave our gleaming stadium the bus will not be de-railed for long.

Gus ruled himself out of the running for Leeds, (not indefinitely), and I never thought for a moment he would go for the Wolves job.
This is consistent with everything else he has said.
Other managers might well be available, but unless Spurs, Chelsea, or Arsenal take an interest, they will be waiting a long time for a vacancy.

Very insightful comments. I hope if Gus does read the comments on here, that he's shrewd enough to ignore the particular comments that you allude to. Loyalty cuts BOTH ways and is a commodity short enough in football and should be nurtured not dismissed as of little cyonfidence. Adam el Abd is a case in point and he gets more than enough stick when he bleeds Brighton through and through.
