Results boost for Albion

Albion go into tomorrow night's home game against Reading boosted by setbacks today for some of their main play-off rivals.

Cardiff conceded a late equaliser in a 1-1 home draw with Watford, which means the sixth-placed Welshmen are only two points clear of the Seagulls.

Ten-man Blackpool came from behind to draw 1-1 with Barnsley at Bloomfield Road and stay fifth.

Middlesbrough lost to a late goal, 2-1 at Hull, to remain below the seventh-placed Seagulls on goal difference.

Leicester continued their late charge with a 2-1 victory at Ipswich to move within a point of Albion.

Gus Poyet's side will move back up into the play-offs in sixth if they win their game in hand against second-placed Reading.

The good news: results went for us today and our destiny is back in our own hands. The bad news: the likes of Leicester and Hull are back in the playoff chase now, which is becoming more and more intense with each round of fixtures. Now we have to take care of our own business and somehow find a way to get at least three points from our next two fixtures - Reading at home tomorrow and West Ham away on Saturday. It won't be easy and recent form hardly fills me with confidence (two draws and a defeat in the last three). But if we can do that, then we'll still be in with a chance. Hope Gus picks a team with a really positive approach against Reading as the best form of defence against them is attack.

Getting anything out of Reading is a huge ask.

They are physically very strong, extremely well organised, will have every detail of how we play drummed in to them and will be fired up to get the three points to keep them in the auto promo places.

Can't see us being able to cope.

Just got bored and stumbled in here from the Razak chat room - however it does puzzle me that such a talented player should be sent back when we are at such a crucial point in the season. I hope the reason he went has nothing to do with GPs enthusiastic support for Luis Suarez's remarks earlier this season.

I wondered when Mr Carrot would re-emerge under a different guise.
Be prepared for some very bizarre comments.

Talking of bizarre, today's results have shown conclusively that points predictions for this division are a waste of time.

I doubt if that will discourage us though.
My revised estimate is 73 points, (three wins and a draw).

If you really are serious about taking us in to the playoffs and winning games rather than drawing so often then would you please stop playing people out of position and release those shackles, i know its a risk but given we have so few games left and against some top opposition then surely its now or never (for this season anyway) im thinking the following :
Brez in goal, Mattock left back, Reyes right back with Greer and Dunk in the middle, whilst i appreciate Adam has more bite defensively, he is not as good a footballer as Lewis and i think we have missed that a bit. so on to midfield and going for those points with Lualua left, Dicker and Vicente in the middle and Buckley on the right. Cms and vokes up front. bench of Calderon, jfc, Noone, Barnes and young Toby.

Go on Gus, give it a go, you, me, everyone might just like what we see.

I like the line up but I would have Calderon in place of Reyes, and Assulin in place of Dicker. Substitutes asgreed apart from El Abd for Calderon.

We need to take the game to Reading with attacking verve and speed - not our usual packing defence and midfield and building attacks slowly.

What a joke selection at Burnley. Vokes and CMS up front but no attacking width. Why doesn't Gus USE the attacking players he has at his disposal like Blackpool do?

Do not worry about us not coping, as that we certainly will! Reading have all the attributes you mentioned, but there is no 'huge gulf' between us and them in terms of quality. Their defence is a little suspect from what I have seen, so I will be disappointed if Gus does not attack strongly from the start. We must begin with Buckley and Lua Lua to put the pressure on and I would be brave and put Adgestein up front with CMS too and see how that works. I have been very impressed with what I have seen of him and I think he deserves a chance to make an impression. Reading have will have a fairly sizeable following but their fans are more at home in the proverbial 'library' so we will be able to make it count from the stands too. Prediction 2.1 UTA!

Spot on. I have said the same most of the season. When we play with width we play much better. Poor team selection in some cases has cost us quite a few points. Hope we play with our wide men tomorrow otherwise Reading will run all over us.

I have been watching the West Ham game. Absolutely deadful! All WH do is hoof it up to big fellas up front. It's what they have been doing all season. Typical Allardyce...get a load of big bully boys and make an aerial bombrdment. No wonder the locals are upset at the way they play. We should all be thankful that Gus does not want us to play that way. Oh, and before anybody writes the cliche that as long as you win it doesn't matter how you play..it certainly does. If the Albion played like that I wouldn't go.
Also, why do refs rarely get 'Handball' decisions right? The penalty that WH got was never handball. It hit his arm but was not intentional. They should read the rules and apply the spirit of the law, not the letter.

Yep agree on that too. If we do not make the play-offs, it will be entirely due to our performance in front of goal that has shaped our seasons outcome. We are a decent side and if we could sort the front out we would be well and truly in the play offs not on the fringes! Also, why is there the problem up front? Is CMS not good enough or has he been let down by the promise to build the side around him? We also look more potent when Lua Lua and Buckley play together.

Its amazing how some fans still want to the long ball forward. Some teams try and outscore the opposition, others play try not to give anything away and get the goals through patient build up and a bit of cunning in the final 3rd. I think we all know what camp Gus is in and it hasn't done us too badly in the last 2 yrs or so! If we start with two wide players it often leaves us stretched in midfield and more vulnerable - plus we can't get the ball to the wide players. I certainly don't think you can play 2 wide players plus Vicente. If we don't go up it won't be down to Gus's team selection, it will be be because we weren't quite good enough. Hopefully a win tonight will prove that we are good enough.

Managed to acquire some turf which I promptly handed to my Saints mate when we met up shortly afterwards. Good day out.
